The big decisions that gifted Manchester United the Premier League title
Sir Alex's men beat Wigan 2-0 at the JJB to seal their tenth title in 16 seasons - but their victory was certainly not without controversy.

Referee Steve Bennett undoubtedly had a terrible first half at the JJB on Sunday, in which he made two unbelievable decisions in Manchester United’s favour, and also awarded a very debatable penalty against Wigan.
With the match goalless after 25 minutes, Rio Ferdinand blatantly blocked a Jason Koumas shot with his upper arm; however, Bennett, in pole position, bottled it and instead awarded only a corner to Wigan. Maybe he knew how much the game meant to United, and that's why he didn’t hand the home side an opportunity to take the lead!
If Wigan had put away the penalty they certainly deserved, then the title could well have ended up in London rather than Manchester. What we definitely know is that it would have been a very different game.

what childish claptrap another example of what you want to see. The ball clearly hit Rio's shoulder - hence the bounce off the bone - not as it would've been cushioning off an arm. Scholes getting sent off would've ben the worst decision since Irwin going off at Anfailed in '99. The way United have been barged into, tackled at crutch-height and even head height, long after the ball has gone, by lesser lights, particularly from Citeh, Portsmouth, Bolton and yes, Arsenal, whilst referees look on unmoved. Two recent, blatant penalties denied at both Blackburn and Stamford Bridge as well as two one-on ones wrongly flagged offside don't even begin to tre-dress the balance. United don't get the penalties because referees are wary of the national outcry by clowns such as this one. Whilst the press, after failing to motivate West Ham, try their luck with Wigan with jibes of collusion fail to notice Newcastle or Cite's lame capitulation. It's all a conspiracy - and always has been against the Reds but it still didn't stop the serial Champs. Just try to enjoy it.

Well Sam, i understand your frustration at not getting the expected finale to this exciting race ! However, let me remind you that against Middlesboro,a penalty was denied to United following an even more flagrant armball by the defender (he was diving with arms up...) and then against blackburn, three legitimate penalty appeals turned down for United...Had they gone right, these decisions would already have settled the title race much earlier..So be a happy Man!

Absolutely rubbish! Firstly it was never hand ball(Go and learn the rules) and secondly 99 out of 100 'unbiased' neutral football viewers would agree it was penalty for Manu(the 100th one will be the write of such nonsense). Anyway united are CHAMPIONS and well deserved champions! They were simply the best.

Your Sam Dalton clearly cannot stomach the fact that United won squarely. He is a disgrace to journalism. I hope he felt thoroughly sick on the occasion. He questions the blatant foul on Rooney (the penalty which was awarded), and dreams up a penalty (Ferdinand) that was clearly a chest/shoulder incident and nothing more. He makes a meal out of the Scholes incidents and completely overlooks two occasions,, in the Wigan box, which should have been penalised, One was a clear hand to the ball by a Wigan player, and the other was a equally clear upending of Scholes. Football reporting, Mr Daltaon, is not about liking the result, it is about telling the facts honestly and objectively.

Firstly Romeo, I think you'll find that TV replays clearly show Ferdinand DID handle the ball inside the area. And Patrick, I did actually say Manchster United deserved the title at the end of the article, but they were just given a big helping hand on the final day by Steve Bennett. The publishers and editors of this site have changed my headline as well to twist the article a bit.

stop been frustrated. united truely deserve the title for a lot of reasons but to mention few..1.they scored the most goals.2.conceded least goals.3.kept several clean sheets.4.had dominance over the big 4..united didnt recieve any favour from bennet. lets not forget it was this same ref tht issued ronaldo red card against portmount first leg premiership? Against portmouth, it was the ref tht kicked man u out cos the block(foul) on ronaldo wasnt given... so wuts ur point. u were expecting wigan(tht hasnt gotten any point off United since they came to the premiership) to perform miracle for u on the last day? Where were u when others where winning matches, lol...United r the true and confirmed champions so go get some work to do if ur tired been a journalist. I doubt if you have all your credentials complete..United for ever. Up sir alex, up coaching team, up united players, up united fans all over the world. most popular team in the world, richest club int he world, richest in global market, the team tht has the LMA of the year, PFA, Writers football of the year, highest goal scorer in the league, highest goal scorer in europe. Most expensive player in the world at the moment(C.Ronaldo) and the World best to be....go on united, we your supporters here in nigeria africa are right behind you.

Very biased article. Rio clearly shouldered the ball. If you want confirmation watch the total absense of reaction from the Wigan players. Rooney's was a clear penalty - no effort to get the ball just the man. Same can be said for an even more blatent penalty on Scholes that was not given - the ref clearly felt uncomfortable about giving 2 penalties to United for fear of appearing biased. Scholes was let off because it was a strong shoulder charge not an injury - threatening tackle. Overall United clearly deserved to win the game and the title. So just get over it Sam and take your blinkers off.

if it was the other way round and a wigan player handled the ball and another got away with 2 bookable offences then fergie would of had the ref sacked or demoted to the championship. fair play to manu i think that they have been the best side this season and deserve the title, but even the most biasd fan would have to agree the big 4 do get the majority of decisions going their way.

What a complete load of bollocks. The only question that needs answering is, "Is Sam Dalton a bitter Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool fan?" Rooney penalty debateable?! And then curiously omitting the TWO OTHER clear penalties that United should have had when Scholes was hacked down by Bramble, and when Boyce handled the ball first with the decision miraculously going against Rooney! Anyway, you can be as bitter as you like. All I really need to say is "Champions!"
by Sam Dalton on May 14, 2008
The things is, Scholes shouldn't have been on the pitch when he was hacked down, so even debating whether that should have been a penalty is really quite stupid.
