The summer transfer window is taking on a life of its own. Through a combination of higher transfer fees, a media gagging to fill column inches and the fact that the English Premier League is the richest and strongest in the world, football fans are being fed a diet of quotes, fanciful rumours and “transfer gossip” on a scale unseen before.

For Spurs fans this has already been an eventful summer and judging by the circumstances surrounding the club, there are sure to be plenty more twists and turns before September 1.

Tottenham’s poor league form last season and the new management broom initiated by Juande Ramos meant this was always going to be a busy time. Throw in the fact that Dimitar Berbatov is almost certainly leaving and Damien Comolli is working for his future and it is no surprise that many of the rumours around the north London club are believable. (Incidentally, how has Comolli not been sacked for spending huge amounts of money on Younes Kaboul, Darren Bent and Kevin Prince-Boateng last summer?)

‘The amusing part of much of this negativity is that when looking at the cold hard facts, Tottenham seem to be in a great position at this point of the transfer window’

So, in the latest instalment of supposed quotes and rumours, Spurs fans received a number of stark messages from the great and the unproven in world football. After being linked with the club for a number of weeks, Samuel Eto’o has dismissed any chance that he will play for Spurs next season. The Cameroonian striker said: "Tottenham, and I hope the English fans will forgive me, are a club in mid-table and I need more.

It would have been a massive surprise if Eto’o had joined Spurs – almost as fantastic as Ronaldinho joining Manchester City!

Meanwhile, Arsenal whizzkid Carlos Vela couldn't resist a dig at the Gunners' rivals when welcoming fellow Mexican and Barcelona midfielder Giovanni Dos Santos to north London – "I am happy for him. I hope things go well for him at Tottenham,” said Vela. “He is a very good player and let's hope he can then move on to a better team." Ouch.

Vela’s comments can be dismissed as some friendly banter, but this is not the only “Spurs bashing” in the papers. PSV striker Jefferson Farfan, who played a big part in the elimination of Tottenham from the UEFA Cup last season, claims he rejected a move to White Hart Lane because he preferred signing for German side Schalke instead. This comes hot on the heels of a statement from Portsmouth claiming they will not sell Lassana Diarra to Spurs.

The amusing part of much of this negativity is that when looking at the cold hard facts, Tottenham seem to be in a great position at this point of the transfer window. The signings of Croatian playmaker Luca Modric, Dos Santos and Palace's teenage sensation John Bostock are all coups in their own right.

The arrival of three attacking creative midfielders, two of whom are likely to start, says much about Juande Ramos’ thinking. For a while now Spurs have relied on their strikers or Aaron Lennon for inspiration. Modric and Dos Santos should add the class and guile to unlock tight defences. In the modern game, with space at a premium, it is players with a low centre of gravity like Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas who can make a difference. The signings so far suggest Ramos is intent on installing this nous into his Spurs side.

All eyes were on Modric during Croatia’s encounter with Austria at Euro 2008, John Ley in the Daily Telegraph was impressed with the Johan Cruyff lookalike: “He finished the game further forward, playing just behind striker Igor Budan, offering Spurs manager Juande Ramos an insight into his ability to switch positions, something the Spaniard likes in a player. The future for Croatia may be promising; the future for Spurs could be fascinating.”

Tottenham have signalled their intentions for next season by splashing out on three of the most promising young players in world football. If they make any more signings of this ilk in the coming weeks, they will be aiming high next season, whatever the doomsayers (Eto’o, Vela and Farfan) may claim.
