The Football Association certainly know how to hit someone when they are down. Club in administration, relegation, whole future in jeopardy, ''I know,'' they think, ''let’s hit them with a ten-point deduction for next season because of the conduct of people no longer associated with the club. That would be fair.''
Luton Town are considering an appeal after being fined £50,000 and deducted 10 points for misconduct over payments to agents. The Leeds United saga developed into a farce with the appeal going on until the last week of the season, when it had become almost impossible for them to win the case. I’m sure it would do Luton’s chances no good at all if they appealed.
The FA have found the club guilty of paying agents via a third party, but not of paying bungs. The laws were broken in a flagrant manner and they have rightly been convicted. However, the club is under new ownership - those involved in the wrong doing have moved on. Former chairman Bill Tomlins has been banned from football for five years and fined £15,000, while three other ex-directors have also been punished and six agents warned.
The club's soon-to-be new owners, LTFC 2020, fully accepted that the behaviour of their predecessors was unacceptable. However, they were at a loss to understand why the FA had failed to recognise that the ownership and circumstances of the club had changed.
A statement released by the LTFC 2020 group read: "The FA is completely correct to show the football world that the type of behaviour demonstrated by the past management is totally unacceptable. We would like to reiterate that these findings related only to past directors of Luton Town FC and not to anyone related to, or part of LTFC2020. That decision makes no difference to our commitment to being the next custodians of the club.
‘‘The plans Mick Harford has for squad regeneration are completely unaffected. We are very disappointed the FA has not been able to take into account the current plight of the club and the fact it is soon to be under new ownership. To punish the club and the fans in the future with a points deduction, while the perpetrators get away with just light fines is hugely disappointing. The scale of the deduction is unbelievable when it is clear the people found guilty are no longer at the club. Who, exactly, do the FA think they are punishing?"
To me this seems like a perfectly fair and rational response. The question at the end of the statement is also a fair and rational one. The FA are using this case to flex their muscles and send a message to all clubs (the small ones, anyway) that they can’t get away with breaking the rules.
By punishing the new owners, the players and the fans, none of whom have done anything wrong, justice can hardly be said to have been done.
As a Watford supporter you might expect me to be pleased to see our old foes in such difficulties. However, being a football fan sometimes has to transcend club rivalries and you have to speak out about what is right and what is wrong. I may not like the club from 20 miles up the M1, but they are being treated very poorly indeed by the authorities. Not even Luton deserve that!
Fans of all clubs should let the FA know that this is a poor decision.

complete injustice, toothless punishment to the perpertrators (not spell checked) whose fines cannot be enforced, bulluing tactics to the new owners trying to clear up the previous mess. The FA are alienating themselves from ordinary fans

Weren't there potential recent wrongdoings by Premiership clubs and their employees, so serious that people were disturbed by police in the wee small hours. Names like Redknapp and Allardyce. Clubs including Birmingham, Newcastle, West Ham to name but three. All swept under the large carpet at Soho Square. No fines, no points deducted. Those responsible at Luton have already been uncovered by whistle blowers at the club itself and booted out, Yet the FA insists on a hefty fine and a crippling points deduction The FA is alienating itself from the majority of clubs in the country with this high handed attitude towards those in difficulty. As the bible says, "From he that hath not shall be taken away, even that which he hath".

Excellent piece Graham - thanks. What a shame no-one else in the nmational media seems bothered - all too busy pulling themselves off about the latest update on Chris Ronaldo or the never-ceasing excitiement of who Roman's latest puppet will be.

As a Luton Town supporter I would like to congratulate you on your well written article.Iam fully aware of the intense rivalry between our two clubs but there will be no rivalry if my club goes out of existence due to the disgraceful actions of the inept FA. This points deduction is a warning to everyone outside of the Prem that there are different rules for different leagues.West Ham being a good example here of double standards. No one at my club are saying there shouldn't be some form of punishment but it has to be proportionate and fair! The FA have yet again shown they are out of touch with the rest of the football family and are only concerned with the top four of English football ! My club have fantastic supporters who have risen to each challenge thrown at us.I will not bore you with those challenges but with out doubt this latest one will be meet head on in an intelligent manner and we will survive. I look forward intensely to renewing our rivalry in the not distant future, for this is what football is about not points deductions!

Typical FA! Again the fans are kicked in the nuts and those who caused the mess are unaffected. This is just the start as tThe Football League may well be having their 15 points shortly which will condemn you to the conference. Despite the unfairness of what happened to Leeds last season I really hope for the sake of football that this situation is sorted out and it doesn't happen to another club again. i.e. Luton or Bournemouth.

Once again the FA show what a bunch of idots they are who care nothing for the teams in the lower leagues of the English Tier. Pathetic decision which would never of been endorsed if Luton were a Premiership Club. Its about time they realised that teams like Luton are the clubs which produce young English Talent which the so called bigger clubs poach and without them and the rest of the lower leagues the future of the English game would suffer more than it is now. Its about time the FA scrapped it's double standards and started treating all clubs in the country with equal respect

Nicely put, good to see as a Luton supporter that others (including Watford fans haha) see what the FA have done is unjust, I would like like an answer from the FA, why didnt they act when first called into the club from staff at Luton over two years ago? what more could the club have done, our own staff called the FA in to look at financial situation, all the individuals who have been fined are no longer at the club! I hope an appeal is undertaken, specially considering the further Football League 15 point penalty due next week for exiting administration without the proper cva!!!

Could not agree more. Excellent article! The FA should make equal & fair decisions to all football clubs based on a level playing field. How can West Ham flout the rules and not have points deducted but Luton do? If Luton have to have 15 points deducted because they come out of administration in the same manner as Leeds then so be it if they have 15 points deducted (as Leeds did), but surely they should not have ten deducted because of previous financial impropriety at the club! (especially as the club brought the matter to the attention of the FA in the first place and all people guilty of flouting the rules have since left the club)

Yet again the FA have shown they are a million miles away from knowing what the ordinary football fan wants.Luton Have been penalised for a misdemeanor by the previous regime, that has nothing to do with the present takeover bid.

Thanks Graham, good article, nail on head stuff. Having been a season ticket holder in all four divisions, I'll be supporting the Town even if we go non-league as a result of the authorities double standards. You'd hope that a reasonable man like Trevor Brooking might be able to influence the FA, especially as he'll be well aware of the West Ham judgement a season or so back. In the meantime, thanks again Graham. Wouldn't go as far as wishing you all the best - but I hope it won't be too long before the rip-roaring Hatters are able to give the hapless Horns an overdue derby day beating.
