The players Arsenal and Liverpool need to become REAL contenders
With Manchester United and Chelsea scooping the major prizes this season, it's clear that Arsene Wenger and Rafa Benitez need some quality reinforcements to take them to the very pinnacle. But who should they buy and who should they get rid of? Orion Assante investigates...

It's that time of the season again to examine "what next?" for the clubs that came so close this time round. In the mix for assessment will be perennial runners-up in the Premier League's Big Four, namely Arsenal and Liverpool. With the expectation that Manchester United and Chelsea will be the destination of choice for Europe’s finest - and with both clubs having the necessary endless ammunition in terms of money to get the prizes - it seems both Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing for the best-of-the-rest. Cynics will argue that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s stubbornness will prevent him from strengthening his squad with the experience they desperately need. But the likelihood that both Aleksandr Hleb and Mathieu Flamini will leave for greener pastures, coupled with a change of managing director implying a change on mindset at the very top level, may suggest otherwise. There will be space in the Arsenal starting 11 come next season and the board may demand Arsene fill them with players who can actually deliver instead of players who merely promise (but in vain) to deliver. So whom will both Liverpool’s Rafa Benitez and Wenger hope to land?Between the posts, both clubs need fresh blood. Neither Arsenal’s Manuel Almunia nor Liverpool’s Pepe Reina are sufficiently good enough to stand alongside their respective clubs’ goalkeeping legends. Liverpool may bide their time for the return of Scott Carson, but Arsenal (post Jens Lehmann) should do better than Lukasz Fabianski. Maybe it’s time Arsene reconsiders Robert Green. It’s no secret that Rafa will need to dismantle his entire back four and replace them. Arsene, on the other hand, should look for a replacement for either William Gallas or Kolo Toure – both of whom are very able defenders but have proven incapable of playing together. In a perfect world, Jamie Carragher would be swapped with William Gallas, with Wayne Bridge and Rafinha brought in to supplement Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel. That would solve both clubs’ problems – except cynics would argue Arsene would never hire someone who is "middle-aged" and English. In midfield, Arsenal desperately need cover for Flamini - and Gilberto surely is not it. In the one area that let his team down badly this term because of over-exposure and fatigue, Arsene should have learnt that he needs a lot more depth to sustain a title challenge over the course of a season. Allowing Lassana Diarra to leave may have been a mistake but now not pursuing Diarra - Mahamadou Diarra, that is – would be an even bigger one. The difference between a good holding midfield player like Mahamadou compared with a hardworking one like Flamini is that whereas the latter gives more ‘oomph’ and ‘buzz’ to a midfield, the former actually is more effective when it comes to establishing solidity and confidence to the team as a whole. Watching Mahamadou Diarra play may be boring in the extreme because he plays with utmost efficiency and does only the very simple things. But he does them so well that is on the verge of winning his sixth consecutive league title (four with Lyon, one confirmed and one surely to come with Real Madrid). No Big Four player can boast a sequence like that.Alternatives include Gareth Barry, whom Aston Villa will have much trouble holding on to. The England star would be perfect for the Arsenal midfield if only because he is left-footed, and Arsenal desperately need someone with his class. But alas, Barry is ‘middle-aged’ and English, which puts him out of periscope range of Wenger. This will surely signal Rafa to recruit him to supplement an under-whelming Liverpool midfield. This is the same midfield that should (finally) see the departure of Harry Kewell and John Arne Riise. Besides which, it is in the interest of Fabio Capello to see Barry and Steven Gerrard play together as an alternative for Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick. In addition, Liverpool will need to finally settle who plays on the right. Jermaine Pennant and Yossi Benayoun are not starters and may be disposed of in the summer. This means a place for Ryan Babel and perhaps David Bentley. Arsenal should also consider their options on the wing. With Abou Diaby not up to scratch and Tomas Rosicky scheduled to spend some part of next season on the treatment table, Arsene should look to back-up Emmanuel Eboue and Theo Walcott. In the same vein as Villa not being able to hold on to Barry, I would love to see Gabby Agbonlahor on one wing and Theo on the other for both club and country. On the striking front, it was obvious to see that Arsenal’s lack of strikers cost them the season. With Eduardo a long-term injury victim and Robin van Persie likely to spend some time on the treatment table again next season, Arsene needs someone other than the unreliable Nicklas Bendtner and the over-relied-on Emmanuel Adebayor to supplement the team’s attacks. With Manchester United targeting just about every able-bodied striker in the summer, there will be slim pickings for both Arsene and Rafa, the latter also needing to supplement Fernando Torres in attack. Benitez clearly has no faith in Peter Crouch and I would have suggested Arsene pick up the lanky striker - but hell would freeze over before he signs a possible fifth Englishman in the summer.David Villa has expressed an interest in joining Arsenal but more likely he will be picked up by Benitez and score against the Gunners in crucial games just like every ex-Arsenal target who has joined the Reds has done. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will be another likely target but he plays in too similar a vein to Torres, and Rafa wouldn’t compromise the confidence of his main goal-threat.To add a side note, in the wake of Barcelona’s disintegration this season and the likely departure of Frank Rijkaard leading to an exodus of players, both Wenger and Benitez should cast a keen eye over whom they may be able to persuade to join their respective clubs. Sure, half of Europe will be circling for the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Samuel Eto’o, Leo Messi, Bojan Krkic and, of course, Ronaldinho. But I’m sure some of them will want the challenge – and the media attention – of the English game.

Ideally Liverpool need to buy players to cover weaknesses especially out wide and the need for a quality 2nd and 3rd striker Lahm and Bentley would be handy along with Dos Santos and Agbonlahor get rid of riise kewell voronin Crouch Pennant and Benayoun and Guthrie to pay for some of this.

i cant believe i wasted 5 mins of my time reading this crap
Garbage, do you know anything about football?
I cannot believe what I just read. I didn't think an opinion could be more off the mark with Reina needing to go but I was wrong when I read the crap about Agger and Skrtel. Is the most clean sheets in the Prem two years in a row not good enough for you?? Do you even watch Liverpool games. Agger and Skrtel are quite possible two of the finest young central defenders in the world and I couldn't be happier to see them owned by Liverpool. For 2 £6-7m players, we have made our money and then some. I would slap a pricetag on them of at least £12-15m a piece without question. They are simply awesome defenders. The weaknesses are our fullbacks, not central defense. It's laughable to think otherwise.
"It's no secret Rafa will have to mantle his entire back four and replace them". Is this the same back four and goalkeeper who have kept the most clean sheets in the Premiership? Are you actually advocating Liverpool get rid of Carragher. Seriously, have you ever seen a football game in your life or do you just spend the whole time in some alternate cyber-world?
Do you actually know anything about these teams? It's a rhetorical question don't answer.

I would buy these players and then play the team as follows: Barry, Bentley and Abidal. The team would then be: GK: Reina, RB: Finnan, CB: Carragher, CB: Skrtel, LB: Abidal. RDM: Mascherano, LDM: Barry, RM: Bentley, CAM: Gerrard, LM: Babel. ST: Torres.
Riise, Carson (Aston Villa), Alonso (Barca/ Juve), Pennant , Voronin (Don't care just get out of my club), Kewell (Don't care), Itandje (Reading), Benayoun (Blackburn)....... Crouch could also go to Aston Villa but I really hope not. I also hope Carson and Pennant don't leave but I think it is iminent.
He's class! Awesome young player and one for the future. You wouldn't want to get rid of him. He'll be the next Stevie G and you see so many of these young talents never reach their full potential and if he goes to a small club he'll never reach his full potential. He's gotta stay!

super article but I don't agree with some of the points , only Brad Friedel can Petre Cech can match Reina in the premiership this season but you may be right for Almuninia he has not been too great for Arsenal but I am sure he can do the job..Attack is not a problem for Arsenal the problem is Ade can not do the job allow 30 goals a season is not bad but then he can be better in a 4-4-2 , I also it will be stupidity if liverpool allows Pennant and Carson should it will be a bad Idea..any soccer lover who will like to interact with other fans and dicuss any soccer related issues should check out Soccer fan base dot com it is free to join.

This writer is very generous and kind. His first opinnion is that Almunia and Reina are not good enough. So I didn't need to read the rest of the article. SOmebody tell me, are there any more ignorant opinions? Who chooses the writers in this web place?

Arsenal should keep Gallas. Until the Birmingham match nobody had a bad word to say about him. Bendtner needs time and he obviously has talent. Barry would be a great signing, unlike Diarra who would be too simple and boring for Arsenal. Also, Barry is a clear leader, just what we need. Strikers aren't a problem. Just wait until van Persie and Eduardo get fully fit and start banging 'em in.

This man wamnts the whole Arsenanal Team to be dismantled. Did he ever play soccer at school or university? If he played, I am surprised he is makning such critical comments gainst some Arsenal players

Even though i hate to admit this, the author is absolutely right, and we need to recognize this. If you look at man utd's and chelsea's line up and squad, they are simply miles ahead of Arsenals and Liverpools. Think about it.. Which of Arsenals players would walk into Chelsea or Man utds line up? Arsenal: Fabregas (Sorry, but the onlt true world class player you have. And even he would have trouble facing the likes of Scholes, Carrick, Hargreaves and Anderson at United, and Ballack, Essien, Lampard at chelsea). Gallas would be a back-up to Rio and Vida at best and would have no chance with Terry and Carvalho. Adebayor would start sometimes with Rooney, but because of the way United play, still be number 3 to tevez. At chelsea he would be 2nd or 3rd behind Drogba and possibly Anelka. Your Sagna is okay, and he might actually be the only player to hold a start in both sides (only because of the weak right-back spot at both clubs). Thats all for Arsenal. Liverpool: Reina would hold a spot at United, but fail to at Chelsea because of the amazing Petr Cech. Carragher, Agger, Skrtel would be back-ups at both clubs in Centre defence. Javier Mashrano would hold a regular at Chelsea (Makelele is getting old, and Mikel is just poor.) and he would start sometimes at United, because they don't always need a player like him, plus they have Hargreaves. Gerrard would walk right into both teams, no question about that, he's world class. And Torres would hold a spot at united, but because of the way chelsea play, he would have a hard time, though still be 2nd after Drogba. This is the mere truth, and these players are just too few. If we look at United players who would walk into liverpool and Arsenal it counts: Evra, Rio, Vida, Ronaldo, Hargreaves, Anderson, Carrick, Scholes, Rooney, Tevez and even Saha at his best. Chelsea: Cech, Terry, Carvalho, Ashley cole, Bridge at liverpool, Essien, Lampard, Ballack, SWP, J. Cole, Drogba, Anelka, Shevchenko, Kalou? .. This is too many.

Diaby can replace Flamini and be up to scratch. He's been wasted far too long on the left and is comfortable infield. Carragher would be a pointless signing as he is aging and lacks the kind of skill Wenger looks for anyway.
by James on May 06, 2008
the only reason Arsene never signs Englishmen is because all the ones good enough to play for a top 4 team are either already at a top four team or they're ridiculously overpriced. Why pay 15 mil fort players like Barry when you can pick up players like Fabregas. Flamini and Diaby for peanuts?
by Eric on May 06, 2008
this was a very ignorant post. hell will freeze over before jamie carragher is traded from liverpool. also, torres doesn't need a strike partner. that's not the formation liverpool plays. they play with 2 winges. very ignorant post.

What a crap of an article and a waste of time.in my opinion this person dont know a football to a tennis ball, why make stupid comparisions, arsenal dont need anybody, only a couple of weeks ago no one mentioned a lack of strikers or weak defenders, and why the media are havindg a go at gallas, maybe he was wrong shoning his emotions like that at b'mgham, but he is only human, being skipper has nothing to do with his feelings.now that milan have flams,go for their courcouf,he is a very good player.
This person doesnt know his football, easy as that.hope one day he 'll be utd manager, they be playing in the sahara in no time, what a stupid piece of crap
