The Welsh wonder's crown has slipped at Old Trafford, so we take a look at the contenders to take over his mantle as No.1. Martin Petrov has certainly done himself no harm down the road at Eastlands.

Ryan Giggs' absence in the Champions League match at the Nou Camp was representative of the decline of the greatest left-winger to grace the Premier League over the past decade. Unfortunately for the Welsh wonder, his underwhelming season has not gone unnoticed by Sir Alex Ferguson, with Ji-Sung Park the immediate beneficiary against Barcelona.
So we are left wondering, with Giggs' crown as the most-gifted left winger slowly slipping from his grasp, who will steal his title?
Manchester United are hoping Nani will prove a long-term replacement for Giggs down the left touchline. As Arsenal and Fulham can attest, the Portuguese youngster has shown flashes of brilliance this season, contributing four goals, making him the fifth highest scorer for the champions-elect this term.
But Nani's game suffers slightly on the left-hand side due to his tendency to naturally rely on his right foot. He gives opposition full-backs a slight advantage which true left-wingers minimise - as he lacks a certain amount of unpredictability, more often than not he is caught looking to cut inside on his right foot.

Martin Petrov... so offten you see the opposition doubling up on him, and that fear alone helps create space for stephen ireland and micheal johnson and of course elano... his skill and dribble accuracy is enough to scare anyone, and keep in mind that he's 29!!! had he of blessed the premier league earlier, i think he would of definatly gave giggs a run for "the crown"... all this being said... we also have the best rightback in the prem... being Corluka... he is suck an exciting player and he always leaves us applauding him... also the best young up and coming center half in richards!!! any team would take him... and "one" of the best attacking midfielders in my mind Elano... he may of gone rusty after the first 21 games... but for the past 4 he has played back to his exciting best! and also we have the best young up and coming central midfielder in micheal johnson! such a talent this lad, on this basis the only team i can see chalenging with us next year is villa...

As much as it pains me to say it Petrov is a very good player (still not in Nani's class), and with Elano, Richards, Dunne and Hart City are a decent team. Still a long way to go yet though to get to Europe, and you'll never catch up with the pride of Manchester. Forever in our shadow

Ryan Giggs will always be the greatest winger in the premier league and even the world.Hes not only a great player but hes a great role model aswell.He can play in midfield and off the striker or a free role- hes not past it,hes just not a lightning fast winger anymore- but still has more magic than anyone with the ball at his feet! Petrov is a great player! just not as good as giggs!!! Ryan had a uniqne style of dribbling. Legend 4 ever!!! 11

I'm a season ticket holder at City. I do like Petrov in our team n he gives us width on the left(which is a lame excuse i spose) He does need to do more in games he disappears way too much. Plus he's a pussy in the tackle! When he's on his game tho he is brilliant, i.e Newcastle, Boro n Fulham. He is worth playin every game cos of his pace but for someone to say he's the best left winger in the league they haven't watched enough games.

Much as it pains me to say it, as a Blue, Giggs has been a fabulous player; great skill, wonderful attitude and a credit to the game. A great pity Jim Cassell wasn't heading up City's academy when Giggs was kicking a ball there, maybe he'd never have left.

Good article but in my opinion Ashley Young is the top left winger in the premiership. Unbelievable pace, skill, bags of tricks and can finish with either feet. He just shades it for me from Petrov.
