Is Ronaldo heading for the same Manchester United fate as Beckham?
After pushing Goldenballs out of Old Trafford only a few years ago because of ego issues, ir Alex Ferguson may well turn his axe in the direction of his latest superstar for similar reasons.

Sir Alex Ferguson was protecting the status and identity of Manchester United when he let David Beckham move to Real Madrid, but after leaving a gaping gap in quality on the right-hand side of United’s midfield for a number of years, a new talent has now filled that berth.
That talent is Cristiano Ronaldo, currently the world’s best player after netting over 40 goals in an absolutely devastating campaign for his club.
But Beckham was once United’s superstar, and Fergie eventually didn’t take kindly to that kind of figure overshadowing what the club as a whole was achieving on the pitch. Excited spectators would turn up at Old Trafford, not caring what the result would be and not knowing anything about the team they were about to watch, but only to gaze and stare at the world phenomenon before their eyes, striding across the turf of the Theatre of Dreams.
Maybe Ferguson knew his team may struggle somewhat after the departure of such an influential player, but all he wanted was for the whole club to be back as the main focal point, and as the reason people would come to watch.

Ronaldo's comments weren't to the Telegraph, they were in the media zone at the Player of the Year Award. He was questioned several times about why he doesn't perform against the big clubs (which he does) and will he need to perform at the CL Final to stand a chance of the World Player Award. So on a day when he's celebrating the two English Player of the Year Awards, the Golden Boot, his Premiership Winners Medal and the United player awards, he's asked why he isn't the best. Under those circumstances, I think he was quite restrained. He's won every award that's been decided this year and helped his club side to back to back Championships and the CL Final and his country to the Euro 2008; what more can he do? And yet there's still a conspiracy of London-based journalists who try to damn him.

I honestly dont think he has a huge ego. No more than most great players. Hes got a little bit of a cocky attitude i guess. He does that whole Cantona thing when he scores a goal, a kind of shrug of the shoulders as if it was as easy as taking a breath. But most Utd fans love that. I dont think Fergie would get rid of him for that. Dont forget Beckham was slowing down considerably when he was outcast and Ronaldo is a better player now than Becks ever was.
