Five-star question: Are Spurs about to clear out their English contingent?
Rumours are rife that ruthless Juande Ramos could be ready to offload the likes of Paul Robinson, Michael Dawson, Jermaine Jenas, Darren Bent and Tom Huddlestone.

Sting once sang about being an Englishman in New York, but Englishmen could soon be just as alien in north London if rumours are to be believed that Tottenham could sell up to five of their home-reared players in the summer.Neighbours Arsenal are renowned for often fielding sides without any English players, with only Theo Walcott and occasionally Justin Hoyte pushing for places - and now Juande Ramos could be set for a similar approach. Only Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate are apparently safe from what could be a ruthless cull. This leaves the likes of Paul Robinson, Michael Dawson, Jermaine Jenas, Darren Bent and even the resurgent Tom Huddlestone’s futures under threat. The Espanyol duo of keeper Carlos Kameni and defender Daniel Jarque have both been linked with moves to White Hart Lane, with Robinson and Dawson paving the way. Bent could be replaced with David Villa or Diego Milito, and Tiago was a January target which would put centre midfield places under threat. According to reports, only five players in the entire squad have been declared ‘untouchable’ by Ramos - Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov and Alan Hutton joining Woodgate and King on that list. Some changes are understandable. Bent has been a misfiring flop and Robinson is clearly out of favour. The most surprising of these ‘threatened’ players for me is Huddlestone, whose strength and promise is matched by a fantastic range of passing and positional versatility. Losing him would be as big a mistake as letting Jermain Defoe go, judging by Defoe’s Pompey exploits. It certainly shows a ruthless streak in Ramos, a man who once reduced his Sevilla team to 10 men because they weren’t playing with enough ‘intensity’. Despite winning the Carling Cup and turning round a torrid start to the season, he clearly feels there is room for improvement. Obviously crucial for Tottenham’s lofty aspirations next season will be holding on to Dimitar Berbatov, who week by week is increasingly outclassing his teammates, for whom the season seemed to end when they lifted the Carling Cup.An English backbone has been considered important for even the most successful Premiership clubs. John Terry and Frank Lampard at Chelsea, Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard at Liverpool, Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick at Man United. Tottenham have been building a spine like this for years, culminating in this season’s Carling Cup success. With St George’s Day this week, a reminder that this is the English Premier League, is it really time for Spurs to turn their back on their English contingent?

Clear out the Engish players! who started this nasty little rumour? Probably a gooner! If all of these liitle snipets of info were to be beleived we wouldn't have any players left! thats probably what they want. Just leave us alone, we just have to trust Ramos at the end of the day.

You are right that it would be a mistake to let THudd go; you are wrong to label Darren Bent a 'misfiring flop'. He has came into a team knowing it was going to be virtually impossible to break the first choice front two pairing. Then was expected to face a fast disappearing season - even though half the time that was from the bench. He has surely scored enough coming on from the bench to suggest he can STILL score in the Prem., let alone to spare the accusation of 'misfiring'. A lot of Spurs fans didn't really want him, and labelled him as 'a waste of money' and costing a 'vastly inflated price' - are you sure you aren't one of those, those who have almost willed him to fail. I really don't think Ramos is going to go for the 'massive clear-out' some have been predicting. This is, after all, the squad who rose up the league rapidly after his arrival, including thoroughly out-playing ManUre for a large part of the match at WHL, and won the CC. While the form since that vistory has been 'disappointing' it was never going to be crucial, and I doubt he will have decided more on the poor form after than the good form before the CC final. Indeed I read an interview where he said flat there wouldn't be a huge number of comings and goings. Dawson, possible. Robbo, possible - though he may yet decide to stay and play for his place. Jenas - maybe (though on top form he is actually a very very good player - just, infuriatingly, lacks consistency). Most of those to go will be the likes of Stalteri, Gardner, Lee, etc I think he likes O'Hara, and Lennon seems to be close to earning a reprieve, if rumours are to be believed.

Clear out the english players!!!!!??? GOOD!!!!!! They all lack technical ability.... England didnt qualify for the Euro's cause we wasnt good enough... all other countries are bringing up much better players.... Only players i rate in England are Defenders! Probably cause technical ability is not needed as much! Clear out our junkkkkkk and bring in some players who can play football and hold possesion without falling apart as soon as the other team start closing down....

If we sell our english players, and become some kind of retirement home for average foreign Carlos Kickaball's, I will really be dissapointed and angry!! I don't wan't my Spurs to become a Arsenal!! It's something we could be proud on to have a good core of english players! That's actually one of the plusses with Spurs the past few years, that we seem to have an policy of bringing in talented british players, instead of filling our squad with average players from abroad! David Moyes at Everton said something the other day that Everton now had their scouting focus and scouting resources on the isles instead of foreign soil. I think that's the right thing to do for our Spurs aswell! And if we buy foreign, only go for the best! This is what the Man City executive director said, and that's what i think we should go for also if we buy foreign: "What we will look to do in the summer is to further boost the squad, bring in top-quality, internationally recognised players," Taweesuk told The Daily Telegraph. "Superstars would help fill the stadium and help our global branding. Primarily, we must win on the pitch - it can't be a gimmick. "We've had discussions [with Ronaldinho] but we'll see how that pans out. "We've looked at a host of players. Man City having discussions with superstar players used to be unimaginable, but not now. "It won't be a galacticos strategy, but older famous names. We want to build around the team we have." There's a rumour going around that we are after Howson, a 19 year old from Leeds, that's the transferpolicy I like!

If you were to believe the media there will be no one left at Spurs this year. They are all going to be sold or all want to leave. I cannot believe for example anyone would want to get rid of Lennon. He has real pace and can beat a man--a real rarity these days. Similarly with other young players who are talented but need to develop without the continual hyper-criticism that is current. Spurs should give the young players a chance in these last meaningless games of the season. We bring in young talent then let them go without a real chance to grow and mature. Look at Lee Barnard a real talent who is beginning to flourish elsewhere. Kaboul would be the same if we let him go. Same with Tarabat and Boateng. For heavens sake have some patience!!!!
This is what gets on my nerves!!! Proud of our english players???? This has nothing to do with pride! If our players are not good enough which clearly there not, then we need to cut out the crap! Everton have done well this season... But look at there midfield, mainly foreign! Arteta, Pienar, Osman etc... Unless your content with finishing mid table then its time to put pride to one side and buy foreign players! Does anyone actually think Ramos will buy english.... NO CHANCE!!!!! he will bring in technical players from abroad...

Consistency, consistency, consistency that is what Spurs have missed for large chunks of this season. However, no manager will achieve this by clearing out all his players at the end of his first (part) season. Ramos will tweak the squad, bed in his management team, bring some badly needed stability and move forward from there. We all should accept that it is still a long haul to the top-four and it will include a squad with English players.

Tottenham need 2 qualify 4 europe next year, 4 tht we need players of high quality. If ramos thinks the english players we have arent up 2 it then they need 2 be sold. The options r 2 replace them wiv better englishment but tht will be 2 expensive so the only viable option is 2 bring in foreign quality. Its a shame i have always bin proud of Tottenhams english contingent but i wud sacrifice tht 4 regualr Champions league football. In the end only the top 4 can afford top quality english talent nd we aren't top 4

But surely it is spurs who are the "moral gaurdians" of "English football" and reject the constant influx of johnny foriegner, i mean what wil happen when you start signing players who actually look like they know what they are doing? Then maybe you may have a half decent seaosn in the league instead of watching Ramos turn your league form around.....oh........oh dear!

What we need to decide if we want to push on for a top 4 place or not. If not then keep the likes of Thud, Cimbonda,Zokara, Jenas, Tainio, etc.. But if we do and I sincerely hope we do then they are not good enough to be in the starting 11. Ask yourselves this would any of the above get in the top 4 sides now? NO. Jenas does have the ability but needs to challanged for his place and will be a good squad player, Thud may also. But we need to overhaul our midfeild and bring in 2 central midfielders and a left sided midfielder. a goalie, Centre back ( 2 if King aint going to play) and cover for right back
I'm all for buying foreign players..but ONLY if their EXCEPTIONAL!!

I expect no less then 20 new signings in the summer. None of which are going to be English. The only English players left will be Woodgate and King with Bale, Guntar and Hutton making up the remaining Brits. Kameni, Amelia, Ben Haaim, Diaz, Jarque, Dossena, Capel, Tiago, Diarra, Granero, Arshavin, Negredo, Mane, Hierro, Del Piero, Guida lopo, Shudy Laka and ladee bla bla all to arrive before next season. Unless of course you realise that most of the stories from the press is total BS. The only English players that should and probably will be sold are Robbo, Dawson and Gardner.

i think the way forward is to buy accordingly and according to most we need a whole new midfield? i did a greatest ever tottenham team for a magazine called total football, and too be honest the likes of jenas would not make the e-team and the likes of malbranque the f-team, we should keep the likes of o'hara, hudd and adel and as for players to bring in i would be very happy with those we have been linked with i.e, bentley, krancjar, pranjic/capel, modric, granero (part of the berba deal???) ramsey and gattuso i would be very happy with any of those four than what we have now and although controversial i would sell lennyand as for a keeper i would plump with mcgregor although a friend of mine plays for peterborough and claims that joe lewis is the best young keeper he has played against or with.

as well as the players on loan: stalteri, gardner, ghally, chimbonda cerny rocha lee and maybe robinson and tanio will go. The rest will stay, and will be joined by a GK, CB, CM, LM . that will give us cover in every position. If by Jan. transfer window hudd, lennon, kpb, and jenas havent pushed on, they will also be shown the door, to be replaced by; rose, tarrabt, ohara and david hutton. But the 4 newcommers have to be of the highest quality - which means comoli keeping his grubby nose out of it ( we could send him back to the paedophile's lot to muck things up there. onwards'n'upwards

by SPURS4EVER on April 22, 2008
Jenas, Lee, Stalteri, Gardner, Lennon, Taino, Chimbonda, Malbranque, KPB, Bent, Ghally, Cerny, Rocha, Robbo should all go. Keep Zokora, Kaboul, Dawson, Ledders, Asso Ekotto, Bale, Hutton, Keano, Berbs (if we can), Thud, not all as first teamers but also backup for CCup or FACup. We need better quality and a good squad in depth and we dont have that at the moment. Lennon has been found out as he cant cross, Jenas goes missing in some matches, Robbo has had his best and wont be happy as No2. LYP not good enough as is Gardner, Stalteri, KPB, Malbranque (cant score at 6 yards) and Taino. QUALITY is the answer. COYS !!

It was actually Rayo vallecano he was manager of when he reduced his team to ten men not sevilla.

Come lads, don't get excited after all this is on Sportingo. It looks like a spoof or windup when this is the writters first article having joined just this month. Why would he put up an Oxford United badge ? It's obviously a windup by someone from the minor leagues so why take it serious. Regurgitating childish rumour mongers' scribble doesn't deserve a response. Just delete and don't waste electricity.
