Full-backs are at the root of Liverpool's problems
John Arne Riise, Steve Finnan and Alvaro Arbeloa were all a bit of a letdown this season. For that matter, so were Harry Kewell and Jermaine Pennant in front of them.

A few Liverpool players disappointed this season - with the full-backs especially found wanting. John Arne Riise and Steve Finnan were consistently under par and simply did not play to their full potential.
Last season, Finnan was arguably one of Liverpool’s best players. Mr. Reliable had been whipping in crosses that strikers thrive on. His tackling was excellent and he didn’t have one bad game. He also beat out stiff competition from new boy Alvaro Arbeloa.
This season has been different. While Finnan hasn’t been conspicuously bad, he hasn’t been playing to his absolute best. Of course, injuries have played their part, but he has been struggling. We all know he can be a better player and hopefully next term he can be outstanding.
Riise had a nightmare season that finished with his bizarre own-goal against Chelsea. He started the season as a left-winger and looked excellent. However, when he was reverted to his original left-back slot, his defensive abilities came back into question. The previous season, he had an excellent showing, scoring a thunderbolt against PSV and remaining consistent in his form. But this term, he has been off his mark all the way. Riise has good attacking ability but his defensive skills are erratic and a permanent move to midfield could benefit him.
Arbeloa has also not been at his best after making his full debut against Barcelona. Rafa Benitez must have had tremendous faith in him to make such a daring move and it paid off brilliantly as he kept Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho quiet. He has improved, and even earned a call to Spain's Euro 2008 squad. He is a good defender but the best is still yet to come.
Liverpool’s best full-back this term, without a doubt, has been Fabio Aurelio. He is also the club's most improved player and has made some key tackles. He isn’t afraid of getting forward and contributed significantly in the middle part of the season, before his injury against Chelsea.
Before Momo Sissoko was sold in January, he had numerous disappointing outings. A brilliant tackler, he just didn’t seem to know how to pass the ball properly. He had shown glimpses of what he could achieve during the previous season, but failed to build on it.
Harry Kewell's Liverpool career has been filled with injuries. He can be a great player when fit, but injured, he’s useless. This season was especially disappointing, having been given a run in the Champions League, and ultimately he declined a new contract with Liverpool.
FInally, Jermaine Pennant has not reproduced his form of late last season. He did tremendously against AC Milan, and scored a stunner against Chelsea. This term was marked by two fluke goals against Newcastle and Fulham respectively and he has reportedly been told he can look for a new club.
All these players have lacked the consistency and form they showed in previous seasons. While some may not be evidently 'disappointing', they surely have not been playing with the same tenacity and will.

Harry Kewell must be the biggest disappointment of the last decade. Finally fit, and offered the chance to show Rafa what he can really do, he's decided to go after more money elsewhere. Good riddance!

Not sure I can agree with you about Riise, being good in attack? The lad was unable to pass the ball five yards, cross, dribble, get to the by line or kick with his right foot( no final in Moscow, because of it!) We used to get the odd thunder bolt, but they dried up years ago. Arbeloa, Finnan and Aurelio are good players, but not in the same league as Glichy, Evre, Sagna, Ashley Cole and D Alaves. I believe Insua, will make the grade and at this early stage is the best full back we have, but he is very young and could lack experience in the big games? Not sure about Degen? Time will tell. Looks like we are still shopping at primark, while the rest are at Harrods! If utd get D Alaves and Benzema, then it really will be stacked against us. Have to pull out all the stops, to stop them getting 18 titles!

Hello Phil. I agree 100%. I find it absolutely amazing about Kewell & then says he will show Rafa!. He had the chance to show Rafa, but said no to a new contract, sorry but he´s a greedy bastxxrd! Sorry Kewell but you are a Liverpool Flop!

Kewell is a greedy bastard and it pleases me to finally see him leave Merseyside. I have total belief in Benitez and his dealings. Right back is not identified as problem area number one, that`s why we are bringing in Degen. Strength in depth. Next season Rafa can call upon Finnan, Arbeloa, Degen and even Carragher in this position. At left back we replace Riise with Dossena, and have plenty depth with Aurelio and Insua as back-up. Which means we have reinforced the back line for a few million quid. Which means Benitez can put his money into the areas of greater concern, namely the wings. Benayoun and Kuyt will probably stay, but it`s fair to expect that Pennant, Voronin and Crouch will follow Kewell out the back-door. Which means we should expect three-four signings in offensive positions. These players need to be of high quality, and Rafa knows this. There`s no point replacing Pennant with Aaron Lennon. If you get my drift. We need match-winners. And I think Benitez will prefer versatile attacking midfielders rather than classic wingers a la Downing. Which means we should be looking at players such as Diego, Kranjcar, Hamsyk, Pjanic, Rakitic, Johnson, Ramsey, Nasri, Ribery (haha), Turan, Ben Arfa, Dempsey, etc, etc... And we need a couple of strikers. One talent and one quality second striker. That player won`t be David Villa or Aguero, but maybe someone like Zarate or Arshavin. We`ll see :)

Hey, I agree with you about everyone but Pennant and Arbeloa. Arbeloa has been in magnificent form, easily Liverpool's best over the first 2 months but was struck down with injury midseason. even then he was able to be selected for the Spainsh team for the first time and is in the squad for Euro. Pennant is in the same boat. excellent at the beginning before succumbing to stress fractures whilst pushing for international selection. was unlucky not to get into the first team post rotation policy being scrapped but when he has been given the chance, like crouch, he has succeeded.

I have to agree that your fullbacks have been the biggest dissapointment this season, watching the 4 games between Liverpool and Arsenal (how the hell didn;t we win atleast 2 of those games?) we had most of our positive play came from down the flanks against you. your central defence is very good, solid and reliable, a little better than ours, but our fullbacks are in a different league, Sagna and Clichy are simply 2 of the best in Europe and that pillock who runs the national side didn't call either, instead choosing Abidal and Sagnol, i mean come on WTF??? If you can sort the full backs out you'll be much more competitive in the league next season! Thats why he signed Degen (sp?) me thinks!
