Why I won't be going on about Aidy Hoofroyd's dreadful, dire, despicable Watford
This Hornets fan and Sportingo writer was tempted to write about the team he supports this week, but he has just about managed to avoid the temptation.

As a Watford fan I could easily have written this article today about the embarrassing, abysmal, incompetent, clueless, passionless, depressing and devastating performance we put up against already-relegated Scunthorpe in our 1-0 home defeat on Saturday.
In fact, I could have written a 500-word article just using adjectives to describe the pathetic, lifeless lack of effort and ability displayed by a group of overpaid underperformers who should be ashamed to wear the yellow shirt.
I’m not going to do that, however, because that would be self-indulgent and not very constructive in relation to trying to help the team produce one performance of anything less than excruciating poorness in the final game away at Blackpool next Saturday.
The fact is that we could still stay in the play-offs if we lose at Blackpool. We’ll probably stay there if we get a point and we’ll definitely be in them if we were to win. Obviously, with one win in 12 games, the last possibility is something of a long shot, but we could realistically get a point - if Blackpool play incredibly badly that is.

I don't remember Watford fans complaining about the style of football when they were winning. Boothroyd always made it perfectly clear he didn't mind being boring and predictable and employing extreme gamesmanship as long as he got results. No point complaining about the long ball traditions at Watford just because you're going through a bad patch.

Watford have the manager it's suporters deserve. And the chairman and the president. At least Derby's record low will not be under pressure next season.

As a 40 year WFC fan I KNOW there is something fundamentally wrong at the moment. A team that can win regularly in the first part of the season, even with the loss of a couple of key players, don't become a bunch of useless no hopers overnight unless ther is something fundamentally wrong. What is it? Probably the biggest single issue is the 'retirement' of Keith Burkinshaw - a steadying hand who, as his record suggests, would want to play football. There comes a time in every managers job when they have reached the end of the road in a situation - when they move on they do well again. That time may have come. No, not being hasty. If the team are winning but playing unattractively we can live with that. If they aren't getting the results but are attractive to watch we can live with that. If all the players are 'fired up' and give 110% we can live with that. But nought out of three is hard to take. Let's not beat around the bush if it wasn't for the first third of teh season we wold be fighting with Southampton to avaoid the drop - that's how poor we have become.

AB has come under a considerable amount of abuse. However. Football is basically a very simple game, we all played it at school and we didn't need coaching to defend or score goals then. During any of the recent games any single player could have taken it upon themselves to have a real crack at goal. So why didn't they? Is it ALL down to AB?

The way I see it is this: football fans aren't the most objective bunch at the best of times and at the moment a lot of Watford fans have broken hearts. A lot of people are paying the price for spending all season thinking of trips to the Emirates etc next season and now it's not going to happen (whether we somehow end up in the playoffs or not) people are angry and lashing out. Of course, the fact some morons in the home crowd have booing all season, even when we were winning, has a part to play but they will never accept that. Aidy has made a mess of this season. Of that there's no doubt. But he's entitled to based on his track record. And who minds another season in the Championship? I don't. The 'sack Aidy' brigade need to do their sums because that solution would almost certainly leave us with 'promotion or bust' in 08/09. Is that what people want? People underestimate just how difficult it is to change a squad once you submit the list to the FL on August 31st. It's nigh on impossible these days. Things are set in stone and barring a couple of transfer to act as sticking plasters in January it's impossible to do anything until the following summer. Aidy needs to clear out an awful lot of overrated crap in this squad. He should only be given to spend what he can raise through sales. But it's worth a crack. Lets get the new stand built with the money and have something to show for our season in the Premiership.

Nice list of adjectives and I understand the sentiments exactly. It is not clear to me exactly where the blame lies either but it would appear that the players aren't doing it for the manager anymore. I don't want to see AB go just because we don't get promoted but we seemed for a little while to be playing some football (blink and you missed it in Jan/Feb). What then happened? I'd still rather go up and come down again than have another year in the championship but the latter is hardly a disaster when you look at what's happened to the team we played in the play-off final 2 years ago (Leeds) or our "local rivals" and their troubles.

With a half decent home record, Watford would already be promoted. Why haven't they got a half decent home record? Because the players don't feel comfortable playing in front of the Vicarage Road crowd and who can blame them! Watford were running away with the league without being at their best, but it wasn't good enough for the idiots at The Vic. No. They had to boo and heckle and hound the captain out of the club. Watford fans don't deserve a successful team. FACT.
