On June 21, 1986, in the Jalisco Stadium, Guadalajara, Mexico, in front of 65 000 fans, the recently-crowned kings of European football came face to face with the pioneers of the beautiful game.
France versus Brazil - the one tie of the quarter-finals that ticked every box on the wish list of every romantic football fan. Only the World Cup can throw these two sides together in a truly meaningful match. Both sides were the footballing pinnacle of their respective continents.
France were led by midfield genius Michel Platini and Brazil had Socrates and Junior strutting around with Careca up front. Jean Tigana and Manuel Amoros were the other main men in a truly gifted French side.
The heat in Mexico that day was 45 degrees centigrade and the whole world was watching. Both sides had suffered heartache in Spain four years earlier when Brazil went out to eventual winners Italy, and France fell to the Germans in a brutal match at the semi-final stage - that game marred, of course, by Harald Schumacher's shocking assault of Patrick Battiston.

This was the match that really got me into football in a big way. I was just 9 years old, and remember watching it alone and cheering the French on - my loathing of Brazil has never abated, and I was delighted when they lost that one.
