I think the Premier League is rapidly changing. Teams are undoubtedly improving the standards of squad personnel every year and in recent years Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea have added real quality. But this is also now the case with teams like Tottenham, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Everton. Pundits and critics keep commenting on how hard it will be to break into the top four but I honestly feel that the four teams mentioned above can all take quite a few points off the Big Four next season.Any one of this quartet can break the elite four, and I guarantee that Spurs, Villa, City and Everton will be a lot closer to Liverpool and Arsenal then Liverpool and Arsenal will be to the title. Let’s take a closer look at the clubs in danger, and the up-and-coming heavyweights:'I guarantee that Spurs, Villa, City and Everton will be a lot closer to Liverpool and Arsenal then Liverpool and Arsenal will be to the title'ARSENAL: Were unfairly written off last year but they used this to their advantage by playing a beautiful brand of football and getting results. But as the pressure and expectancy crept in, they stumbled. With midfielder Mathieu Flamini already departed and Aleksandr Hleb heading for the exit, how will the new midfield gel? Surely this pressure will be much more evident at the start of next season and it will be interesting to see how Arsenal respond.LIVERPOOL: Rafa Benitez has spent vast amounts in the last three years without any improvements. Liverpool seem to be the weakest of the top four. There are huge question marks over the running of the club and how will this affect the team on the field. So where does that leave the chasing pack?TOTTENHAM: Here we might find the front runners if that fourth spot is to be picked off. There is no denying the currant squad is better than the other three challengers on paper. Also in Juande Ramos they have a manager who has already transformed one mid-table club into the Champions League material with Sevilla. With signings like Luka Modric and Dos Santos and more expected to follow, the improvements are there for all to see. However let’s not forget this IS Tottenham we’re talking about!MANCHESTER CITY: A very good team! Why they slipped away last season is beyond me, but with Mark Hughes now in the hot seat perhaps they can take the leap of faith. They have players like Elano, Micah Richards, Petrov and the prospect of Brazilians Jo and Ronaldhino joining them. This could be a pacey, attacking team very capable of a few shocks, as they showed last season when completing the double over the eventual champions.

I do enjoy this site, for pure comedy value. Liverpool have shown no improvement in the past 3 years despite 'vast' amounts? Spent less than Spurs actually. To the author, how about you put your money where your mouth is eh? If Liverpool and Arsenal finish in the top 4, you give £50 to charity. No? Thought not. Little ratbag.

I think you will find spurs finished 37 points behind arsenal last year, and certainly need more than modric (though he is good) and the very unproven dos santos to get near us. I reckon man city are the only club with a genuine chance of breaking the top 4 in the next few years- unlimited spending power and a great manager- Liverpool will be the club to drop out unless they sack benitez who is clueless domestically.

I think it will have to be a team effort from the 4 chasing teams. If they can each eat away at Arsenal and Liverpools points by stealing enough draws and wins against them then it could leave the back door open for one of the teams to take the initiative and sneak in to fourth

you're talking rubbish, Liverpool & Arsenal have a settled team, the players has now has years experience playing in the premiership, where as Tottenham & the rest would need time for there players to get use to the premiership.

Good article... who knows.. As the premier league is becoming flodded with quality, that quality ultimately has to filter down to other teams, if the Prem remains the place to be for players over the next few years it will become easier for the chasing teams to tempt talented players from the lesser leagues... as well as the fact the the chasing teams are nearly as rich as the champs league teams from other leagues meaning we can compete on wages as well as the initial transfer fee. Just waiting for all the really intelligent comments your gonna get from arsenal fans about how no one in the world could ever over take them, they are the best team in the world.... blah blah blah

Next Season the top 4 will be the same, not seen enough from those below to worry me. As for the comment that LFC are the weakest of the 4, the gunners couldn't beat them in the League and lost out in the Champs League. Chelsea were lucky to get a draw at Anfield and failed to beat us in the league. As for all the teams you mentioned the best they could get Vs LFC was a draw. So where's this big change going to come from????

Another extremely poorly researched article from Sportingo. You seem to have ignored the fact that Sevilla were a pretty good team with some very good players BEFORE Ramos and that Del Nido is really the man behind their success. You also talk up Everton who are the most over-rated team in the Premier League for me. And will Elano et al really want to play Mark Hughes-style kick anything that moves football? The biggest factor over the coming years will be the world financial situation and Ferguson moving out of Man Utd, Things are going to change, big time and the only team to benefit will be Chelsea unless Platini has his way and financial doping becomes a thing of the past. Then you will see quality shine through. Just a little more depth in such articles would be appreciated. After all this article could have been written during any June for the past 5 years.

Mmmmm., as a Spurs fan I would like to find your thesis attractive: I, for one, actually did tip the Gooners to do well at the start of last season, and it should be noted that they dropped away while Eduardo and Van Persie were both injured - how would United have coped without, say, Tevez and Rooney (okay, we know, Saha was already injured); or Chelsea without Anelka and Drogba (imagine that, Pizarro and Shevchenko as a front pairing); or, heaven forbid, Spurs without, say, Berbatov and Keane. Not exact parallels, but I hope you get my point. The reason Flamini went was because Wenger slipped-up. he wasn't expecting Falmini to 'come-on' quite so much and so didn't offer him a contract last year. Gilberto was seen as first choice holding midfielder. He was injured. Flamini got a game, and the rest, as they say, is history. But Gilberto is still there, Fabregas is there, Hleb may be going but Rosicky will be coming back from a lengthy injurt and he is quite a player (let's be honest). And Wenger is always uncovering talent. On Liverpool, I feel it could go either way. A couple more purchases and, if they come out of the traps fast they could surprise everyone. As for the contenders: I would agree that Spurs are best placed to profit from any slip-ups; but Citeh have got one of the best young British managers and did do the double over United last year - and we can expect them to be very evident and ambitious in the transfer market. Everton, I worry about them reaching a glass season without a large cash injection, even though I rate Moyes. Villa, they have O'Neill, a seemingly level headed owner and some fine young players. But O'Neill hasn't went mad in the transfer market - he is building a team and it may take a few more seasons before the fruits of that are evident (especially if they lose Barry). Yes, Liverpool look most vulnerable. Yes, anyone of the teams mentioned could take points off the Big Four - but they will also take points off one another. It could happen but it's difficult to call - but it should be hotly contested next year. COYS

Still laughing and rolling around the floor at the idea that any of the 'pretenders' will get near a top 4 finish. If they do it is as liekly to be Chelski dropping down than anyone. They just aint a team, more a collection of names. They rely on boring their opponents to death.
by mark on June 10, 2008
liverpool are by far the worst team in the top 4 and are also the most boring to watch,. I think spurs will take there champions league place next season.
Everton - haven't got big enough squad as proved this season. Villa - it looks like they're loosing their best player. Man City - will start well like this season but tail off usless the Thai owner does spend some real money and does get Goofy. Spurs - they could even be bothered to put on a performance for their fans on the last day of the Season - No heart. So as I said earlier top 4 to remain top 4 although not in the order they finish this season. Mark the Spurs fan please read my previous comments about LFC.

I'm a Spurs fan, I'm not gonna bother rattling off the enormous list of potential starts within our ranks these days but I will say this, we have more than 20 players who are either already full internationals, or are going to be, all aged under 23.Added to these names, people like Hutton, Woodgate, King, Keane and Berbatov, we are in a superb position to be challengers to the top 2-4 clubs in the next 3 years, not next year though although our squad is much better than Villa and Everton and if anyone denies that Ramos is an absolutely quality manager, right up there with the best, then they need their heads examined. What more do you need? we have supporters who actually sing (take note Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Yoo) a board who are prepared to pay money out of their own pocket to finance the club, and a superb team who look after our accounts. The potential is absolutely enormous, the sky is the limit. I know I'm gonna get pelters from Gooners here but if you think than that Bale, Hutton, Woodgate, Modric, Dos Santos, Keane and Berbatov are not as good as the likes of Clichy, Sagna, Van Persie, Adebeyor and Denilson, you're mad, all you really have over us in terms of quality is Fabregas and I think Modric my turn out to be a rather good player
by Chris Bullard on June 10, 2008
I have to be honest... I am not over excited about these signings....funny enough I think Bostock could be the key signing for the future. As for us breaking the top Four. If ( or shud I say When) we lose Berba where we are not going to replace him with another of his calibre and why not give bent a chance. He might save us 20 million or so. No Champs League which means no top class striker will want to come to us so we will just have to battle on with what we have which is capable of doing that. So until we finish top four we cannot exspect anyone tio join us from the elite playwers league. Afterall its where the money is and challenge they desire. I do also think Arsenal will struggle to replace both Hleb and Flamini . Ya Ya Tour is not good enough either so they can have him.

Arsene Wenger is a clown
by peter on June 10, 2008
Its good that people still don't rate Everton, We get mocked and knocked and told we are over achieving, yet year on year we are improving. A few years ago when we did finish 4th we probably were overachieving. Next time I think we will be there or there abouts for a few years!!
by Stuart Mitchell on June 10, 2008
I agree that Everton get told we are overachieving every year, but yet we still dominate all the teams outside the sky 4. With some good buys this summers, expect Everton to overtake the wobbling Liverpool and Shakey Arsenal!
by daboy on June 10, 2008
When you look at the mess Houllier left and the sales of players Benitez has had minused from his outlay he has done well. Funny when you say Tottenham could easily make the ground on liverpool next season but obviously dont expect Liverpool could make that ground on man united.
by Jim on June 10, 2008
don't know why I am commenting because every artical I have ever read on this site is total shite but the suggestion that Rafa has spent millions and Liverpool have not improved is garbage, look at the team from 3 years ago and now and you will see an obvious improvement. With regard to if anyone will drop out of top 4 suppose its Arsen
