After Arsenal’s season went into freefall following the shenanigans at the Birmingham City game, many expected Arsene Wenger and his board to come back strong in the summer.

At times when Liverpool are spending £26m on one player, when Manchester United have a team full of talent and Chelsea have unlimited spending power it’s easy to single out Arsenal as the weakest link in the top four.

'It would be foolish to write Arsenal off as the weakest link in the top four just because of their lack of spending. They don’t need the big bank-busting transfer budget when they have Wenger there working miracles and pulling a rabbit out of a hat'

The remaining member of the Big Four have no qualms about spending an extortionate amount on a player, yet Wenger will search long and hard until he finds the perfect player to sign - which he pulls off with an experience and knowledge that money can’t buy.

It’s not a case of spend big, win big for Wenger and it never has been. The man has an incredible eye for talent and a remarkable knack for getting that talent at bargain prices.

A perfect example of what Wenger does best is Bacary Sagna. At 25, Sagna cost only £7.45m - compare that to Jose Mourihno’s Ricardo Carvalho who cost £19.8m at the age of 26 (he's now 30). Sagna was in outstanding form all season at right-back in the Arsenal defence and in my view is much the better player and better buy of the two.
