The number of Football players in the Premier League available for England selection often comes under scrutiny when the national side has suffered a heavy loss.

Critics claim that the presence of so many foreign players is destroying English football. With a lower percentage of players England-qualified, it is easy to say that it is lack of choice that has undone many an international campaign. But is it really?

The Premier League has attracted some of the best players in the world and quality is high, meaning the England-qualified players that do play are pushed and challenged to the same high quality.

‘If clubs are forced to play a certain number of English players, particularly if that number is high, the quality of football may drop and that is something that should be avoided’

If clubs are forced to play a certain number of English players, particularly if that number is high, the quality of football may drop and that is something that should be avoided if the FA really wants to improve English football.

Of course, you could argue that the players who would be introduced under such a scheme would gain match experience at a higher level in order to improve enough to have made the team originally – it is just the opportunities that are needed. But is it really fair to select someone because of their nationality, English or not?

More English players in the league would be a positive thing for the national side, but clubs being forced to play them is not the answer. Footballers should be chosen on talent, not nationality and any scheme to include more English players would have to work from the ground up.

Working with youth teams and scouting English talent at younger ages as well as providing a good coaching network and feeder system for the Premier League clubs could see more English players being good enough to play at the top level, not being picked for anything other than talent.

The idea of more English talent in the Premier League is a good one, but the idea of forcing clubs to include a certain number of English players, even if they are sub-standard, could cause far too many problems.

The Premier League is a great league, popular with both fans and players. Giving foreign talent the boot to incorporate English professionals will only be a good thing if the English talent can be as good as that it has replaced. Putting someone in a team because of their country of origin if they are not good enough is not fair on club or player.

More English players in the Premier League would be a good thing, but they need to be able to win their spots, not be handed them by new rulings.
