Why homegrown talent is better for Spurs, West Ham and all the Premier League
Imagine a Premier League where every club started on an equal footing, where 50 per cent of players were born in the country and where there was no foreign ownership. It's just about that way in Spain, so why not in England?

It has always struck me as reassuring that the fans of two of the most cosmopolitan, progressive and successful teams in the world, Barcelona and Real Madrid, demand that some ‘local boys’ appear in their team.
In fact, throughout Spain, regional identity is often expressed through the local football team from local boys' clubs through to the largest clubs in the country.

What happens to a team that is in the Championship, but are relegated into League 1? Are they expected to instantly re-model their team and hope they still get promoted?! In theory, yes the idea will encourage the development of 'home grown' players, but in practise it will throw all club structure and player security out of the window. Do appreciate the idea though...

forget the mileage from clubs, just them being English would be enough. probelm is that any english player who has half a good season and attracts interest has his price put up to an extortionate price, which always makes it easier to opt for the young foreign player. i believe a rule should be put in place by fifa though that says out of the 18 man squad (as it will be soon) half should be of either english or maybe british origin.

To many of our youth players are black and thta is a huge worry for the future of our beloved spurs. Bring through the yids
what sort of a stupid comment is that spursboy? on what you have said i assume that you hate ledley king, although coming through our youth team being black is not accepted by you? you are an idiot!
by Martin The Viking on April 18, 2008
Totally agree..good article! But how we shall get the wheels in motion for that to happen is a challenge.
The problem is English players are not good enough (did they qualify for the euros?)... So if you play 50% english players you are lowering the quality of the premiership, The TV money which pays the bills will be reduced, and attendances have gone up and ticket prices have increased since the foreign players have played here, then the clubs go skint

This will never happen as European Law will not allow the restriction of employment opportunities across the EU. Even Blatter has realised that he cannot contravene EU laws with football rules. And spursboy, that is just blatantly racist! Considering some of the greatest players to play the game have been black, this is a ridiculous statement from a small minded bigot!
by Steve Barrett on April 18, 2008
That might be OK for London or midlands clubs but I doubt Carlisle fans would like it as their alloted area (40miles at the moment) would probably encompass under 100000 people probably not the greatest selection headache but they'd never get promotion

Cheers. What happens now when a team gets relegated now, they get a parachute payment that allows them to release or change players without going into total meltdown, why not something similar. Alternatively do nothing and force clubs, big and small, to look close to home for talent. The EU point is accurate and this would only work if all the clubs agreed and no one broke ranks. I disagree that English players aren't good enough (managers is a different story!) your problem is a lack of depth, you don't have back up for the top players, more players in your league would help. Carlisle, yeah I can see the problem, maybe it needs a bigger brain than mine to create a formula taking in population as well. Lastly Spursboy Fan I reckon you're about as big a Spurs fan as I am, save your comments for the next time you get day release.

Why is it only me who can see that the player Spurs need to sign is Fulham's BUllard, Bags of pace and determination, a sure fire hit with a poven track record
To the author, Engish players are not good enough and the ones that are are overpriced. How much would the England team cost to buy compared to the Croatian team that did qualify for the euros. Rio and Rooney cost more than the entire team... Also for each team to have six players that would be 228 English players... Where the hell are these players and how are they better than the foreigners you name an English player and I''ll name a better foreigner.
The only hope for England and spurs is the Black boys coming through dont get me wrong players like rooney ,gerrard types are welcome. but no more player who r in just in coz their dad suck the scout off.let us compete with france n brazil.spurrrrrrrrs

Im sick of hearing ideas like this. The premiership is a league, not a breeding ground for the england national team. These ideas just come from england fans who cant accept that they're shite. Or secondarily from fans of crap teams who want the playing ground levelled. "Imagine a Premier League where every club started on an equal footing" So what about the teams that built themselves up through years of success? should they sacrifice their talented foreigners to produce a better national team? Absolute pish. Same goes for wage caps and all dat other shite. At the end of the day football, as well as being a sport, is a business. Why punish the successful to allow the shite to catch up

Atthe end of the day he's right football is'ent just a sport it's business now but, what i can say is this,as the seasons go on money wise the bigger teams get bigger and the smaller teams get smaller. The likes rotherham will be a thing of the past while big prem teams have money popping out there ears what you have to see is this, man u would spend £100,000 on a player wage per week while rotherham scrap on half that for all there players and are still goin under. look my point here is this:i hate to say this but football looks a dying sport becuase the little teams are the foudations of football and so because of the money league twoo, one and possibly some of the championship will die out . yes you can all say what you like but for me at only 16 id like to see something done or not only will we lose some great english talent we'll lose the foundations of english football

English players are often over priced, but do recall recently reading a croation lad named modric being priced at over £15mill so what you are saying is hardly accurate and as for English players not being good enough, look at the season David James has had, then look at players like Terry, Gerrard, Rooney, etc that are all world class! And when you say name an englishmen and I will name a better foreigner, what the hell does that prove? you are comparing England with the rest of the entire world!!!
on April 20, 2008 on April 20, 2008
That makes Modric 50% of the price of Lampard or Gerrard. The rest of the worlds players don't all play in England which is the topic of the article.
Lampard never cost £30mill and Gerrard didnt cost a penny which goes to show that concentrating on good young English talent is the way forward, look how Arsenal messed up with Bentley, he looks a real talent now he has been given a proper chance.
But Fabregas cost less than a million, Do you think Bentley is better than Cesc? What would Gerrard or Lampard cost to buy?
Fabregas would probably cost just as much to buy as Gerrard and lampard as he is an established premiership player as well, which is the reason why quality English talent tends to cost more as it is less of a gamble. Bentley if playing for a top club would be up there with the best.

If James, Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, Rooney (Ferdinand, Cole, Owen, Richards) are world class. What other countries team has that many world class players and cannot qualify for the euros. They cannot play together because they don't have the technical skills that the foreign players do. They hoof the ball and play direct like Chelsea to Drogba, Liverpool to Crouch. Man U play better because they have Scholes and Carrick. Barry is the only other England player with any technical ability in the England team.

it is a bloody football league where the fans want to see bags of talent they don't give a shit if it from abroad. The premier league has a worldwide reputation and the only way to keep that is let it be. Keep it how it is. Yids!!
