Liverpool are clearly keen to sign the talented midfielder – offering £10 Million; an amount that many Villa fans, and also Villa boss Martin O’Neill, believe is nowhere near what the 27-year-old is worth.
The key to this tug-of-war, some some pundits believe, is trophies. Aston Villa are currently chasing Everton for fifth place and a coveted UEFA berth. Liverpool, as part of the esteemed Big Four are a team with, some might say, more guaranteed success. But as captain and certain starter for the Villa team, others would state that Barry may just be another acquisition, and may not be assured a spot in an already crowded Reds collection of midfielders.
Of course, it could also be reasoned that the Lions are a team on the rise, while the majesty of Liverpool is on the slide. The basic verity is that if the Villans are to continue their rise against the top English teams, Barry must remain the constant in the equation. He is the most consistent player in the side, captain and a crucial aspect of Martin O’Neill’s plans. His performances in the midfield of Villa has seen him become an England regular and Fabio Capello has started him in his first two games as boss.
His fellow players wish him to stay, with defender Zat Knight, striker John Carew, and keeper Scott Carson (ironically on loan from Liverpool) knowing that they need their captain to remain onboard. He is the pulse of the team, and there is no doubt that the Lions are a team on the rise and it is crucial for their augmentation that Barry continues his march towards 400 games for the club.
His efforts, though, continue to capture the attention of the glamour clubs of the league, with Chelsea also interested in Barry’s signature. Soothsayers state that perhaps poaching the star midfielder will put the necessary halt on Villa’s rise. The symbol of the club would be a huge loss, but with the club on the verge of qualifying for Europe, Barry himself would want to be part of that success. Adding to the solitary UEFA championship that they won in 1982 is something every Villa supporter desires.
Villa owner Randy Lerner is keen for Barry to stay, and has had talks with O’Neill to ensure that every attempt is made to keep the star at the club. He is keen to improve the squad, after much work has been done to establish them as contenders. By the same token, it is of no great surprise that Barry is being chased by the big clubs.

Gareth is a good player..but not a great 1 .. £10 million is a very good price..but not a penney more
by dai thomas on May 09, 2008
no it is not if rafa the fat tosser thinks lanky is worth 15m the bazza is worth atleast double i know it sounds stupid but to us that is how much he is worth him leaving would be the same as if ronaldo left man utd her is our star player we have some great potential players but only two proven stars barry and laursen
by Noah on May 09, 2008
If Peter Crouch is worth 15 million how does that make Gareth Barry only 10 million?
that rafa he aint got a clue how to manage a team he aint got a idea how to play his best team and he is a limey greasy snake trying to damage our chances of getting into europe coz he is scared that next season we will be better than them if we make a handfull of good buys and keep our stars then we will turn our potential into a real force
to be honest id tell liverpool to p*** off and if he wants to move then we decide the club he goes to

What are you talking about darren kaysis. Barry is our captain and a England starter, is a great passer of the ball, with a great left foot(not that common) and can play left back, center back, left side midfield and centeral midfield. so if hargreves was 20mill and crouch is 15mill how can Barry bo worth only 10mill? Is it because he is not at a "TOP 4 CLUB"? And if things keep going the way they are for villa and liverpool soon villa will be finishing higher in the table than liverpool.

how can donkey Rafa claim Crouch, who had only 12 months left on his contract, is worth £15m and then offer £10m for Gareth Barry. Barry is without question one of the top 10 midfielders in the Premier League and will be going nowhere for less than £20m

Villa are a million miles away from Liverpool and will be for a long time. I can't see that side troubling liverpool anytime soon, highlighted by the fact your best player and campaign wants to jump ship and move to a bigger club. Oh and by the way, £15 million for crouch is very reasonable. Liverpool paid £8 million for him when no-one else looked twice at him. Since then he's gone on to be a regular for england and score a decent amout of goals for Liverpool. If darren bent is worth £17 million, crouch is certianly worthy of a £15 milliom price tag.

FFS when will people stop talkin about this supposed TOP 4? there isnt a top 4, there never has been. theres a top 3 + liverpool + the rest. liverpool are NOT anywhere near man utd, arsenal and chelsea in terms of either ability or consistency. barry would improve liverpool only on consistency, ie NOT enough to actually create a top 4.
Liverpool are 11 points behind Utd, if we would have turned a few of them stupid home draw against wigan etc into wins, then we'd be sitting pretty at the top of the table actually. When we take Barry and add a couple of others, we'll be right up there next season. ;)
Liverpool are nowhere need ManUtd even though they've had one of their best ever seasons int he premier league. Over the last 10 years Liverpool's average total has been 63 points . A win tomorrow and Villa are within a point of that. Liverpool don't have the consistency to be able to expect another good season next year. Martin O'Neill is improving Villa at a rate of 10 points a season, we'll overtake Liverpool next season.
When did Barry say he wants to leave? It is the fake Liverpool fans that make up rubbish like that. I feel sorry for real Liverpool fans having to put up with fakes. Liverpool are moving futher and further away from Man u and Chelsea while Villa are Making up ground and I KNOW WE HAD MORE TO MAKE UP. Liverpool have to get over this big 4 thing to challange for the league again.
It's getting to a point where everyone in football has gone mad, we hear this same shit from Everton every other season. One good year then a bad one, only they think they'll win the league next year after their decent season. It must be getting bad if Villa think they'll break top 4, you'll be lucky to finish in the top 8 next season. Sounding alot like them Geordie clowns actually. And btw, its comon knowledge on Liverpool that Barry is desperate come join, all the local journalists with good connections are saying its a done deal. I hear a brummie one on talksport saing the same. So please stfu and accept you arent big enough for the like sof Barry. How can you expect to overtake Liverpool when your best players wants to leave because you arent good enough? He's been a good servant to Villa, so let him get some decent Champions League football under his belt at a big club. He desrves it. Can't blame the lad for wanting away, who'd want to live around that horrible brummie accent? ;)

Love the comments from Liverpool fans. You just have to face reality - Villa aren't a "big four" team, but neither is Liverpool. Rafa has made himself look like a complete tosser with his latest comments and Barry staying at Villa doesn't seem as out of the question anymore. Liverpool have turned into a joke of a club with the upstairs wrangling and they're not doing themselves any favours with this latest disaster. Liverpool 11 points off Man Utd? Villa are 14 points off Liverpool. So by that logic, why would Barry want to join Liverpool!
by ste g on May 09, 2008
because Liverpool were a few results away from being in with a shout of winning the title, Liverpool could have eassily picked up an extra 11 points if we hadn't thrown so many away to the likes of wigan. Oh and theres a small matter of 2 finals and another semi final of the european cup in 4 years, barry could stay there til he was 50 and never match that at villa. So basically that was a ridiculous comment, if he has any ambition then he'll leave villa. :s latest disaster? what bidding for a player? :S the ownership doesn't come into it, that wouldn't stop Barry wanting to come,...

Liverpool are not a top 4 team, whine, whine, whine.... Crouch not worth £15M, whine, whine, whine.... Looks like the wrong club from Brum are getting relegated this year...
by hahaha hahah on May 09, 2008
Liverpool aren't top 4? Thats strange, I'm sure Rafa has taken us to third twice already ahead of arsenal....and fourth again this year.... FACE IT VILLA ARE A SMALL INSIGNIFICANT CLUB, THATS WHY YOUR CAPTAIN IS DYINH TO GET AWAY
by Ken T on May 09, 2008
My gosh how ignorant can the villians be? Villians to overtake Liverpool? When? How? Who in Villa can? When I read O'Neill slamming Rafa about the claims, I can only read a quilty man trying to cover his a*se cos he has just told one of his player to get lost. He will be looking like a big fool to have admit of the telephone conversation. Why Barry will move to Liverpool? Simple, playing with the better players and in Europe.
all you can offer is that some local journalist think it's a done deal and you don't like the Brummie accent, which is a bit rich coming from a whiney Scouser. Villa and Liverpool have exactly the same Premier League honours i.e. one runner-up spot. Whilst your owners squabble about how to get as much money out of the club, ours will be investing a wee bit of his billions in putting the Villa back where they belong.

What is it with Villa fans? cant even recognise that in the last 3 seasons - this is the first time Arsenal have gone above us. Oh yeah, Liverpool have challenged and won Euro cup,got semis this year, final last year. Pre Benitez won UEFA cup, countless FA cups. Where's Villa? And now you have had a good season compared to Liverpool's pretty poor season and u think you can compete and be above us. You need to wake up and smell the coffee. You have a great manager but we will end up above Chelsea and Man utd before you rise above Liverpool. Its call pedigree - or in your case pedigree chum.
