"It's fair to say that the communication between the Hicks and the Gilletts has been substantially improved and I believe that it will be for the benefit of the club."

Is that music to the ears of the Liverpool fans coming from the lips of George Gillett himself? One would hope so for the sake of this illustrious, proud and successful club.

This was Gillett speaking on Canadian radio station Fan590 last night. With many comings and goings occurring at Anfield on the player front during the summer it is essential for Liverpool to show unity from top to bottom.

Last season's troubles were an embarrassment for everyone concerned. The positives are that Liverpool are actually moving in the right direction and if clarity instead of grey clouds can bring everyone together then a sustained challenge can be made to what really counts more than anything else in the North-West of England right now - the Premier League title.

The Champions League is what it is all about now. A tournament for the mega-rich clubs in Europe. It is fantastic to watch but it can no longer be considered as a tournament specifically for the Champions of each European League. That's a fact, and the prize of the Premier League holds more prestige and value to Liverpool fans right now.

It is simply unacceptable for a club like Liverpool to have gone 18 years without winning "the big one." I'm sure there will be ridiculous shouts about Liverpool winning their 19th title coinciding with the possible 19th year without winning it. Silly really.

Rafael Benitez must be allowed to continue his steady progress. Okay, he has spent vast sums of money and they are still  inconsistent in the league. This must be remedied. All too often the fans have had to admit that the league is over. The new generation of Liverpool fans do not grasp what an institution Liverpool is.

That's modern football. It's the same at Manchester United and Arsenal. I see comments on this website from people who seem to be more interested in how much money is going to be spent and so on. It's ridiculous, quite frankly. The ordinary fan is being pushed to one side by others who do not have a clue what they are talking about. It's a shame.

It's really quite simple what Liverpool have to do to win the League. Find someone who can play alongside Steven Gerrard in midfield (Gareth Barry?), a couple of wingers who can put in decent deliveries and stay injury free. Oh, a bit of consistency and no unnecessary rotational work would help. Simple? Not so.

Liverpool don't have too much money to spend and shelling out a proposed £40m for David Villa will mean no other signings whatsoever. It's going to be very interesting and I hope they get their act together not just for themselves but to also prevent the Premier League title chase becoming another boring two-horse race.
