Barry would be barmy to swap Villa and England for the odd game at Liverpool
The idol of Villa Park is being wooed by Rafa Benitez, but a £12m move to Anfield could be a fast track to obscurity.

Gareth Barry is no doubt and excellent player, who deserves to be performing in Europe for a big club such as Liverpool or Manchester United. But would it be wise for the Aston Villa star to move to a team where competiton for places is high and games may be few and far between?
Is playing for a really big club worth the upheaval for Barry. Is the player really motivated by European glory or would he prefer to stay with his club and play consistently, be a crowd favourite for ever, a club legend and still earn his place in the England line-up?
Only the player himself can answer all these questions, but one thing is for sure, the Aston Villa midfielder is in demand and he should think carefully before he chooses his next career move.
At 27, Barry is no spring chicken. But he has made headlines this week as a potential £12million transfer target of Liverpool. Barry is Villa's longest serving player and is coming to the stage in his career where either he makes a move to a different club or he spends the rest of his career at Villa Park where he has been for a staggering 11 years.

barry is playing for a big club. just not a champions league club...yet.
by gaga on May 06, 2008
Villa can keep barry, he is not a player i would spend such a big amount on. Liverpool need skilled pacey wingers and a top class striker at least.

anyone in there right mind would swop villa for l,pool.how many top players want to go there? none . the top four will allways have the best players. and the choice. villa at best are a top 5/6/7 side even m/oneil can,t make water to wine. so villa fans stop kidding yourselves you have never been in l,pool,s class...
your not exactly firing on all cylinders ur self really in fact Liverpool i believe are gonna be the most likely team to drop from the "Big" 4 u got a dodgy manager who i bet is one of those people that when he is going out he changes his mind every time he looks in the mirror and decides he s gonna wear something else hes a tool. then look at whats happening at board level which personally i think is hilarious and makes u a laughing stock of the prem

who's this guy???
I seem to recall Liverpool fans honestly believing they had a chance of winning the league this season! Who's kidding themselves their?? What's this top 4 people refer to anyway?? Top 3 I think is more accurate, Liverpool have achieved nothing this season and I can't see that changing next season. If Barry leaves he's a fool, he's got everything he could hope for right where he is!

Barry should take a leaf out of Mon book, when L'pool came calling he said no and had and still has a good reason why, within two years L'Pool will become hell pool, the directors are heading into very very dodgy waters and inside knowledge dictates the decision that will be made. MMW

Liverpool have won nothing for the last two years and that will continue. They are a club on the way down. Villa are on the way up. If Barry wants to go, let him. But only for the right cash sum. O'Neill will use the money to procure better replacement. Not Pennant nor any of Rafas other failures.

Club on the way down, eh? Oh well I suppose 2 european cup finals and another semi this year isn't that great. Liverpool are getting closer and closer each year and with a few decent signings this summer we'll push utd and chelsea all the way next season. Oh and our 71,000 seater stadium has just been approved, so hadly a club on the way down. Barry should be flattered a club like Liverpool are interested in him, he'd be a fool to turn the offer down. It's about time he moved to a big club and not be a big fish in a small pond. At this stage in his career he'll want and need to play champions football now, so leaving Villa is his only option.

Liverpool dont win league titles anymore. End of.
by Rafa . on May 06, 2008
Well I suppose Barry will just have to make do with a couple of Champions league winners medals instead, what a bitch...

Boring..... Overated club Liverpool.... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
by Benni W on May 06, 2008
The arrogance of Liverpool fan's never ceases to amaze me. Who wouldnt move to Liverpool? A player with sense. Unless you're world class (like Torres) a move to Liverpool might bring you a couple of medals, but how can it really be fun for a player to be rotated constantly (regardless of form) and constantly playing second fiddle? I cant comprehend why any player would leave a club where they are idolised to gamble their reputation for the chance at more medals. Just remember that if players were measured purely on success, Maradona wouldnt hold a candle to Pele, and players like Cruyff and Puskas wouldnt be considered some of the world's best ever. That said, somehow I get the impression he will leave, as much as it pains me. I think he craves the chance to team up with Stevie G ona regular basis, and play at the highest level. Just a shame that he's not a couple years younger - he'd have nothing to consider in that case, because at 27, by the time Villa are regular Champions League contenders, he'll be in decline, unfortunately.

Boring? Come on now, if you're going to spout shit then please actually watch Liverpool play first. We are talked about as a boring side in the press and dickheads like yourself jump on the bandwagon. Who gives a shit about reality and fact? Liverpool are the top scorers in England more than Utd and Arsenal, but hey who gives a shit? We're boring! Quite like the rotation of torres...another media myth. Anyway! The over-rated comment just sealed the fact you're an idiot. Most successful club in British history and 3rd most decorated in Europe. Anywho, if you say we're overrated then we must be. :)

i think u will find that man utd are the top scorers with arsenal and then us the mighty villa liverpool are on the slide slowly but surely take for example last couple of times u managed to out play chelsea and beat them in champs league but now this season u get played of the park against them yet we seemed to do well against them you spend all this money on players yet the only thing that has happened is uv become shittier yes u are boring to watch nearly everytime i have watched u this season i think bloody hell when is simpsons on sky one on coz im falling asleep here let barry go to u and let him find out wot life in scouse land is like but only for a fee which is suitable to us not u or barry because as much as a legend he is for us we still have young who is our main attacking midfielder

LFC in decline. R.I.P. Barry should hang around for a year at Villa and sure if it doesnt work out that angle for a move to the arse or even chelski, but Liverpool-what a waste
by rafa b on May 07, 2008
More ridiculous comments... First of all, LIVERPOOL ARE THE HIGHEST SCORING ENGLISH TEAM IN ALL COMPETITIONS. I thought that was pretty obviously but clearly not. I didn't realise Villa fans were so bitter..stop having a go at Liverpool and blame yourselves for not being a big enough club to keep the likes of Barry :S What a waste? Wow, I suppose being the most consistent team in the European cup for the last 4 years is a bad thing. Fucking hell.
by Mr L pool on May 07, 2008
Okay! To end all the arguments Barry's mind is already made up. The very secound he got a whiff of Liverpool's interest you could tell he has his heart set on the switch. Think about it realistically for a minute big players at BIG CLUBS don't make decisions so lightly, be prepared Villa fans for the crocodile tears in a press conference coming very soon.....
by Ragish on May 07, 2008
Those Villa fans make me laugh. They call others arrogant and then they arrogantly say that liverpool are on the way down and that villa will be a top 4. They will then say that they will be the next England and european champions! Who is Boring? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
by Villa Moose on May 07, 2008
Let us remind our red friends of the terrible truth - THIS IS NOT THE SEVENTIES ANYMORE!! You are not the be all and end all club anymore! You have a good side, nothing more! You may do OK next season, you might even lose to Chelski in the semis of the Champ League again, but don't get too snotty nosed. Villa and many others are still coming to get you despite Barry's eventual decision.

Im actually an Arsenal fan, who would love a player like Barry, but it would not happen. He could come and replace Flamini and be captain for us. At arsenal he would be loved and play every match, and be a player the fans would love. At liverpool he would play every second match, and just fade like Sidwell or Parker when at Chelsea. He should stay at Villa, the fans love him, they have potential and are improving every year, they a decent history and are the pride of the midlands. Why does he want to compte with Alonso, Mascherano, Lukas, and a few more that im guessing Rafa will buy as he buys 2 players for every pos every year.
