Foster, Young, Pedersen and Martins - the players Aston Villa MUST sign to drive forward
Due to Martin O’Neill's inspired signings and fantastic man-management, Villa have made the jump from 16th to sixth in just two seasons. Here are the gaps in the squad that must be filled to carry on the push for success.

It’s a well-known fact just how small and threadbare the Aston Villa squad is. Now, with an oncoming European campaign as well as the League, FA Cup and Carling Cup, Randy Lerner is going to have to open that big cheque book of his and not only do some signing, but do some smart signing.
There are several positions that need looking at within the squad and, when they are, the Villans will be able to push on...
Goalkeeper: Scott Carson’s trial period has been somewhat of a success but with Martin O’Neill being reluctant to spend £10million on the young England international, he must have someone lined up to fill his gloves.
Ben Foster has been identified as a suitable replacement and, although he will be extremely difficult to prise from Manchester United, a loan deal would not be out of the question should they want to continue with Champions League hero Edwin van der Sar.
The youngster has been out injured for the majority of the season but a loan deal at Villa would be mutually beneficial for all parties as Sir Alex Ferguson would be keen for Foster to gain more Premier League experience, as would Foster himself.
This would then give O’Neill the chance to bring in American Brad Guzan to work as a number two and learn how the English game works. If that fails, there is always United's current number two Thomas Kuszczak, who would be a realistic long-term signing.
Right-back: Having gone all season without a recognised full-back, O’Neill has had to shuffle the team about playing both Olof Mellberg and Craig Gardner in the position. With Mellberg’s departure to Juventus and Gardner still learning the trade, a right-back is a vital signing that needs to be made.
It’s no secret the interest O’Neill has in Porto’s Jose Bosingwa, but with a relatively high asking price and Chelsea showing an interest, this doesn’t look likely. Therefore Nelson, who O’Neill has already had a rejected bid forl should be one of the top targets. He has said he's happy at Benfica but if Villa were to up the undisclosed offer then this could happen.
At third choice, O’Neill could continue with his English policy and sign Middlesbrough’s Luke Young. Not the best option, but would be a much-needed addition to a side so desperate for a right-back.
Centre-back: Mellberg’s departure has left a gaping hole at the back, where he and Martin Laursen have been in outstanding form. The permanent signing of Curtis Davies after a successful loan period from West Bromwich Albion will go some way to softening the blow, but another centre-back is needed.
O’Neill is likely to sign a more developed player to replace Mellberg to continue the development of players like Davies, which is why it has come as no surprise that Villa have been linked with Daniel van Buyten, who should be allowed to leave German giants Bayern Munich this summer.
Right wing: With Ashley Young being in outstanding form this season it has made him a marked man, so to speak. Teams have noticed that a large proportion of the Villa attack goes down the left and have started packing that side of the pitch to neutralise the threat from the pacey England star.
That’s why a player of similar ability is needed for the right side of midfield to be able to terrify teams down both flanks. I would love to say David Bentley for Villa, but that is highly unrealistic. The signing of Wayne Routledge in January was probably more of a back-up plan seeing as he hardly featured, but a long-term plan is much-needed.
Stiliyan Petrov is not the ideal winger as he isn’t the quickest of players and, despite recent good form, is still struggling to settle in England. I have long been a fan of Blackburn’s Morten Gamst Pedersen and he would be a signing that wouldn’t break the bank as he has not been in his best form this season.
This would free up Young to move to the right side and play Pedersen on the left to have a serious threat down both sides. If O’Neill wants to be really ambitious then he may revisit his interest in Shaun Wright-Phillips now that he can offer European football.
Centre midfield: Another Chelsea player, Steve Sidwell, is being strongly linked with a move to Villa and O’Neill has stated he is being targeted as a partner to Gareth Barry, not a replacement. Nigel Reo-Coker has been outstanding all season since his move from West Ham so, although not the most important of positions to be filled, a signing will have to be made at some point to pack out the Villa engine room.
Forward: Although Villa haven't struggled to bang in the goals, finishing third in the scoring charts behind Manchester United and Arsenal, they are still in need of a 20-goal-a-season hitman.
John Carew has been in fine form, scoring 13 goals along with numerous assists. If he can improve on that, a new striker may not be needed. There have been rumours in the past of a move for Newcastle’s Obafemi Martins and a signing like this would only add to an already impressive attacking line-up. O’Neill and Lerner have their work cut out to fill all the problem areas but, as well as this, they need to pack out the squad to cope with the demands of a European campaign.
Some people doubt the club's spending power of, but it’s not a question of not having the money, it’s due to O’Neill’s reluctance to spend big on players with inflated prices. Many doubted the £9million spent on Young, but look how that turned out. I, for one, am still fully behind the signings O’Neill is no doubt going to make.

we need some more squad players to be fair, randy learners got loads of money he needs to buy birmingham city and close them down for good up the villa!!!!
Why should we loan another keeper and help out Man United? I'd try Guzan again he didn't join us in the winter because he couldn't get a work permit. Boswinga is at Chelsea, We have agood chance of signing Hoyte who despite the criticism from people has played nearly 50 games for Arsenal including champions league experience. Why sign a Pederson? I don't think it would work having two players playing on their stronger foot on the opposite side of the wing. It works weel for Young but we need some balance in our midfield. I'd rather sign Milner who shown a lot of potential during his loan and I think we have a realistic chance of signing him, plus Pederson hasn't shown his true form for Blackburn this season. I'd love us to sign Martins though.

Actually we finished 2nd in the scoring charts in the premier league. Also Van Buyten wants to stay at Bayern and I don't think that O'neill is particularly interested in him.

You say Reo Coker has been oustanding all season?? That tells me you have never watch Villa this season. Reo Coker has been out of his depth. Without doubt 1 of the worst players i have ever seen in a Villa shirt. Cant pass , Cant tackle.
by Jason Willis on May 24, 2008
Alexei - No, Villa were third with 71 goals, Arsenal 74 & Manchester United 80... Stuart - Reo-Coker is a workhorse player who isn't flashy, puts his head down and does the business. A Gavin McCann type but better.
by Danny on May 25, 2008
Stuart - reo coker is the worst player you have seen in a villa shirt? You have obviously not been to any villa games as there have been far worse player than coker, and i agree with jason, he is a battler like gavin mccann, the type of player every team has (chelsea-essien, man u-carrick ect). As for the signings: I'd like us to get martins definately, bentley would be nice but i don't see him coming to us, hoyte is an on/off player, prefer nelson of benfica. Villa's best signing of the summer will be gareth barry given that he does not leave to pool and signs a new contract
by Imhotep on May 25, 2008
I'm quite impressed that for a player who can't tackle, he ended up top of the most successful tackles list in the premier league this season. Oh dear...
by Sam on May 25, 2008
never mind SWP. people forget he is no longer a prospect. the bloke is 26 now and therefore hardly one for the future. Bentley yes i would love to see him sign, however he would cost more than i think we would be willing to pay. a dream i think. Victor Moses of Palace would be an equally quality player and would cost less. he has more flair i think. The right back problem. Luke young is not good enough for a top 10 team let alone us. Ageing, slow...hes just not the player to fill the void. I would be much happier with a younger signing with less experience and more potential. Justin Hoyte would be a good option. The idea of having Sidwell, Barry and NRC to choose from in midfield. Love it. Nicky shorey as competition for bouma. Sounds good. A new striker the 20 a season one you were talking of...Darren Bent would be ideal i think. English, a proven scorer and would come at a good price. Him and carew starting with Gabby as a second half impact player. It just seems to make sense! The goalkeeper issue! well carson is tooooo expensive so hes out. Whats the fuss with this Guzan? Anyone seen him play? I certainly havent so cannot have an opinion. Loaning foster would be good but do we not want a player to build a team around? I think we definately do, and as he is due to leave on a free, Jussi Jaaskelainen would be a fantastic signing. He would come with experience which would be vital. Players to get rid of? Petrov. He will never adapt to the premiership. he should go back to play for celtic in the micky mouse league.
Sam - I think guzan was goalkeeper of the year in the MLS league, though with the standard of the american league i'm not too sure if thats much significance. Apperently he's a good shot stopper, but we'll soon find out in the England v USA friendly on wednesday - if he's given a game. I reckon MON will sign a couple of keepers though.
by Jonard on May 25, 2008
Ambition?... We need quality players not ageing squad players. And bosingwa? he's gone to Chelsea!! Here is proper talent avaiable to us Goalkeeper: Lehmann free Guzan 2 million Right back: Nelson 5 million Centre back: Alex(chelsea) 6 million Per Mertesacker 10 million Left back : Risse 5 million Midfiled :Diego 12 million :Sidewell 5 million Striker : Huntelaar 18 million I know the signing of Huntelaar would be optimistic but if we achieve European football through winning the Intertoto then why not bid for him?
Also on that article there.. As for the strikers if we missed out on Huntelaar ,Antonio Cassano is absolute quality and could be got cheap as he is not wanted at real . He's on loan at Sampdoria and has been scoring like mad again. Also Henry is available from Barca and I don't need to even mention his quality
by jack gaskin on May 25, 2008
i know swp is 26 but hes quality and in my opinion would be the perfect choice for the right mid slot.also nelson at right back, richard dunne at cb,id like an up and coming left back to learn from bouma, real madrids drenthe perhaps.also sidwell krancjar darren bent and wed be inb contention of 4th place without a doubt
by Richard Rees on May 25, 2008
We dont need another loan signing for a keeper but i dont know why we dont go for santa cruz and Bentley from Blackburn and as for rightback we need to big signings, i would love to see another pacey winger wright Philips would be brilliant. Villa are going forward and why shoulnd we aim high we are a big club and i think we need to have the ground at for expansion, we could fill it if we had 60,000 plus especially if we continue with this manager and chairman long.... Villa 4 life!!!!
by george carroll on May 25, 2008
Reo coker cant tackle i can tell u definately aint been watching villa this season he's one of the best tacklers in the prem mate
by Kevin Ashton on May 26, 2008
I've been a Villa Fan for 40 years even watched them in the old 3rd Division. If we want to keep Capt. Fantastic..it is time to splash the cash and show Gareth a serious intention to get and stay in European Football. The trouble is whilst some good progress has been made since Mon became manager...The Villa dont have the pressure or competition of other local Premiership sides. Totenham on the other hand have to try and match the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal. I still dont understand the signing of Routledge if he is not good enough to break into the first team? Nor am I convinced of the quality of Zat Knight so far. Did Olef go because he didn't think there was much chance of silverware before he retires? But my main question to Martin is...Are you building team like Man U (if so you need to attract top players with top wages) or are you building another Leicester?.. a mid table...hard to beat side put together on a budget.
by benni on May 26, 2008
SWP would be an inferior signing to someone like Pedersen or Milner. Why? Simple. SWP's crossing is poor. As for Riise...no. Just no. He is good going forward but a defensive liability. I'd rather stick with Bouma, who is reliable at the back but is weak on the break...and stay with O'Halloran as backup. At right back, I'd say Hoyte would be ok, Young would be ok, and Nelson would be brilliant. So would Miguel btw. Centre back van buyten would be nice. end of. I think we need another battling midfielder though to push forward. Someone like (I'll probably get stick for this) Bullard or Nolan. I'm still not sure why we let Davis go btw. As for striker....I had hoped we'd get Defoe in January but oh well. Now I think we might have to redirect our attention toward someone like Martins. He would be a brilliant signing with his pace and finishing. As for the criticisms - I think people need to show more patience. Rushing in wont solve anything, maybe one trophy (probably the league cup at that) and then a swift return to mediocrity. It would be seen as a fluke. I'd rather have a manager who slowly builds a squad with decent backup players, and a strong young core who will challenge for silverware regularly in the near future. I'd rather see the team improve slowly and deliberately, without wasting millions on players we'll never see the best of *coughBalabancough* *coughAlpaycough* than spend a truckload in two seasons and STILL fail. Look at tottenham - since they were mentioned - they've spent how much recently and STILL finished mid-table. As for ambition - Olof left because he is already approaching the twilight of his career at age 30, and Juventus are a globally respected team. Its not the kind of chance he is likely to get again. Barry is only 27 and captain of an improving side, he stayed last time because he believes Villa can bring him the silverware a player of his talents deserves. If he stayed another year, he could still move on if he wasnt convinced, since he still has a good 6-7 years left (a la Ryan Giggs perhaps)..Mellberg might not have that chance at his age, he probably only has a couple more good seasons left before the decline. Moving to Italy is smart, because he can play at the highest level there for even longer (slower pace of game). I speculate that if Liverpool had come in for Mellberg, I doubt he would have been so quick to leave.

Come on Villa! Please sign Pedersen! If we can make money out of that donkey I will be a happy chappy!
