Does Modric's arrival spell the end of Spurs signing Brits?
As the £15.8m Croatian playmaker heads for White Hart Lane, the indications are that Juande Ramos plans to give his squad a more continental look. And that could mean a few home-reared talents being shown the door...

Preparations for next season have already begun in earnest at White Hart Lane, with the Spurs management snatching the highly-rated Luka Modric from under the noses of Newcastle United.
This is a coup for the Lillywhites. The 22-year-old former Dinamo Zagreb playmaker has been the talk of the town ever since he showed up Steve McClaren's England during the Euro 2008 qualification. Modric's stellar performances made him one of the hottest European assets in the market, and Tottenham have moved quickly to secure his services for the next five years in a deal worth a reported ₤15.8 million, hoping to see his value and reputation mushroom even further during this summer's tournament in Austria and Switzerland.
Modric appears to be a classic Spurs player. A ball-playing midfielder with a low-centre of gravity, the Croatian playmaker has the invention and creativity to not only deliver the killer pass, but also find the back of the net with a keen eye for goal.
That said, and stepping back to look at the larger picture, questions can begin to be asked as to whether Modric's signing represents a new era at Tottenham, particularly with regard to their transfer policy. For several years now, Spurs have been famed for attracting the best young British talent to White Hart Lane, often spending sizeable amounts of money to secure their services. But this policy, which underpinned their signings during Martin Jol's reign, now seems to be a thing of the past.

I'm a gig fan of nurturing British Players - but come on Robbie Keane British? Same old, same old - he scores a bagful of goals he's british but he's an over rated irish ace when he takes too many touches - give us a braeak its not like he'd get a game for England.

Judging by the fact that the previous two signings Woodgate and Hutton, both British, I think that Spurs have no problems whatsoever still buying British as long as its quality! So if you want to try having a dig at us for not supporting the nationality our club is based in, then you had better try our North London neighbours who believe English players arent good enough yet havent won anyhting themselves for years!!!!!

We need to sell both Berb, Keane and Bent. Berb is a baby and isn't in every game. Keane couldn't hit the net unless it was from the spot and Bent is a flop we should have kept Defoe. Most of the midfield can't control a ball except for Huddlestone who is still learning the trade. As far as Ramos wre should have waited and bought in big Sam A. Give Robbo a chance now he has a reasonable back line.

British players bought in to the Tottenham side should be better than many from abroad simply because they are used to the climate, the fast pace of the Premiership, the British football scene and traditions and they feel more at home. The problem is we don't always have the selection within home grown talent to choose from and the expertise and I would concede that many foreign players can teach us the skills that they have and to include them in our sides gives us extra experience which is also helpful in the European competitions.

british players r overrated & overpriced, if robbie keane is so good y is there no transfer rumours concerning him going 2 a champions league playing club ? unlike berbatov who is linked 2 everyone i don`t care foreign or british let`s start being a team that has winners & not players that talk the talk but don`t walk the walk let`s get in that top 4 &start playing champ league football & leave arsenal behind crying

ARSENAL AND CHELSEA WON THINGS WITH HARDLY ANY BRITISH PLAYERS SO ID LOVE TO SEE SPURS DO THE SAME, ALTHOUGH GO ONE BETTER THAN THOSE 2 AND WIN A EUROPEAN TROPHY.
Lets look at the two most successfull teams for the past two years then look at some of their players: Lampard, Terry, Wright-Phillips, J.Cole, A.Cole, Ferdinand, Neville, Scoles, Carrick, Rooney, plus ive probably missed a few, so to say that the most successfull teams dont have many English players is a bit wrong dont you think?????
Why should we be loyal to Scottish and Welsh players they have there own leagues and there own parliments.
lets face it the top four teams are full of foreign players even their goalies are foreign and they win all the major trophys. The only player spurs can make a big profit is Berbatov and he is not English, so what I am saying is their are more world class players foreign than British

Where they come from, after all its about winning silverwear isnt it?, the days are long gone when any top flight prem side field any local lads, and the top four have how many locals?, also bearing in mind that Arsenal, Spurs Chelsea and West Ham are situated in the biggest capital city in the world!
Walcott was born within 8 miles of The Arsenal, Chelsea have loads coz they stole them from West Ham. Lampard Cole, A Cole, J Terry there are quite a few..
Spurs started it with Ardiles and Villa now the supporters only want brits.... And where are all these great english youngsters that you have invested in?

Are you crazy?? sell Berba, Keane and Bent? do you relise how many goals we have scored this year? even in a poor season? I think we will sell Berba due to his desire to move away from us, im sure 30m can get us a deacent replacement id like to see 10m on Santa Cruz. Can anyone tell me what sort of player Modric is? i haven't seen him play? I never saw THAT game (thank god)

I agree with RUAIRI KOEGH keane is so over rated he is selfish not a team player and tries the same tricks?? every time on saturday against bolton he could have scored but once again took that extra touch & if he had passed the ball earlier to Hutton whenhe should have done Alan would'nt have got injured I think they should give him a ball & the other 10 players another 1 then he could run around in circles on his own, and as mentioned before he is not BRITISH I am sure if we got David Villa or another player like him to play alongside Berbatov I am worried about the future of Bale as he is having too many ankle injuries for one so young, wish they would make a special boot for him with ankle protection if he stays fit he will be a special player for us. If as expected Berby goes I would like Huuntelaar from Ajax he would score goals whoever he plays for. English players I would love (well I can dream) are Joe Cole & Gerrard COYS

the fact that everyone keeps saying 'theirs more foreign talent than british' well jesus! is it just me that looks at this and thinks well, obviously? britain is not a big country as it is, and seens as 'foreign' talent i sthe rest of the world i think its pretty obvious their is going to be more of them than british, no? same if you looked from a spanish or otalian point of view! its simple.. theirs always going to be foreign talent in leagues! its the way it is, and as far as im concerned you look at british players and im talking you linakers, scholes, giggs, mcoists more recently bales, gerrards, carraghers, ferdinands, rooneys, carricks, terrys, ledley king when hes not so unlucky with injuries, even.. even lampard! are these not some of teh best payers in the world? you cant expect a league ful of top word class british players, its not viable and wont happen! and before i get told im a stupid old man with my opinions im a 18year old welsh lad sat in lectures bored.. just thought id put my view across!

England maybe small in stature, but population wise its pretty big, Wales, Scotland Ulster and Eire have produced world class players in the past, now population wise thats a miracle by your reckoning. England are suffering from a generation of kids, that lack drive and ambition other than to act the 'geezer', get slaughtered on a weekend, and blame anyone but themselves for their lack of achievment..and thats only the girls
by alex watts on May 27, 2008
Noodles wat are you on about u dumbass, if keane is so selfish and overrated why has he been our captain most of this season. Now, Modric may be quality enough not to need to go for all foreign places, also there are some players who are british and will be staying like Bale, Woodgate, Keane, Hutton and Huddlestone
