Arguably the last shock deal seen in English football was the transfer of Andy Cole to Manchester United in January 1995. The Newcastle hitman moved to Old Trafford and such was the shock of the announcement that Kevin Keegan had to reassure fans of the Toon army on the steps of St James’ Park.
Nowadays it would be a huge shock to hear of a transfer no-one knew was coming. The vast swathes of football websites on the Internet mean that even if there is an unexpected move, one site or another is likely to have predicted it.
The transfers below will all happen; quite simply, there is too much smoke for there not to be a fire and it is more than likely that they will set off a merry-go-round that will see the most money spent during a summer transfer window ever.
Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid: For weeks Manchester United fans have been wondering why their Portuguese No.7 has not come out and confirmed his intention to stay at Old Trafford. Ronaldo has had enough of Manchester and after winning every possible trophy with the Red Devils it is quite easy to see why he will make his dream move to the Bernabeu.
Gareth Barry to Liverpool: After a fine season at Villa, Barry has intimated he wants to play Champions League football. Liverpool’s financial resources have been speculated upon but the only certainty is that they will haggle for every deal they make this summer with their American owners not flashing the cash due to their doubts about their own partnership and the building of a new stadium.
Likely repercussions: A central midfield defensive duo of Barry and Javier Mascherano will be difficult to break down. It is questionable how much of an improvement the Aston Villa midfielder is on Xabi Alonso. As it is, the Spaniard appears to be on his way to Juventus to join up with another Liverpool old boy, Mohammed Sissoko.
Samir Nasri to Arsenal: The move of the “next Zidane” to the Emirates Stadium appears to have been in the offing almost as long as the Ronaldo transfer saga. The French winger didn’t get much playing time during Euro 2008 and he should fit in well at the Arsenal.
Likely repercussions: The outgoings from Arsenal this summer have been fairly incredible for a club that usually seems very stable in a football sense. With Mathieu Flamini gone, Aleksandr Hleb and Emmanuel Adebayor perhaps also leaving, we could see a much-changed Gunners side next season. Expect Nasri to be far more effective than Hleb – although in truth that shouldn’t be too difficult for the nearly former Marseille midfielder.

Not very good this. Only Nasri is a definite at this point. And what about last year, I don't think anyone predicted Manchester United buying Anderson, that came out of the blue.

Agree with above poster... Not the best of articles, Ronaldo and Barry are very likely and Nasri will definitely happen. But the whole "transfers never happen out of the blue anymore" thing is almost completely untrue... - No one expected Modric to sign for Spurs - Eduardo's transfer to Arsenal was completely out of the blue, with everyone's attention on Ribery, Robinho et al. - Tevez and Mascherano's move to West Ham? Show me anyone who was expecting that (apart from insiders obviously) and i'll show you a winged pig. - Also as has been mentioned, Utd's capture of Nani and Anderson was relatively out of the blue, considering the high profile nature of the deal anyway.

don't be a Muppet,he's going nowhere. Just because the Daily Splash from London says it's true doesn't make it so. Where's all the headlines about Drogba, Lampard and Adebayor (to name but three) going? Ans = it doesn't sell papers because they are not Manchester United So when the season gets underway and we and Ronaldo are still bangin em in, remember who told you not to believe silly journalists.

this article is pretty poorly researched, apart from what O P and jimmy connon have said above the repercussions for each team and very poorly written, for example the loss of ronaldo will make utd play in a different style... how? your hardly showing your knowledge there are ya? and for liverpool "A central midfield defensive duo of Barry and Javier Mascherano will be difficult to break down." really wow, thats it what an analysis that is mate, and for arsenal "Expect Nasri to be far more effective than Hleb – although in truth that shouldn’t be too difficult for the nearly former Marseille midfielder." hleb was one of arsenals best players last season thats why he is coverted by the likes of barca, what a ridiculous statement that is...

Rupert, as much as you refuse to believe it, the likelihood is that Ronaldo will go. There's just too much smoke without fire on this one and the way he's been behaving and the stuff he has been saying doesn't point to him staying. Every time he plays in a major tournament he seemingly has his head turned, and last time it happened you guys got away with it, but I just can't see it going any other way than him leaving now. He needs to play in Spain now, just to accommodate his massive ego and demand for wealth, so you may as well as take the money for him and be done with it. As we've seen in the EPL so many times, if a player wants to leave then he'll end up going one way or another. From a purely selfish view, I can't wait to see the back of him...
