Why would Gareth Barry want to leave Aston Villa for Liverpool?
The rumours have been swirling around Villa's captain in recent weeks, with the man himself doing nothing to dispel them. But should he walk out on the club who so have so much adulation for him?

Liverpool have a nasty habit of poaching idolised club captains from sides with ambitions of breaking into a domestic top four, and it seems that Gareth Barry is next on their hit list.
With Martin O’Neill clearly furious that the Reds’ bid was made public, Barry’s future is looking more uncertain than ever. He has not distanced himself from these rumours, sparking fear amongst Villa fans that his tenure as skipper might be coming to an end. But should he be tempted to Merseyside?
At Atletico Madrid, Fernando Torres had it all. The captain’s armband at only 19, a guaranteed place in the side and legions of adoring fans that worshipped the ground he walked on. Why, then, did he turn his back on his boyhood club to join a side in a foreign league with no guarantee of success?
According to the man himself, the final straw was a lack of ambition, exemplified when fans wanted Atletico to lose to Barcelona just so Real Madrid wouldn’t win the title. That, alongside missing out on UEFA Cup football, prompted Torres to sign for Liverpool in the summer of 2007.
With Barry the situation appears to be similar, if not identical. The fans love him, as exemplified by the swarms of banners adorning Villa Park begging him to stay. UEFA Cup football could end up in Merseyside rather than Birmingham next year. Yet Martin O’Neill’s ambition is something that cannot be questioned. He is extremely unwilling to let any of his players leave, least of all the captain he envisages building the team around.
However, what could spell the end for Barry’s Villa career could well be the lure of Champions League football, something that cannot be offered at Villa Park next season. Should they fail to qualify for Europe this year, a concrete offer seems inevitable.
But should Barry walk out on the Villans as Torres did at Atletico? Ultimately, the split between loyalty and desire to further his career could decide it. At 27, the time is ripe for a big-money move. He is fast approaching his peak and will now have to decide where to spend the best years of his footballing life.
Money should not come into it, with Villa likely to come close to whatever Liverpool will offer him. If he does decide to move on, it will be purely for footballing reasons.
And with an almost annual push for the Champions League title under Benitez, the draw of glamour European nights at Anfield could prove too strong to resist.

"Liverpool have a nasty habit of poaching idolised club captains from sides with ambitions of breaking into a domestic top four, and it seems that Gareth Barry is next on their hit list." . What? Who?

Barry will sign for Liverpool. He's a quality player too long out of the limelight playing at Villa with no European football and no trophies. Villa will never have the prestige of Liverpool or Man U so any player with ambition and belief in his ability to play at a bigger club cannot turn down such an opportunity.

I was referencing Fernando Torres of Atletico Madrid, who was captain and club idol when bought by Liverpool.

"Liverpool have a nasty habit of poaching idolised club captains from sides with ambitions of breaking into a domestic top four"... and you named ONE person... Torres. LOL... that hardly makes it a habit. Sorry but that is bad (or maybe even sensationalistic) journalism pal. And yes the other posters are quite correct - Liverpool can offer Barry a chance to play for higher stakes than Aston Villa can. It's that simple.

I think this board alone shows why Barry should think twice about joining a club with dissilusioned fans, with no Torres or Bambie on ice Gerrard bith Villa and Everton would probably be above Everton in the league

beacuse Liverpool are one of the greatest and well supported clubs in europe and villa make up the numbers in the premiership
good job we have torres an gerrard in our team then isnt it! thats such a nothin thing to say, if u never had young an barry this year you could of gone down! how does that sit with you? thought so! mug

Who else on the nasty habit list? Kuyt, for one. Torres, another. And... uh... Lucas? He was Brazil under-21 captain, and Grêmio's, I guess. Now I know there's someone else... Zenden? I don't know if he was club captain over at Boro, but perhaps... I'm really trying to help your point here, Jonathan, give us a hand maybe?
If I was Benitez I would take Barry, Young & Abonglahor!

Correct me if I'm wrong Gareth Barry has been at Aston Villa for 10 long years and they have never qualified for the Champions League NEVER, I think they qualified for the Uefa Cup once and where beaten by some Croatian side I seem to remember. So there's a clue despite being overlooked constantly over the last decade by whatever fool has the England job, Barry has stayed loyal but now he wants Champions League football, you can't blame him if Villa can't do it in 10 years hat makes you think they'll do it in the next 5 years? O yes Martin O'Neill that sainted man who has achieved WHAT? He took a Leicester side into the premiship and managed them into 3 top 10 finishes and won 2 league cups. He then went to Celtic and won 3 leagues, numerous cups and got to a UEFA Cup final and has improved Villa. However whilst I don't argue with O'Neill's record at Leicester, his record at Celtic has to be seen in the light of a pish poor league with rangers (or the huns) detoriating badly. Also look at O'Neill's record hows that when things got tight (twice in 5 years) his sides failed to finish first. His mangerial record is placed up there as some sort of tactial genius, it simple isn't. At Celtic he failed to make it out the group stages of the Champions League unlike Gordon Strchan who's not had the money O'Neill initally had. So if you're 27 and a CL team approches you after a decade of disapointment why wouldn't you go? Finally in response to your "Money should not come into it, with Villa likely to come close to whatever Liverpool will offer him" why is it that Liverpool are apparently going to duble his wages?
Cheers C B, Kuyt was club captain but Lucas was only Brazil under 20s skipper. Bolo Zenden was fan's player of the year but not captain. Kenny Dalglish was Celtic captain when liverpool bought him (ironically 'king kenny' argued my point). can anyone think of any others?
http://www.expressandstar.com/2008/04/23/wages-plan-to -halt-barry-exit/ Villa are offering between 60-70k a week to keep hold of him, not as much but close to what liverpool are offering. I stand by my opinion

If he goes to Arsenal, Chelsea or Man U, I would say fair cop. These sides are united on the pitch as well as off it. Plus THEY are the most likely to win trophies. Liverpool as a top 4 club are for the taking next year - a total mess in the boardroom and a manager that can't get his head round Premiership football. Going to Liverpool will be little more than a side step. If MON can cement his ambition by getting a couple of big talents quickly, our boy might be sensible to re-consider. If one of the proper big teams come knocking though, MON will have to get at least 6 big names!

I think Barry will go because of the lure of the Champions League and his good mate Steven Gerrard. I don't think money is an issue. Whether it is the right move, we will have to wait and see. Villa are unquestionably improving, but realistically may be a couple of seasons away from challenging for a CL place. What Villa do have in their favour is that they are a very happy and well run club behind the scenes. There appears to be a lot of unrest behind the scenes at Anfield. Also GB is a regular in the Villa (and England) side. Would he be under Rafa's rotational policy, if indeed Rafa is still there next season.

73 points this season and Benitez can't get his head around the Premier League? Stop talking sh*te. It's Everton who overachieved than us being poor.

Villa want to go places, so it is not as clear cut as people think. Villa are a big club that has been asleep for virtually 2 decades, mainly due to Doug Ellis running the club like a corner shop. But now the club is owned by a billionaire and managed by Martin O'Neill. Big money has been spent on Young, Davies, Reo-Coker, and the manager says he will be spending very big money in the transfer market this summer. Villa have gone from 16th to 6th in 2 seasons, and might still finish 5th, which is 1 place behind Liverpool. Yes there is champions league, and yes Liverpool are a fantastic club.... But we're not talking about Barcelona v Barnet here, Barry's decision is difficult. From a neutral point of view, i hope he stays. Villa look most likely to me to gatecrash the top 4, and all real football fans want the prem to be more competetive.
Don't know why everyones talking about a top 4.....I thinkl it's pretty obvious the Premiership is dominated by 3 teams! I reckon Liverpool fans might do well to stop kidding themselves, at the start of the season I seem to remember a lot of disillusioned scousers (not that that's where the majority of their fans come from) talking about winning the league! Jog on!
