Barry Ferguson - the first player to break the ultimate taboo at Rangers
The young midfielder seemed to make himself bigger than the club when he took on the previous Ibrox manager. Sixteen months on he could captain Rangers to the quadruple!

Whether, like me, you love Rangers or you are one of the misguided few who hate them, even their biggest detractors must acknowledge the level of success they’ve enjoyed.
Their 51 league titles is the highest number in the world and, more than anything else, this can be attributed to stability and trust. Since their formation on the banks of the Clyde, by a group of enthusiastic young students, right up to the modern day, Rangers have had only had 12 managers in their entire history,.
Think about that for a second - from 1872 until 2008, only 12 men have guided the club. This incredible success is built on solid foundations. Which is why what Barry Ferguson, the Rangers captain, did a year last January is all the more remarkable.
At few clubs can the adage ‘no man is bigger than the club’ be truer than at Rangers. In the modern era three club captains have been unceremoniously dropped and many a popular player has found himself warming the bench or on the transfer list for daring to cross the club.

Sorry buddy.....I am a Rangers fan through and through, but this article is a pile of pish. Absolute tosh. No player is or ever will be bigger than the club. PLG was sacked because his decision to drop BF was the final straw. It showed that he didn't have a clue about us as a club or the demands of the SPHell. Barry is not some kind of messiah as you make out. And certainly not bigger than the club. He SHOULDN'T have spoken publicly and if was the owner of the club, he would have been out the door along with PLG. I do agree that he would have been a huge loss though.

You know what everybody's entitled to their opinion Rory, but i'm sorry i disagree with you.well anyway i'm not a fan but a supporter who's spent money watchin this Rangers team all season and i'll tell you this for nothing, they would'nt be half the team they are at this present time without him,he is the driving force behind them, and if you want to go back and watch a 4 2 3 1 formation,(where we virtually got humped every time we deployed that system) and gubbed 3-0 after 48 mins in the cup to the pars well that's up to you.If you can't see that you must be watchin highlights on the telly.I know your a bluenose but come on,would you still rather have PLG who cannae even get PSG out o the bottom 3 or Barry,no prizes for guessin who i would have, and one more thing look at the signings that PLG made??? and why does he not buy SEBO for his team???1.8 million of pure crap.PLG will be on the dole at the end o the season are you actually sayin to yoursef a UEFA cup semi-final????

I'm not saying I'd rather have PLG. I've never said that. I also agree that we are half the team without BF in it, especially this season. but he isn't irreplaceable. My whole point is about the way BF acted, and the way he acted so publicly. PLG's tenure was unacceptable, but that isn't the way any player should speak about his club. Never mind our captain. Not the Rangers way.

sorry rory i was weaned on scot symon giving my age away there lol but your talking a lot of poo no harm was done so end of subject byeeeee

I keep hearing about how poor a team Rangers would be without Ferguson. This season he has been very average and in my opinion not even in the top five players who have played for the club. McGregor, Hutton, Weir, Cuellar and Thompson have all been miles ahead of him.

...Barry is a good influence on the field and I agree, he stood up to PLG, it took bottle but he knew all along the fans and team (the Scottish players anyway) would back him the whole way, but let me tell you this....someone is going to steal Barry's shine as he dips further and further to retirement...who's your money on? I know where mines is
Tam Tamson............................. step up Kevin Thomson

That was a well-written piece, inspiring, original, and with interesting observations and conclusions. It sure gave me an added interest for Scottish football.

Thank god somebody agrees ! That article was compeletely and 100% true and anyone who disagrees clearly doesnt know a thing about football. Ferguson week-in week-out gives 110% at Rangers and once a boy my age said when we won the League cup " Barry didnt deserve to lift the trophy " No. He is clearly our best player and after all he does for Glasgow Rangers, this is the respect he gets shown ? He is clearly the best player in Scotland and what bugs me is that when Barry makes a bad pass or anything small everybody seems to be on his back cause they dont realise nobody is perfect, look at players like broadfoot and Cousin who make countless mistakes but Ferguson always gets the biggest rammy ! A dont think anyone feels the same way about Ferguson as i do ! Hes my idol and a legend in the making cause i wouldnt give a toss about meeting the like of Cristiano Ronaldo if i had the chance to meet Barry. I just want to let him know how much i admire him ! Your a legend mate ! And also while were on the topic on Rangers, could i also point out how much i despise all of you Boyd-Bashers ! How do you win games ? Goals. How do you win Tropies ? Winning games. Who will get you goals ? BOYD ! Simple. Where would we have been in the League Cup Final And The CIS Cup Final ? Maybe Smith should consider playing himm ALL the timee for god sake and we would get further ! None of your Kenny Miller nonsence !! Barry Is Bigger Than The Club. Ryan Shields. 13 years old ! :-) 6. 9.
