Are West Brom and Stoke equipped to tackle Arsenal and Manchester United?
Derby County have set a new record for the worst-ever Premier League points total. Is losing every week really better than winning games in the Championship?

So, it's official at last and what we have all suspected has been born out by the stats irrespective of what happens on the last day of the season - Derby are the worst team to have graced the Premier League with their presence.
With just one win all season, you'd have thought their supporters would be hanging their heads in shame - yet, Pride Park has remained amazingly upbeat.Perhaps there comes a point where results just don't matter any more. You know you're going to get beaten, so you may as well just enjoy yourself anyway. And, if you're going to have an appalling season you may as well do it against the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool!'Perhaps there comes a point where results just don't matter any more'Playing in the Premier League remains the aim of every club outside of it, even if most of those promoted know that they are likely to find it a struggle. West Brom and Stoke will be hoping to acquit themselves with dignity next season, but once the elation of promotion has quietened down they will know that they will be facing an uphill battle. The fact that neither of them managed to pull away from the rest of pack this season suggests that they are some way short of possessing squads capable of really making an impact in the higher division, and their chances are going to depend largely on who they can both afford and attract to sign for them this summer. But it's a double edged sword - Premier League players expect Premier League wages.Do you gamble and spend big and hope that you survive, or do you try to be more prudent and place your trust in cheaper options? There is no easy answer, and with Premier League teams spending more than ever survival for promoted teams gets harder.
The bookmakers will no doubt be making them favourites for the drop, but their supporters won't care - next season Stoke and West Brom will be playing in the biggest league in the world and have earned the right to stand alongside some of the biggest names in world football, and what supporter wouldn't wish that their club could change places with them?
And who knows what will happen - every team starts the season on zero points, so for a few weeks the supporters of all the teams involved can dream a little!

Why mention Arsenal, why should stoke fear a team that hasnt won anything for years?
by dee bee on May 05, 2008
That is what the Prem. is all about and WBA have proved they can do it. I've just read an article that says by August 08 at least 41 clubs would have played in the Prem, only 7 have never dropped out, so it works out about 30 clubs have survived more than one season and WBA are as big as any of them. So yes I think WBA will be there in May 2010, they'll be as strong as Blackburn, Middlesboro, West Ham etc. Stoke I don't know but I wish any Midlands team luck. DeeBee

are west brom/stoke equipped to deal with arsenal & United? I dunno but the readings, fulham, bolton, and all the other "established" prem teams will hardly strike terror in either club... derby play and played a different style of football...one which west brom used to get out of the championship the previous occasions... but the quality of player and style of play now adopted should i hope bring enough results to see us safe next year...but that is the joy and more often the misery of football that all the talk & speculation is just that at the end of the day...It'll be on the pitch where it will count and nowhere else!!! well done baggies ...sorry the wolves didn't make the playoffs...we could have done with a handy 6 points next season....

west brom and stoke will be relegated before crimbo and i ain kidding either. it would not surprise me either if stoke never get 10 points all season. the gap between prem and championship is bigger now than its ever been so both these 2 teams will be next seasons laughin stocks.
by David Matley on May 05, 2008
No I think Man U will be the laughingstock when they loose the title next week and the Champions League in a couple of weeks. Derby looked rubbish in the championship.West Brom and Stoke are better teams.
by mrs ballbag on May 05, 2008
we will do the double. west brom and stoke are rubbish, there style of fotball is shit and they will be relegated. it must be hard to take but be realistic because your making your self look silly.
by lisa myers on May 06, 2008
haha i like how they say 'arsenal, manchester united, and liverpool' ubt no mention of chelsea. united for the double!

That's a pathetic statement Miss. You sound like a typical United fan who doesn't know what is going on in the world. Have you seen the Baggies and Stoke play? There's every chance the Baggies ( that's West brom for folk who don't know much about football ) will hold their own next season and the Potters ( Stoke City ) will give a fighting display, unlike Derby.

Coventry?

If more teams learnt to play like Tony Mowbray's WBA team, English football as a whole would be much better off as it would be far more conducive for the talent that's out there to match those on the continent and Latin America. Stoke on the other hand (like Derby and Bolton have), represent what people see wrong in the English game as in being crude and direct. Not all promoted teams will be as bad as Derby have been, or Sunderland two years ago (and even they, if you look closely enough, were not quite as Derby despite their 15 points). Sheffield United and Crystal Palace were both very unlucky to go down, and if they had stayed up they would have been able to establish themselves. Even Watford, though patently not good enough, gave it more of a go than Derby did and also enjoyed a good cup run (whereas Derby were hopelessly outclassed at home by Preston!). WBA are a well-run club, with decent resources and have accumulated a very capable group of players. Strengthen wisely and they will be a sound Premiership player for years to come.

The gulf is ever bigger - so why when they played each other this season did the championship teams keep coming out on top! Yes look at the fa cup, lots of championship sides in the latter stages, no Man U in the semis though I noticed. Perhaps its just you though not all Man U, have you ever actually been to Manchester, let alone watched any championship games so you might have the slightest clue what you are talking about? As for Man U's time at the top, that is coming to an end for the moneybags league, add to Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool the likes of Man City and QPR who are also quite capable of outspending Man U and others like Villa, West Ham and Spurs who will give that level of spending a good go and you will not be having it all your way much longer.
how can anyone say that west brom dont play good football. they have won the championship and were unlucky not to beat portsmouth in the FA cup semi finals.
by Rob Mathewson on May 07, 2008
If that Sepp Blatter gets his way with the only 6 foreigners in the starting line up rule the prem would be not so boring as Keegan put it. Where would all the Man U, Chelsea's and Arsenal's be then... Without a squad!!! No wonder our national team is crap. Up the Potters!!!!
by hillary ballbag on May 07, 2008
wow you won the championship, ooh we're trembling, and a few teams beat prem clubs in the fa cup because the prem clubs played second stringers. i've a season ticket for old trafford and i watch preston with my son as he is a pne fan, so yeah i have watched enough championship football thanks. as for other teams being able to out spend utd......so what? we have the best manager in britain who can rely on his vast experience to get the best out of players without having to spend big all the time. enjoy your season being beaten every weekend and then go back to where your club belongs!
by Jim Davis on May 07, 2008
If Newcastle was not so rubbish under big Sam, Derby would have ended with a big ZERO in the win column. (not to mention only 7 points)
by Johno . on May 08, 2008
Half of these man utd fans ay gota clue what theym on about, west brom play one of the best attacking styles of football in england at the moment, stoke will be able to hold there own in the premier aswell as they have decent enuf players to get the results they needed, same with west brom, all the man utd fans given it the big un,
by Mark J on May 08, 2008
Of course we can't hold our own against the big 4 (even thought Utd got beat by Coventry this season :-D and we got a draw there last time we were up). No one in Europe can compete with the big 4 as the champs league demonstrates. However, that's irrelevant as there will be 15 other clubs in the division and none of them look very scary. Albion will be just fine and Ronaldo etal won't enjoy playing against Stoke! Few bruises there I reckon!! lol
