Revealed: The Aston Villa dead wood that O'Neill must cut away
Patrick Berger and Thomas Sorensen are already on their way - but they could easily by joined by Stiliyan Petrov, Mustapha Salifou, Wayne Routledge and a few more.

Thomas Sorensen’s consistent moaning about not being picked in goal for Aston Villa was due to his own inability to crack on and stake a claim for the No.1 jersey through hard work and determination. Instead the Dane floundered and only hastened Martin O’Neill’s goalkeeper search.
Like Sorensen, it was no surprise that Patrick Berger has been shown the Villa exit after his comments to the media encouraging Gareth Barry to make the switch to Liverpool, which outraged O’Neill due to the club sticking with him through his injury-blighted three-year stay at the club.
There are others within the squad who need to pick themselves up, or get themselves out after a disappointing season throughout 2007-08:
Shaun Maloney – Not so much a disappointing season as such, but by now I’d expected the young Scot to have had more of an impact on the Villa first team. I know there have been many stories linking the young attacker with a move back to Celtic due to his home sickness but his talent is undeniable, so let's hope that O’Neill can get the best out of him, otherwise it may be time to offload him.
Moustapha Salifou – although not a regular in the Villa team, making only four first team appearances, Salifou has now been with the club long enough for O’Neill to get a sense of what the Togolese midfielder is all about. He has been offered a one-year contract extension taking him up to the end of the 2008-09 season.
Maybe there is something in him that the crowd have yet to see, but it still brings back memories of the squad-fillers like Ulises De La Cruz who may need to be off-loaded to make way for players of a higher calibre.
Wayne Routledge – in a similar situation to Salifou, Routledge has made only one first team appearance in the 4-0 win over Bolton, coming on as a late sub. I’m sure he was only a back-up signing by O’Neill to the already problematic right side of midfield. Routledge, however, is not the sort of player Villa should be looking to sign and should be replaced immediately.
Stiliyan Petrov – now finished his second season at Villa Park, the Bulgarian international has still largely not impressed. He did start to play well at the tail-end of last season contributing with the stunning 60-yard goal against Derby but for £6.5m, possibly rising to £8m, O’Neill needs to cut his losses. Write off Petrov of as a bad signing and get rid of the midfielder.
I’ve been largely impressed with the Aston Villa team this season, but there is still a bit of dead wood that Martin O’Neill needs to cut through and replace with better skilled players.
If Villa can get rid of the lower calibre players then their improvement will only continue.
Comments (16) by Jon Davis on May 25, 2008 Why get rid of Routledge, Salifou, Petrov and Maloney? If you got rid of those 4 plus the other players mentioned we would have 13 players left in our squad that would really bode well wouldnt it? Ok if we were to buy some players this summer, it would look better but we would need to buy 8 more players to have the same sized squad as last season and that was the smallest in the league by seven. We would not be able to cope especiall with a really long season with european football and cups etc.. You give me the impression that you would go and buy much better quality to replace these players. Try buying somebody as good as Maloney to sit on the bench, it is not always a good 1st team that means a team does well but the whole squad.Look at Man Utd they have players like O' Shea, Brown, Saha etc on the bench and that makes a huge difference. We are not trying to dismantle a squad but to build one. You have no sense and no knowledge of what a squad needs to be to challenge for 4th place next season. Stop writing meaningless, pointless and sensless article. by dave rogers on May 25, 2008 tottaly agree with jon davis you are clueless, you dont sound like a villa fan you sound like a bandwogon jumper, why would we get rid of that many players when we have a tinny squad, everyone uses petrov a scapegoat he is good enough and has proved that in the second half of the season. get behind the players or dont bother writing stupid little articles you wannabe journalist. by swall on May 25, 2008 Gotta agree with the comments. Squad players are essential to a successful squad. I agree that in the long term we need to get rid of these players, tho petrov did play well in the 3 man midfield n ash in a free role. by villa kewman on May 25, 2008 I agree with all the comments so far, your article or blog or whatever it is, is as uninformed as it is short sighted. The 'deadwood' is floating off already in Berger & Sorenson. Everyone knows (including Martin O'Neil) that we have a paper thin squad and the player you mention are there with no misconception as to their role - they are squad players pushing for a place in the starting XI - with the exception of Petrov who still has not delivered. But he's hardly deadwood cus MON obviously rates him. Get a job or a clue. Your article was complete tat! by jim simmons on May 25, 2008 Agree with the comments above. If we got rid of the players you suggest, we'd barely be able to field a team every week. It's time next season for players like Maloney and Routledge to prove themselves and stake a claim - what would be the point of getting rid of Routledge after one sub appearance? by Dave Melin on May 25, 2008 Jason, everyone is entitled to their opinion and you have voiced yours here. Unfortunately - your opinion is very poor. Petrov was vastly improved at the end of the season, Routledge hasn't really been seen and only left Spurs due to the emergence of Lennon. Salifou is one for the future and Moloney gives us something completely different and scored some crucial goals last season. So all in all - a pretty poor piece of journalism from someone very much not in the know... by Nelson R on May 25, 2008 Have to agree with the comments here. Just wanted to add though that Routledge hasn't even had a proper chance yet! Why cast these off before we've even seen what they are made of?! Also Petrov has been slow in coming to the boil, but as you mention he did look as if he was coming into some form towards the end of the season. I wouldn't want him to be axed. by AA on May 25, 2008 Nothing more really needs adding to the above other than why let someone of such little/basic knowledge of football and more importantly, AVFC write such a poor peace?? You prat, go and watch another team. by Nick Aiken on May 26, 2008 What are you on about, these guys haven't had a chance, and I've more faith in O'Neill's nous than you obviously. So who would you have as subs, the Villa ladies or the under 14's? Stop writing rubbish or be honest and write for Brum. by DAvid GriMble on May 26, 2008 Rubbish article. Routledge had like one minute and will show his worth next season. Salifou has the makings of a top player and is one to watch. Petrov was awesome the latter part of the season and scored the goal of the season. As someone else said your just a fairweather fan. UTV! by Insufferable on May 26, 2008 A ridiculous piece of journalism. Losing these players would deplete our squad significantly. Routledge provides perfect cover for both wings, Salifou has been outstanding for the reserves and Maloney has proved to be a big game performer on more than one occasion this season. Petrov himself has looked a magnificent player since moved to holding midfielder. He has energy, vision and composure and I expect his place to be less in debate than Nigel Reo Coker! by Eam Byrne on May 26, 2008 As a reporter I don't think you have done any research and wouldn't be supprised if you have not attended a Villa game last season. Maloney is a quality player that has been used as a bit part player. Salifou looks a good player but again has not played enough ... ditto Routledge, under O'Neil he could be a real find, give him another season to prove himself. Jason stick to sucking up to the top four ... and research your data when you dip your toe outside. by Gareth Fletcher on May 26, 2008 Have to agree with the rest on here, the players you have called "deadwood" have either vastly improved in the latter stages of the season or have not been given enough of a chance. How could you possibly judge Salifou or Routledge? You do also know that each team are allowed to have additional subs on the bench from next season onwards? Surely we would not be able to fill a bench if all of these players were discarded, unless MO'N decided to bring in about 7 players, all of whom would go straight into the first team. You are not thinking clearly at all. by David Owen on May 26, 2008 God bless Google alert for giving me a great laugh this morning! This article is absolute twaddle!! You seem to think that the premier league is awash with quality players that are just waiting for MON to call them! Why is MON the best league manager by a million miles?. Because he develops squads not individuals. The players you mention in your article are all part of a squad and play as big a part as the 1st team regulars. I agree that we need at least another 8 Squad players, and I look forward to seeing Sidwell and others join the club over the next 6 weeks or so. Only then will we be able to look forward to having a party equal to the one Man U supporters have just had. I for 1 believe that MON will deliver using the skills of Malony, Petrof, Routalage & Salifou. by Callum Marks on May 27, 2008 You dont know what your going on about mate, if you was down the ground at the games week in week out then maybe you could write a better article. I cant believe that ive just wasted 5 minutes of my life reading that clueless article. Im actually disappointed that i wont get them back! by Chris Ballard on June 18, 2008 Salifou and Routledge are going to be fantastic once they get used to the way we play. Petrov I think has already estblished himself in the team, however, Maloney is good when he plays but there isn't that much need for him in the team. Not forgetting we have some absolutely brilliant youth team and reserve players such as Zoltan Stieber, Adam McGurk, Nathan Delfouneso, Barry Bannan, Ciaran Clark and Andreas Weimann.
