Disillusioned football supporters are creating their own lower league teams to bring fun and loyalty back to the people's game. The message is loud and clear to the money men - keep your grubby hands off our game.

'Fans don’t want to be told where and with whom they can stand'

AFC Wimbledon, FC United and now AFC Liverpool. Real football teams. Grass-roots clubs being reborn at the lowest level by real supporters disillusioned with how their football experience has degenerated.

They wanted and needed something else. They were fed up with 11.30am kick-offs, vastly-inflated season-ticket prices and people in charge of their clubs who didn’t have their best interests at heart. They longed for the Exeter City fan experience.

This statement may seem bizarre. To be honest a great deal of the time even Exeter City fans may well wish they weren’t supporters of the Grecians. But I’m about to explain that when you look closer, away from results on the pitch, it’s the Exeter City fan experience that these dejected fans are searching for.

I lived in Exeter in 83 - 85 and learned to love ECFC. After reading the book "The Beautiful Game - Searching for the Soul of Football" (a damning report on the current state of football) I joined The ECFC Supporters Club,,,,and am now a proud supporter and 'owner'. I am hoping to fly over to the Wembly Game and still follow the team year in and year out. I'm kidded by my workmates who follow Premier teams (we have several Brits at work here) but I'll stick by Exeter.....I really feel like I belong and the supporters club has given that to me.
