The summer transfer window is taking on a life of its own. Through a combination of higher transfer fees, a media gagging to fill column inches and the fact that the English Premier League is the richest and strongest in the world, football fans are being fed a diet of quotes, fanciful rumours and “transfer gossip” on a scale unseen before. For Spurs fans this has already been an eventful summer and judging by the circumstances surrounding the club, there are sure to be plenty more twists and turns before September 1.Tottenham’s poor league form last season and the new management broom initiated by Juande Ramos meant this was always going to be a busy time. Throw in the fact that Dimitar Berbatov is almost certainly leaving and Damien Comolli is working for his future and it is no surprise that many of the rumours around the north London club are believable. (Incidentally, how has Comolli not been sacked for spending huge amounts of money on Younes Kaboul, Darren Bent and Kevin Prince-Boateng last summer?)‘The amusing part of much of this negativity is that when looking at the cold hard facts, Tottenham seem to be in a great position at this point of the transfer window’So, in the latest instalment of supposed quotes and rumours, Spurs fans received a number of stark messages from the great and the unproven in world football. After being linked with the club for a number of weeks, Samuel Eto’o has dismissed any chance that he will play for Spurs next season. The Cameroonian striker said: "Tottenham, and I hope the English fans will forgive me, are a club in mid-table and I need more.It would have been a massive surprise if Eto’o had joined Spurs – almost as fantastic as Ronaldinho joining Manchester City!Meanwhile, Arsenal whizzkid Carlos Vela couldn't resist a dig at the Gunners' rivals when welcoming fellow Mexican and Barcelona midfielder Giovanni Dos Santos to north London – "I am happy for him. I hope things go well for him at Tottenham,” said Vela. “He is a very good player and let's hope he can then move on to a better team." Ouch.

test message

Last year we thought we were also in a great position and we flopped badly. Unfortunately I'm more of a pesimist than an optimist. I hope you're right though!
by Clock End Gooner on June 11, 2008
Yep... Spurs really mean business this summer (in the Toyta Malaysia Tournament)... When will the silly little flids realise... they ain't a big club! They haven't been since the 60's, and they probably never will be again! Just deal with it!

If the Premiership was contested during the transfer window then Spurs would have won it every season. Unfortunately for them it's what follows that counts, and they have always come up well short. Top 6 is still an aspiration. Mid-table the reality.

Very suprising but I think sportingo have finally published an article with facts and well balanced opinions. keep it up
by jeeefffo the one on June 11, 2008
I am a realist , not a pessimist or an optimist. Last year we knew we had over spent on average players. This year , we have not.
by Galway Gooner on June 11, 2008
Sorry havent we heard this all before (like summer 07, 06, 05 etc). Moderic looks ok nothing more, he struggled to impose himself against the mightly Austrians. De Santos has been sold having done pretty much nothing for Barca. Do you think they would be so willing to sell him if he was "world class". John Bostock?? Come on, if Spurs success this season depends on some kid from Palace doing it on the big stage they will be in serious trouble. Yet another biased and useless piece from Sportingo, your consistently low standards is very impressive.

I completely agree - a few more players like this and Spurs will be ready for an assult on the top half of the table - watchout West Ham!
by dan on June 11, 2008
articles like this make me laugh, spurs fans are so deluded...
by Jim B on June 11, 2008
Hahaha! Typical gooner and chelski responses. This is actually a well reasoned article. Far better than usually appears on this sort of site. Yes, it is ridiculous that so much is made of (in all probability) innocent quotes taken out of context and / or agent driven gossip. It is even more ridiculous to beat Spurs, of all teams, with the transfer failure stick. Because (Chelsea's useful signing of Bosingwa aside) Spurs are the only club that has done anything of note in the transfer market thus far. Modric may only have been the best of an average bunch when Croatia beat Austria. But he was outstanding when Croatia dismantled England. I have no worries about his ability to shine on the Premier League stage. Just one quibble with the author, though. Darren Bent and Younes Kaboul were not bad signings. Bent hardly got a chance in the starting line up but he is a good striker and will come good. Kaboul has all the qualities (strength, speed, ability on the ball) but he is very young and lacks experience. He will eventually learn to iron out his lapses in concentration and he will become a very good centre back. So Comolli shouldn't be criticized for signing these players. He should only be criticized for the transfer fees that he agreed to pay. Far too much in both cases.
every year spurs fans boast about how they are going to gatecrash the top 4 with their super summer signings and every year they are left with shit on their face. put simply, spurs are a bottom half side whose only claim to fame are beating arsenal reserves 5-1, and spending huge amounts of money on hugely average players. i would praise spurs fans unrivaled optimism but i think it has now crossed over into deep delusion.
by laughing at spurs on June 11, 2008
if titles, champions league, and cups were decided on the wishful thinking and unrealistic boasting by fans, Spurs would do the treble every year. Not in the history of football has there been a club which has succeeded so little, but has so much to say. Even players like Jermaine Genius get on in the act with a 'we must finish ahead of Arsenal to be succesful'. It's nice that you aspire to us, but in reality, with your little stadium and delusional fanbase, you got about as much chance of challanging for a serious trophy as I have at winning the national lottery.
by jock b on June 11, 2008
lol what did spuds spend last summer £40-45m and Jenas said top four finish.. you couldnt even finish in the top half..... One-Day Ramos took over and won less than 33% of his league games. Yet still your gonna get into top 4 next season.... Get real
by Laughing at Spurs on June 11, 2008
Is that the same Sylvan Wiltord who scored up at Old Trafford to bring the League Title back to London ? Something you haven't managed since 1961, indeed something you haven't even challanged for since then. He cost the same as Sergei Rebrov. Pound for pound Spurts have outspent Arsenal MASSIVELY over the last 5 years and you are STILL behind us. I can't smile without you ;-)

I see that all the arsenal kids have come out to play, bless 'em - still trotting out the tired, old line that they played their reserves in the 5-1 thrashing handed to them by Spurs. One day, if they keep telling themselves that it was only their reserves, they might even believe it. But, though I realise that it's difficult for attention deficit syndrome arsenal kids to stick to the point of any discussion instead of randomly boasting about some historical trophy that they won way back in the distant, three year old past, let's get back to the original discussion. At no point does the article make any bold claims about what Spurs will or won't achieve next season. Pity that you kids lack the basic comprehension to have grasped that fact. Never mind, eh, gooners? Bless your little cotton, socks.

there seems to be a lot of idiots on here with there own delusions! gatecrashing the top 4 was something spurs missed out on 2 years running .fact.And after a period of change owing to a poor start last year led them to under achieve with there player set this will be a big year now to see if the new man ramos and his choices of players bring them back on track. i personally think newcastle are in a similar vein with lots of potential to knock the likes of arsenal back in the division as they consistently under achieve. spurs last year although up and down like a yo-yo deserved there success in the carling cup in beating teams above them- arsenal reserves my ####!! they were good enough to beat liverpool etc and why... suprise factor/talent. even paul merson reflected spurs are a good side!! when spurs outplayed them, and in those games ramos played a great strategy that paid off- wasnt as one sided against chelsea but deserved . spurs then took foot off pedal and it showed.. think most people with any intelligence will not resort to the bad mouthers out there and merely discount there views as trash talk- it says more about you than your views people!! keep up the valid points guys i reckon spurs will be top 6 this next season if they remain consistent.

Here goes an unbiased post from a spurs fan.. last years signings were bigged up and failed but none of them had even consistently played for the national teams!! Modric - did not play fantastically the other day but there was enough there to show that he is a wondefully balanced .. two footed footballer with a great engine with an eye for a pass.. what else is required of a midfielder?? The boy ran the midefiled against the gerrards n lampards who are lauded in the premier league!! Dos Santos - has so much ability its unreal and hes only 19 .. all this talk of barca letting him go .. they did the same with fabregas, queresma and they also released a player by the name of MARADONNA after just one season!! Bostock - not ready to start obviously but with arsenal and barca sending him signed shirts etc and courtin him hard shows that he will be fantastic in the years to come!! im not gettin carried away this summer after the anti climax of last season.. but with a few more good quality signings maybe we can push on and improve.. champz league is still a bridge to far atm unless we bring in 4 more players of outstanding ability!! none the less i cannot wait for next season to begin.. COYS arsene wanger tht coment you posted.. is sick and twisted.. frankly your obviously a pathetic sadcase to come out with somethin like tht!!
tbh i`m a arsenal fan and the comments about bill nicks grave is disgusting.. You have made yourself look a complete prat saying such terrible thing. Spurs won the carling cup because they wanted it more than us and chelski.. fair play dont have any complaints about it and dont agree with some afc fans excuses. altho I would have more respect for spurs fans if they stopped comparing themselves to us. you arent as successful and your team is good but no where near as good as arsenal. Can i ask one serious question...... dos Santos does look very good .. But why would Barca let one of their most upcoming stars leave for £4m rising to £8.5 m
by Berbisoff on June 11, 2008
That was the most disgusting comment I have ever read. You must be from a very ugly background. I don't even think an apology could erase that. Jock b. I read your comment. Why do all Arsenal fans always think that Spurs fans are trying to compare themselves to you. Yes we do play good football, and I believe that we are entitled to aspire to making it to the top four. I think we were the second highest scoring team in the league last season, which says a lot. If we sort our defense out, do you honestly that we don't stand a chance of hitting our target.
Dos Santos came so cheap because he didn't have long remaining on his contract and he had made it quite clear that he wanted to leave and wasn't going to sign a new contract with Barca unless he got more of a chance with the first team. And it was equally clear that, with Messi, Henry, Eto'o and Bojan already ahead of him, Dos Santos wasn't going to get any more of a chance than he did last season. So Barca had no choice but to let him go.
i dont even see why arsenal
