Why does Arsene Wenger go to the European Championship with his cheque book and then proclaim that everyone is too expensive to be purchased? Is there truth in his words or is it just a smoke screen so that our targets are not detected by other clubs?

Well, no one knows except Arsene. However, I am going to add my two cents worth of who we should be purchasing from this exciting tournament so far.

Top of my list will be David Villa from Spain. I estimate that he would cost us £14million. The reasons? Simple. He was the top scorer of Euro 2008 and is an established finisher. He has publicly declared his love for Arsenal and our passing game. His unselfish play shone brightly in the tournament and if we don’t buy him, we better pray super hard that Liverpool don’t snap him up and pair him with Fernando Torres. That will be quite an impressive strike force which we do not want the Anfield men to have. Need I say more?

Number two on the list is Denis Kolodin, a 26-year-old Russian who plays in the heart of defence. He packs a shot like a thunderbolt and has bags of energy to run round the whole pitch. When he shoots, it is better to be behind the wall than to front up to his bullets face-on. In fact, as he has also played as a striker and midfielder, it can be safely said that he is a complete player trained in all departments. As a back-up and eventual replacement for William Gallas, I believe this guy is almost there. Best part? He would probably cost us £3million at most.

Next player will be Orlando Engelaar. The Dutchman is 6ft 6in tall and has a towering and commanding presence in midfield. Previously a striker, he is now a defensive midfielder protecting the defence - that is, a replacement for Mathieu Flamini. With his aerial and passing abilities, he is definitely an asset during set pieces and attacks. His greatest quality is largely considered to be his through pass because, despite his size, he does have an eye for an opening. Orlando is captain of FC Twente at the moment and I figure he won’t cost us more than £3million. At 28, he would be a much better choice than Marco Senna.

Last but not least, we need an experienced goalkeeper to plug the hole left by the aging Jens Lehmann. Eccentric man he may be, Lehmann did have many moments of brilliance and was part of the Invincibles that went through a season unbeaten. With the German gone, the reliable Manuel Almunia is too comfortable and will not be challenged by youngsters Lukasz Fabianski or Vito Mannone or Wojciech Szczesny.

What do you think of Igor Akinfeyev - the outstanding keeper from Russia? He broke into the CSKA starting line-up at the age of 17, and has been first-choice goalkeeper at the club ever since, gathering various honours including a UEFA Cup, two national championships and the ‘Zvezda’ trophy. At only 22, he kept his No.1 place in the Russian team under Gus Hiddink in this European Championship. Probable cost - £5million.

How do we do the sums for Le Boss, then? It all adds up beautifully to a round £25million! Do we have the money? I certainly believe so! If we don’t, we do have an ace up our sleeve. The name is Emmanuel Ade-‘bye’- or.  Big Ade has been blowing hot and cold about wanting to play for the Gunners. If he is so undecided on being part of the most promising squad in the world, he can jolly well packs his bags and go!

At Arsenal, no player is bigger than the team and Ade is no Thierry Henry or Cesc Fabregas, to say the least. Make up your mind, big guy. We want you to stay but if you don’t want to, we would be happy to collect the £25million to get our new players.

There you have it, Le Boss. A win- win situation that will lead us to the promised land.

Go Gunners!
