Top goes the Weasel! Free cheers as Gary Johnson and Bristol City head for the Premier League
A good old-fashioned set-piece routine inspired Robins to a shock first-leg play-off win at Crystal Palace. But City's after-match celebrations had Palace boss Neil Warnock fuming - and you can be sure the tie is far from over.

Bristol City grabbed a crucial win at Crystal Palace and are now just two games away from reaching the promised land of the Premier League. They scored two stunning goals and whilst David Noble will take all the plaudits for his stunning 30-yard winning strike in injury-time, Louis Carey’s free-kick was brilliant in its own right.
Following the game, City manager Gary Johnson shed more light on the free-kick routine. “We've got names for our set-pieces and we call that one the weasel. Michael McIndoe just shouted 'Weasel' and everyone got into their positions. But I can't see it working again on Tuesday, I think Neil (Warnock) will have it worked out.”
It is fitting that the hard work on the training ground should pay off in such a crucial game. Nowadays it is rare to see teams attempt to put together a move from such a position as there are so many dead-ball specialists about. Perhaps this is due to the success and hype around David Beckham, but the truth is that many games are won from dead-ball positions - and for those of us who watch a lot of football it is great to be surprised and enlightened by a new aspect of the game.
(Looking for parallels with Carey’s free kick, there is Ernie Hunt’s famous goal for Coventry in the '70s, Tomas Brolin’s strike for Sweden at USA '94, and Javier Zanetti’s sneaky goal against England in France '98. But these set-piece moves are rare and kudos to the Robins for showing just how valuable they can be.)
