Can O'Neill's message of Aston Villa optimism get through to Gareth Barry?
As Liverpool continue to court the Villa skipper, the question is whether Barry would actually have a better chance of success at Anfield.

Last week, news broke from Villa Park that Martin O'Neill had publicly dismissed Patrik Berger from the club for remarks the Czech star made encouraging Gareth Barry to join Liverpool.
Long gone are the days when Berger was a force around the Premier League. It's been over a decade since he rose to prominence at Euro '96. So it was no huge shock to see the ailing Berger on his bike. But it was the spin which O'Neill attached to his departure from Aston Villa which was the interesting part.
The boss is desperately trying to convince the public that Villa are now serious contenders in the Premier League. They are no longer a selling club, but rather a club on the rise with lofty aspirations. Playing for Villa is no longer to be seen as a stop-gap until a so-called big club comes beckoning. Playing for Villa is an honour.
The need to assert this message has been intensified by Liverpool's courtship of Villa captain Gareth Barry. As the fulcrum of the Midlands side, O'Neill will be loathe to see Barry walk out the door to one of their closest rivals (in terms of league positioning). But does the Irishman really have a point, or are his efforts to hold onto his prized asset merely just a delusion of an over-inflated evaluation of his team?
In the context of the Barry sale in particular, O'Neill may have an argument. Of the four clubs in the Big Four, domestically at least, Liverpool pull up the rear. On the field there remains huge doubts whether Liverpool have the squad capable of winning the title, with in-favour players like Dirk Kuyt, Jermaine Pennant, Alvaro Arbeloa and Steve Finnan all susceptible at the highest level of competition.
Off the field, however, is where Liverpool's problems truly lie. With the season drawing to its conclusion, the debacle in the Reds' management hierarchy will have to be resolved. Any of the four protagonists – Tom Hicks, George Gillett, Rick Parry and Rafa Benitez – could walk out of the door at any moment, and such instability should be a cause for concern to Barry.
The contrast with Villa is stark. Behind the scenes Randy Lerner is constantly cited as the best example of how foreign investment can work successfully. Silent and supportive, Lerner has formed a very productive working relationship with his manager, as the team has benefited as a result.
Villa are ambitious and they have a good reason to be. They have a strong squad comprised of seasoned internationals with experience of football at the highest level (Martin Laursen, Wilfred Bouma, Stilian Petrov, John Carew and of course Barry himself) mixed with youthful exuberance (Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Nigel Reo-Coker).
After a re-jig in the summer, cutting away some of the dead wood and replacing it with new talent, Villa will have their best chance in years to launch an assault on the big boys in the division. Well, that’s O'Neill's plan anyway. And should Barry choose to stay, such ambitions may have some real credibility.

Great article, spot on about the Villa. Randy Lerner appears to be a very classy owner, who wants to win things with Villa and will do it his own way. Martin O'Neill is a winner, pure and simple. I would like to see them make a stand and say to Gareth Barry in no uncertain terms, we will let you go if you don't want to be part of what we are doing but under no circumstances will we sell you to Liverpool. It will be a blow to Villa if they lose Barry, losing him to Liverpool who they hope to catch next season or the one after would be a double blow.

How much $$$ you spent ??? ask lerner to back up his talk instead of signing lousy players like davies and knight, ask barry whether he rather plays with agger, skertyl, carra or the scrubs in villa. Barry is the first to go, follow by young and abundantwhore, you lot scored tons against shite sites and are suddenly hope to catch top 4, stop dreaming

Yes, the bin dippers have spent tons more cash than us but where's it got you? Still miles away from Big Three aren't ya? Villa are a club on the way up with prudent manager who's not going pay over-inflated wages for lazy over paid Spaniards who would struggle to hold down places at Barca or Real. How many of your players would make it in a real class team like Man Utd? Bin dippers now a laughing stock of the prem. O'Neil's posturing is simply inflating Barry's price so that we'll get 24m from Chelski

how many players of yours can make it into our mighty reds squad, other than barry and young, your team won't even make it into our 30 men squad, get over it, just sell and shut up, like my little bitch

Ok,ok. Your squad's bigger than ours. But my dad's bigger than yours. With the money spent on players you've got to be disappointed that you seem to be getting further and further away from the mighty Mancs. We did very well this season with the smallest squad in the Prem. Think back to your glory days when you used about 13 or 14 players in the 70s/early 80s You had two great managers in Shankley and Paisley who knew what they were doing. You're just shitting it because teams like Everton and Villa are closing the gap on Liverpool. Both the Toffees and Villa have brilliant managers who can get the best out of bargain players and so when restrictions on foreign imports come into place we'll have a big three of Villa, Everton and Man Utd! ...In that order!!! ....And maybe the Baggies as well!!!!!!

Liverpool have always been a club I've had enormous respect for - even Benitez - until the last couple of weeks. Two seasons ago Gerrard was on the verge of a big money move to Chelski, and I agreed with all Liverpool fans who decreed that Gerrard should show loyalty to the club that made him a great player. Selling out to Chelsea would put big question marks over the integrity of the Premiership. MY views haven't changed! I'm learning that even fans of the 'great' Liverpool FC are a fickle bunch and their manager lacks integrity and honesty. My respect is fast diminishing!

villa is shite, sell young, sell barry, sell abundantwhore (only notable players in a pathetic squad), and get on with your life as a mid table team

If, and its got to be a big if now, Barry signs for Liverpool, Benitez wont know where to play him. It would be like giving an eight inch cock extension to Mr Bean.

Gareth Barry Is An Amasin Player We Could Do With Him,He Can Play AnyWhere In Midfield And He's A Quality Players 2 Have When The Likes Of Gerrard. Alonso, Babel Is Injured. We Should Put A Bid In For Barry At 14 Mil And See What Happens From There. Then We Also Shoud Make A Bid For Benzema At 16 Mil. Thats My Opinion Any Way

Support your local team. Simple as that. Jst because you watched a game in 2005 gives you a right to slag of the founding members of the world's first football league, with the fourth biggest trophy cabinet in the English league, and one of only four English teams to win the European Cup/Champions League. Liverpool are a top team; so what? We have the smallest squad in the league assembled at a fraction of the cost of theirs AND we outscored them by miles. In fact Villa are the joint highest scoring away team in the league. You glory hunting fools who have nothing to do with Liverpool apart from the fact that you watched 2005/fancied Michael Owen/or your dad passed through Anfield in 1986 or whatever haven't got a clue. Liverpool and Villa are both in cities with strong Irish connections. There has always been a great deal of respect between the fans because of that and also the fact that we share many of the same club values, our teams have been starved of success and we have to put up with idiotic wannabe local rivals who wear blue. If any of the people writing here think that you are Villa or Liverpool fans you might actually want to find out what that means first. Yes Liverpool are a better football team with a great manager and great supporters, but Villa are for the first time in years actually moving towards fulfilling our similar potential. If any of these supposed Liverpool fans are saying that good players should sign for the best teams then Ronaldinho would never have joined a floundering Barcelona, none Abrmovich's first Chelsea signings would have joined a team that hadn't won anything since 2000 and the Atletico players that came in last year such as Simao and Aguirre wouldn't have signed . Sometimes it's good for your career to be ambitious and not go the safe route; look at what happened to Beckham when he joined the biggest team in Spain, they didn't win anything for four years. He should have joined Barcelona and led that team back to the top of the Spanish league. Same with Michael Owen; he left Liverpool when they were beginning the Rafalution and won nothing in Spain while his team mates went on to lift the Champions League. I'm not saying that Villa will win anything in the next couple of years, but joining Liverpool just because at the moment they are much better off is shortsighted. If Barry truly has faith in his abilities, he should stay at Villa and lead them to the success that we are now starting to look capable of achieving.
