The end of the Premier League season is here, and what an ending. Soon too will be the final of the Champions League, after which player trading will begin. Rumour mills will start working overtime and everyone expects the best for their respective teams.

Chelsea will spend a squillion pounds on a few players in their prime. Sir Alex Ferguson, who deserves congratulations on winning the title again, will bolster his impressive squad. Rafa Benitez will add more souls to the ever-ending rotation and Arsene Wenger will undoubtedly pluck some unknown youngster from the Australian Second Division or equivalent and try turn him into a star.

With the increased prize money and rich owners, money for the transfer dealings for top teams is secure.  The interesting part comes with teams lower in the table. The teams that struggle every year to qualify for Europe like Tottenham and Newcastle seem to be able to spend outrageous amounts on players and yet under-perform every year.

'Tottenham blew the same amount of money on Darren Bent that Barcelona spent on Thierry Henry and though they both flopped, Henry at least sold some shirts'

Some transfer spending is logical but as Everton prove, it’s not the basis for progress. Everton don’t seem to be able to flex nearly the same kind of muscle, even Arsenal who play regularly play in the Champions League don’t seem to be able to match this kind of spending. Are these clubs banking on future success to validate the initial outlay? Leeds did that and we all know how that turned out.

Tottenham have spent nearly as much Chelsea in the last few years and can’t really say they have topped anything worthwhile aside from the Carling Cup. They blew the same amount of money on Darren Bent that Barcelona spent on Thierry Henry and though they both flopped, Henry at least sold some shirts.

Now not to pick on them but they have just spent another ridiculous amount of money on Luka Modric, and for that much money he had better be really good and at least on a shortlist for some individual awards next year. I’m sure Spurs fans do not want to be featured highly on the biggest flops lists again.

The transfer window will reveal how many more players will Arsenal be linked with and not sign and who is going to extort Chelsea for the most money.

And where Jose Mourinho will end up.
