It’s been a long, long time and even morphing into Champions League experts is not enough for Liverpool now. The priority must be a serious and sustained attack on the Premier League. After so many barren years watching Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and even Blackburn Rovers lifting the trophy it has got to truly rankle with Anfield fans that they can't seem to get their hands on it.Yes the Champions League is the pinnacle of European football and if Liverpool hadn't won it then the fans would have had no comeback to fellow supporters' taunts. Indeed, now that United have regained the Champions League after almost a decade, the Liverpool fans have lost the ability to mouth off about their own victory. United have it all right now (that really hurt to say that) and only Chelsea look like challenging at the minute.‘The focus has been shifted to Europe by Christmas far too many times recently and making sure that fourth spot is secured. God only knows what would have happened if Liverpool had failed on that front’This summer will bring about many changes at all teams. Alex Ferguson will add to his very talented squad and surely Arsene Wenger will add a little experience to go with the flair at Arsenal. Chelsea will buy big no matter who takes over but with Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan they may lose Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard.Rafa Benitez has really had to work under a bit of a dark cloud recently and has coped admirably with the shenanigans going on at Anfield. The ridiculous rumours of wanting rid of the Spaniard have subsided. The man is doing a good job. The current squad, as has been proved, is nowhere near good enough to win the title. The talent is there. They have goals in the team, a good defence and a creative midfield. So what’s wrong? As much as squad rotation is a necessity in modern football, Benitez's use of that particular system is rather extravagant. Like Arsenal, the replacement squad players sitting in their yo-yo seats on the bench are simply not good enough to cover when the going gets a bit tough. And it gets tougher every single year, make no bones about it.

I predict Liverpool will get close to winning the title in 2028.

--Now Rafa has the money--- ???? Why do people keep saying this? Liverpool have only just spent over 20million on one player for the first time in the clubs history. -- United on the other hand have spent 30 mill on rio - 30mill on rooney - 28mill on veron - 20 million for van nistelrooy, 20 million for Carrick, 20 million for Hargreaves. - Hell, even the likes of Saha and Yorke cost 12mill each. - Liverpool haven't even come close to united's spending power - we have had to settle for 7 or 8 million players over the years. United are the richest club in the world with Real Madrid - (Beckham shirts generated 100million) and to be honest, 2 European cups in 21 years - whilst being that rich - isn't very impressive at all. Liverpool dominated both domestic and european football. United on the other hand have only dominated domestically - with all that cash at their disposal too.

We don't have to shut nobody up - Liverpool are the greater club. Big gate receipts don't make you great, otherwise Newcastle would be the third greatest club in the country. - So what does make a club great?? - Is it fanbase, attendance, turnover ?? Naaah - its silverware, an we have more than anyone in the country. When LFC were collecting trophies, they weren't collecting bumper 50 million rewards - they merely received a handshake. Liverpool were successful in the age of football - United are successful in the age of the franchise - truth hurts!

Therefore...so when Man United were winning countless trophies in the 50's & 60's playing in front of 100,000+ at the Bernebau, what did that make Liverpool who were plying their trade as a run of the mill 2nd division side?
...and to be honest, 0 league titles in 18 years whilst being considered the best team in Europe isn't very impressive at all.

Liverpool to win the league? Not a chance!!! Far too many average players in the squad to mount a title challenge and not enough cash to change the situation. If it were not for Gerard and Torres Liverpool would have finished mid table last season.

liverpool are wank, they have had the money, benitez just buys 5 players worth 7m whereas ferguson will go buy 2 worth 17m, benitez is a spanish knob and as long as he is in charge i am happy as liverpool will not win the league with him in charge. Don't know if people realised but Liverpool actually finished a place lower this year than last. Great progress lads! keep it up!
anyone notice how liverpool finished a place below this season than last? great progress boys, your getting nearer and nearer to that title! keep it up and make mr benitez proud

You'll have to win it 10 times to actually shut us up......
by Nozzy on June 04, 2008
We dont need to shut anyone up in fairness. United have been around longer than us, spent more money than anyone else in the history of english football (look it up ;)) and STILL havent caught up. The fact that United have spent decades and hundreds of millions playing catch up isnt something to be proud of, ya know? And neither is ya best player wanting to leave..... Or you being the most indebted club in football history. Oh my.

the truth is we have not won the league in 18 coming on 19 years and united are still behind us in titles one pretty sad considering the hundreds of millions spent in that time on wasters such as veron, saha, etc and to the dumb arse who said no progress had been made well the truth is we cut 10 points of the distance between us and the champions and we also lost fewer games than the champions and scored more goals overall and scored more points than the previous season now if that is not progress then what is and united fans should be scared as we our a club back on up with a very good academy and youth system and the best reserve team england with players who could with time become as good as messi, torres, and gerrard the three best players in the world

Im an Arsenal fan and I just have to say without trying to have a pop at anyone Liverpool havn't a hope of winning the title anytime soon wit Rafa around. We played some excellent and consistant football this season and still lost out to United due to us having a light squad. Most of Uniteds subs would make the liverpool team. They only players anyone would want is torres and mayb Gerrard. He wastes too much money, hes tactics are shit (long ball park the bus in front of goal, hope for a bit of luck or a Babel dive) and he actually still plays Dirk Kuyt after watching the clown for what 2 seasons now ha ?. As I said I'm not having a pop but surely ye fans must agree with me

Liverpool are the 2nd biggest net sepnders overs the last 5 years, you can say what you want about not buying Rio etc but you have spent money boys. Nevermind eh lads give the waiter another 150m and he can buy another 59 players over the next 5 years and who knows you may just end up with two world class players in torres and whoever.

Liverpool didnt get relegated in 74
by Ged on June 05, 2008
There can be no question that United have been fortunate with the timing of their success. They have generated staggering income from shirts, sponsors and the popularity of Beckham. Personally, although i think United have done very well over the last 10-12 years - it is not a patch on what Liverpool achieved. I agree with the other guy who said that the difference betwen winning in the past and now is vast. One got a handshake whilst now its money money money. The Becks thing is like George Best - United are not really a football club - they are like the globetrotters of football - carnival club with loadsa money. Newcastle Pride - ay up

....on most points.Unfortunately living on past glories is all you have at the minute. If things had been the other way around your opinion would obviously be different.Man Utd have grasped and used what is available in modern football and Liverpool have failed to cash in properly on the marketing front, yes football is different.Life changes and you must go with the times.History is history, there is no future in it.

5 times, thats how to 'shut manchester united up'!
by jepo on June 05, 2008
united have always been bigger than liverpool, even when we didnt win the title for 28 years, we always had more support and respect than the scousers.my prediction for the coming season, liverpool to get rid of benitez, liverpool to finish fifth, and no new stadium for the scouse scum.what a year
by duke mcilroy on June 05, 2008
im from texas and a proud man u fan, liverpool have never won the premiership.for liverpool to say they have won 18 titles is ridiculous,as i say they,ve never..,won the prem.as an american soccer fan we only judge titles from the inception of the prem, just like we do with our superbowls.
.......bugger off back to your insipidly crap sports.Just cause America has no history stop trying to brainwash the rest of the world.Foolish nation.

It is a big misconception that MU spend the most money of all times, since if you put the inflation theory in effect. The way Chelsea is going, it would probably take another 5 years for them to be the top spender and still its a skewed view. When Blackburn won the league, the spent obscene sum of money, only for it never to be recognize a decade later because one transfer might actually equal their entire billing. When Liverpool was in the hunt in the 70s and 80s, I doubt the are thrifty like Arsenal and not look to money to actually get ahead. The only thing about money well spent is the amount of trophies you get and as the records wil tell you Liverpool is just one ahead, which is not a good thing, considering in 1992; it was 18-7!

My My My, Manc fans coming on here giving us abuse just because youve won a few titles. Real fans would argue that it comes in cycles, we had our major success in the 70s and 80s and like one fan said, you went 28 years without winning. Im not saying that as a Liverpool fan we should have to wait another ten years, but only one team can win the league. Whilst i dont agree with what Rafa does in the league, he is obviously more skilled and more knowledgeable than all of us put together hence why he is in the position of being LFC coach. Another reason for us not sustaining a charge is that the players we have are not that great right now. Next season, expect Lucas and Mascherano to be even more dominating in centre midfield, expect Babel to drive on and become the new John Barnes and well Torres is gonna score a shed load more goals. How many did Ronaldo score from open play? ALl of Torres goals were from open play so technically he is the better player. What everyone has to realise is that the PL is the most amazing, hardest, challenging league in the world to win. Why do you think so many coaches are turning down Chelsea job, because they know if they dont win anything they be sacked straight away. WHilst its common practice in Spain, it shouldnt become the norm over here. Uniteds generation of luck will end the moment SAF leaves old trafford. No coach in the world can do what he has done.
