As the week ends, we have a sense of deja vu. Cristiano Ronaldo's agent says he's made a deal with Real Madrid, Manchester United claim Ronaldo isn't for sale.

The next ongoing news item is Martin O'Neill rejecting the latest offer from Liverpool for midfielder Gareth Barry, rumoured to be in the region of £15m rising to £17m based on appearances and the Merseysiders' league position next season.

Since the first issue has been discussed to death, I will focus on the other major tug-of-war going on. This has been a strange story as most Liverpool fans would prefer to see Xabi Alonso staying at Anfield rather than buying Barry, whilst Rafa Benitez and O'Neill are at loggerheads.

Gareth Barry has been an Aston Villa player for the last decade or so and is one of their great servants. However, it's only in the last two years that his performances have taken the eye. This is because of O'Neill's decision to play him more centrally in midfield rather than on the left.

A lot of people are ready to brand Barry a traitor because they feel O'Neill is responsible for turning around his career. But has the manager really done enough to convince the player that his future is at Villa Park? Barry believes he hasn't, and there seem to be conflicting stories as to whether Villa have actually offered the player an improved contract, which seems to be the central issue here.

O'Neill rubbishes all the claims that he hasn't done anything to keep the player at Villa Park. But the truth seems to be that he has done nothing. The Villa boss is quickly losing my respect over this saga. He has portrayed himself to the fans as having done everything possible to satisfy Barry's demands, when in reality he's done nothing. He's just holding out for a bigger offer from Liverpool.

This could even backfire on O'Neill, and I feel he's already made a huge mistake by not accepting the latest bid from Anfield. If this is indeed the last offer from Liverpool then we can expect a transfer request from Barry.

Even if he doesn't go to Liverpool, is it in Villa's interests to keep a player desperate to join another club? More so, why would that player be the captain? Liverpool would be foolish to increase their offer, especially as Barry is so keen to leave Villa. Liverpool fans might feel the money could be better spent elsewhere.
