As defiant Boothroyd goes it alone, Ellington's Derby link delights Watford fans
Hornets boss Aidy Boothroyd is seemingly the only person who doesn't think he needs help. Whilst he assesses his future and prepares to mount another promotion challenge next season, he has received the welcome news that someone might be mad enough to buy Nathan Ellington.

There's good news and bad news for Watford fans today. Aidy Boothroyd has announced that he will not be bringing in an assistant to help him - and Derby County are hopeful of signing Nathan Ellington from the Hornets.
The first news is, in my opinion, disastrous for Watford FC. Boothroyd had the experienced Keith Burkinshaw alongside him through his successes at the club and, indeed, Watford were top of the Championship this season until Burkinshaw left.
After that, in the second half of the season we won just five games out of 23. We somehow still got to the play-offs but a 6-1 demolition by Hull City kind of summed things up.
Boothroyd has many great qualities and I hope he stays in charge at Vicarage Road for next season. But I think he has made a big mistake here. He needs help. He has shown himself to be tactically naïve and his efforts in the transfer market, despite some successes, have on the whole been abysmal.
I have no doubt that Boothroyd needs someone alongside him who he respects and trusts, who can advise him when necessary and not just be a yes man like Bradley Walsh to Ricky Tomlinson’s Mike Bassett. Somebody needed to persuade Boothroyd to change the style of play long before the end of the season. We were being beaten by everyone yet he stubbornly refused to make changes. Where was the experienced voice of reason to assist him at that difficult time?
Boothroyd's inability in the transfer market leads me on to the second piece of news concerning Ellington. This player was brought into the club to score the goals to take us to promotion. We paid a preposterous £4m for a man who struggled to make the West Brom bench. Surely it must have struck Boothroyd as unusual that fellow promotion chasers were prepared to sell this man to one of their rivals?
I remember seeing comedian Frank Skinner, a big West Brom fan, saying on the television that he wanted to thank Watford so much for taking Ellington away from the Hawthorns.
Ellington had a great season at Wigan where in total, he scored 59 league goals in 134 games. That’s a pretty good strike rate. In 2005 he joined West Brom where he managed just 15 goals in 68 appearances. Tony Mowbray must have thought it was Christmas when Boothroyd came calling with his cheque book. Get rid of dead wood. Earn four million quid and give a useless lump to one of our main rivals. Not a bad deal.
Of course, Ellington went on to prove all the doubters wrong. Oh no, wait a minute, he didn’t. Four goals in 34 games for the Hornets equated to £1m a goal.
Derby County are welcome to him. I hope he recaptures some form for them, but if I were a Ram, I wouldn’t be holding my breath!

I have to say that the idea of Aidy Boothroyd going solo is the worst he has ever had made, he clearly is not ready to do so as we found out towards the end, seeing as we only won 5 games out of the 23 as mentioned. The problem seemed to stem from the sacking of his assistants despite him only having 2 full seasons experience as manager. Secondly, i seem to be one of the very few people that like Ellington and think that he will be a great striker if, and this is a big if, we can start to play the ball to his feet and have players running off the ball so he has support. At the moment we seem to hit the long ball up to Henderson and let him try to win the ball in the air, which he can not do because most defenders seem to foul him and other times he seems to have decisions go against him. The first game we got to see any sign on potential from him was the first leg of the play off semi final, but the game was against us from the start and nothing went right. But i still think that he and Priskin are the best two strikers we have at the moment and the whole team would benefit if we changed our style of play and play it on the floor.

Daniel is clearly on the wright lines were he says the root of the problem stemed from the sacking and departure of key back room staff from a manager with only two seasons behind. The problem Aidy has is he that he cannot see a potenial good player, he has rely on other people's recomendations. I know for a fact one of the reasons for Keith Berkinshaw leaving was Aidy only wanted to play long game. When Keith wanted to mix it up and play some passing. We have a long way to go before we can have any chance of the premiership position. It will be interseting to see what Aidy does over the summer.

It seems to me Aidy lost the crowd at the last two homes games before the play offs. Lets face it, if Hendo had scored those two pens, and we had beaten Scunthorpe and Barnsley we would have gone up. The Chairman spent the Crystal Palace game in the Rookery, the first game when the team were really booed off the pitch, and Aidy seems to have taken the hint that things need to change. The team were applauded off the pitch in both play-off games because the fans could see we were trying something different. I spent some time at the end of season dinner talking individually with some of the team and it was clear there was some frustration, so at least we have gone into the long summer months with some hope. Some hope that when we start again in August we will attempt some passing football. Perhaps we should ask the Sarries to wear plimsolls to keep it flat for us! I can still hear the WBA fans.............. "three nil to the football team" Here's hoping. A
