Tottenham and Newcastle beware, £16m doesn't buy you much
Some teams spend loads of money without success and others lose players due to a lack of funds even though they are more successful. Is it only to do with market forces?

The end of the Premier League season is here, and what an ending. Soon too will be the final of the Champions League, after which player trading will begin. Rumour mills will start working overtime and everyone expects the best for their respective teams.
Chelsea will spend a squillion pounds on a few players in their prime. Sir Alex Ferguson, who deserves congratulations on winning the title again, will bolster his impressive squad. Rafa Benitez will add more souls to the ever-ending rotation and Arsene Wenger will undoubtedly pluck some unknown youngster from the Australian Second Division or equivalent and try turn him into a star.
With the increased prize money and rich owners, money for the transfer dealings for top teams is secure. The interesting part comes with teams lower in the table. The teams that struggle every year to qualify for Europe like Tottenham and Newcastle seem to be able to spend outrageous amounts on players and yet under-perform every year.
Some transfer spending is logical but as Everton prove, it’s not the basis for progress. Everton don’t seem to be able to flex nearly the same kind of muscle, even Arsenal who play regularly play in the Champions League don’t seem to be able to match this kind of spending. Are these clubs banking on future success to validate the initial outlay? Leeds did that and we all know how that turned out.

Only Tottenham will buy, not for Newcastle anymore. If you check the closed news around Newcastle, this summer we will change Owner, Chairman and every insider staff. Pay for success is not our plan anymore. Just Tottenham did so leave us alone.

Saying Tottenham struggle to qualify for europe each year is a bit harsh, fair enough they were poor in the league this year but everyone seems to forget that they qualified with ease the 2 years Previous, only missing out on champions league by 2 or so points one season. Im a United fan and even i see their the closest to breaking the top 4 right now, so why shouldnt they spend and increase their chances? poor article!

Being a TOON supporter, I know we've spent way too much money of players who have flopped big time, ie Boumsong, Luque, etc but then again, the 2 time we have spent £16m, its been on Englands top 2 strikers, so saying that we waste that sort of money on crap players, isn't quite true, unlike the Spurts did on Bent!!
by Rob D on May 13, 2008
To add to John's defence of Spurs, the assertion that Spurs have spent nearly as much as Chelsea is just plain wrong. We've spent a lot, but not nearly anything approaching Abramovich's Chelsea since he took over. Furthermore, our wage structure is far more rigid, stricter i think than Arsenal's even. The fact that we can spend as much as we do is testament to the huge fanbase we have, despite limited success in recent years. That is something which makes me very proud.

Is this article a joke? Spurs have qualified for Uefa 3 times in a row, I wouldn't see that as struggling. Yes the league performance was disappointing this season and yes they wasted 16m on a player we didn't need last season. But now the Manager is having a say in the transfers it's totally different. Ramos obviously see's Modric as an vital player to have in our squad next season and 16m for a player nowadays is hardly breaking the bank - especially for a player of Modric's calibre. As for the toon, yes they've spent big in the past as well, but not to the extent this article makes out.

16 million buys half the Arsenal team that finished 37 points above Newcastle or Spurs....
by Paul Innocent on May 13, 2008
You are on the wind up mate. As stated above we have qualified for the Uefa three times on the spin, so hardly struggling... I trust Ramos's judgement with transfers & signing Modric so early on without anything being leaked to the media was a fantastic bit of business.
If Spurs keep improving at the rate they are, they should be relegated next year. 60 points last year, 47 points this year, 34 points next year Bye bye! A bit like the seventies all over again!

good one son. i dont even think they spent £16 million on bent, it was prolly closer to £50million dont u reckon? i think spurs being ambitious going for modric is idiotic, why dont they realise that if they want to be a sucessful club challenging for the CL they shouldnt sign anyone or if they have to, just sign championship players?? i reckon spurs have really under performed the past 3 seasons qualifying for the uefa. i also think that villa, pompey and everton in recent seasons have shown signs of relegation candidates coming between 10th and 5th! Keep on writing these great articles PLEASE

£16m for Arsenal Team. Which Arsenal team?
by jay yiddo on May 13, 2008

16 million does not buy half the Arsenal team you mug. Our transfer budget would have been lower than Arsenal's for the last 5 years, with Bent being the only blip. Its probably also worth mentioning that Spurs are the 11th richest club in the world and the richest not to be playing champions league football or winning any major trophies for 9 years. With that kind of foundation, imagine what a 50,000 seater stadium and Champions League football in the future could make?

Has Darren Bent flopped? We have a new manager who has made purchases on defenders after a string of injuries. It was widely agreed that there was a weakness in defence and he played safe and decided to buy in . Who could blame him? It seems to have worked. We got off to a bad start to the season which may have been due to the defence but could also be due to the loss of michael carrick in midfield .He has purchased Modric to remedy this. Berbatov wasnt that expensive. The top four have spent a lot more money than Spurs.Man City bought the whole team!

If the author of this dire scribble is over 8 years old it is confirmation of the disastrous state of the UK education system. Saying that spurs have spent anywhere near the amount that Chelsea have defies even economic illiteracy. My six year old understands finance better than this imbecile. Abramovic has put in in excess of £1/2 billion of his own money to finance players so perhaps wizard Evans can explain how spurs have spent somewhere near that without any infusion from ENIC or raising debt. Their financial statements are in the puiblic domain. Perhaps Evan can respond by giving us his analysis of the finances. Teacher can help if the accounts have too many long words. Then perhaps the erudite Evan can give us his assessment of the strengths and weeknesses of Modric as he seems to be more aware than the major clubs that wanted to sign Modric. Lastly perhaps some background on Evan which demonstrates who he supports and the attributes that make him such a knowledgable journalist wannabe. The internet has a lot to answer for when it provides a platform to people like Evan who seem to have an ego way beyond his IQ. Reckon his UK shoe size is higher than his IQ!!!!

but spurs havent spent hardly anything compared to chelski. We also finshed 5th the last 3 seasons with ease, and one of these we should of finished 4th, if it wasnt for the spammers and a dodgy lasangue. Also you cant judge Modric when he hasnt even played yet, and he did make our English midfield a laughing stock when we played crotia. As for you spammer/arsenal lot you dont know who Ramos is gonna buy in yet so dont speak to soon as he will be thrown right back at you soon.

Right I'm going to concentrate on just one paragraph of this rubbish: 1. Tottenham have spent nearly as much Chelsea in the last few years In the two years prior to the last two years how much of Abramovich's money did Chelsea spend to set up the club? Hundreds of thousands! Chelsea are buying in a couple of players at a time to bolster their already quality squad. 2. can’t really say they have topped anything worthwhile aside from the Carling Cup There's quite a few teams outside of the CL4 who'd be rather happy with finally getting their hands on a trophy this decade!! 3. They blew the same amount of money on Darren Bent that Barcelona spent on Thierry Henry and though they both flopped So he's done nothing for one season and he's a flop? How realistic was it ever going to be that Bent was going to get in front of Berba and (the main striker at Spurs) Keano? Spurs definitely over-spent on Bent (mainly due to West Ham sticking their oar in - grr) and he's obviously not in Henry's class (even now!). Finally - Tottenham Hotspur PLC runs in the black each year. We're leveraged but so is every other PLC! We might spend, but that's because, unlike Everton and other clubs (without their Sugar-daddies) we can afford to. That'll do for now - I'll come back later if you write any more crap...

What a silly, uninformed article
by P Dave on May 13, 2008
Spurs is such a well run club that spending 16m on a player is obviously no big deal so whats your problem ?? I can think of no other reason for this article other than pure green eyed monster , how terribly sad
by Dev on May 13, 2008
What kind of crap is that D. Bent flopped? How many games has he started for Tottenham and how many games has Henry started for Barcelona?? Bent must of got about..7 starts and Henry has played for Barcelona non-stop and I bet D. Bent's scored more goals than Henry has this season If D. Bent is given a chance, he'll be scoring goals, don't talk so much crap people.
by StAlbansSpur on May 13, 2008
Of the top six leading premiership goalscorers this year, Berbatov and Keane are both in there. How do you expect Bent to get a decent run in the team with those two ahead of him? If you add up what we spent on Bent and Berbatov together, it is still less than either Drogba or Shevchenko on their own. Grow up and spout your crap elsewhere!
The Arsenal team that played Man U at the Emirates this season cost 37.1 million to assemble if you would like to DIVIDE that by two eighteen and a half million....
Chris , is that the same team that has won sod all 4 years running ? hmmmmmmmmmmm
