Never mind Rooney and Ronaldo, the Rio grand is what makes Manchester United flow!
Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo may have caught the fans' imagination this season with their electric performances, but the brilliant defending of Rio Ferdinand is equally important if they are to win the biggest prize in Europe.

It’s often said that defenders don’t get the credit they deserve.
With the notable exception of Fabio Cannavaro in 2006, it has been very rare in recent years to see a defender nominated for a Player Of The Year award.
Now we can assume Rio Ferdinand will not win Manchester United’s Player of the Year gong. We all know which Portuguese winger will be picking that up, but the England centre-back deserves a huge mention for his commanding performances this season.
Take the Champions League first leg in Barcelona on Wednesday, for example. Ferdinand was imperious, commanding his defence and making vital tackles. His performance bought back memories of the epic display in Rome when he marshalled the back four superbly and helped United to a clean sheet and ultimately the semi-finals.

You are absolutely right, the young lads have done a great job, but Rio's been the index and prologue to the successful campaign in so far as this season is concerned. I hope they honour him with the England's armband. The guy has been outstanding to say the least!

Hes an outstanding defender no doubt about that but lets not forget the beast that is the Serbinator aka Nemanja Vidic, easily the best defender in the league
