I am sad to see the end of Euro 2008, but happy because the Premier League kick-off is just around the corner and transfers will start to take place in the build-up. The European Championship was a big success and a host of new stars have emerged. My best XI from the tournament is difficult to choose, as there were so many brilliant performances.

In goal I would have Spanish keeper Iker Casillas. The 27-year-old was in terrific form, saving penalties and keeping a clean sheet in every match after the first round. He was the captain of the winning team and fully deserves his place in the side of the tournament, ahead of Italy's Gianluigi Buffon.

My choice of three defenders to be in the starting line-up would be Carles Puyol of Spain and Portuguese duo Jose Bosingwa and Pepe. Bosingwa, now a Chelsea player, had an exceptional competition at right-back. He oozed quality and was unlucky to come up against a strong German side in the quarter-finals or else he could have gone on to be the star of the tournament. His team-mate Pepe also looked good at centre-back and scored his first international goal against Turkey in the first round. As for Puyol, he was a rock in the defence for Spain. His long curly hair was often seen all over the pitch. Now 30, the Barcelona defender played all 90 minutes in the final for his country and his experience showed with the Germans unable to break him down.

In midfield, new Tottenham signing Luka Modric impressed with his pace and energy for Croatia. He is sure to be a sensation in the Premier League. Although only 22, he played with maturity and I loved watching his attacking style during the early rounds.

Michael Ballack was the star of the German side during the tournament and any top manager would have the central midfielder in their squad. He was an instrumental part of Germany’s progress to the final.

My final two midfielders would have to come from champions Spain. Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas had a brilliant tournament. His skills are second to none. His compatriot Xavi Hernandez is my final midfielder in the line-up. The Barcelona star was named player of the tournament and I can see why. Xavi has played more than 60 times for his national side and his experience for club and country helped guide his team to success. He scored the first goal in the semi-final against Russia and set up Torres to score the winner in the final, showing he was crucial to Spain’s success.

I have decided to choose three attackers in my Euro 2008 team. Firstly, David Villa could not be left out of the squad. He was top scorer and is a quality player. He scored the late winner to defeat Sweden in the second game of the group stages, allowing Spain to qualify without needing a result in the final game. The Valencia striker is certain to attract a lot of attention from Europe’s top clubs in the transfer window. His striking partner Fernando Torres also makes my squad. He scored the winning goal in the final to defeat the Germans and was a menace all tournament with his pace and agility against some of Europe’s top defenders. He is a powerful header of the ball and played well with Villa. He is sure to score many goals again this season with Liverpool.

My final place in the Euro 2008 line-up will go to Russia and Spartak Moscow attacker Roman Pavlyuchenko. He is a star for his club and was a star for his national team, guiding the Russians to a surprise semi-final spot. He plays an attacking game and is not afraid to take on defenders or take a shot or two. I expect him to be a transfer target in the summer, too, and with the power and strength he showed up front during the championship he certainly deserves to be in the limelight.

My team from the Euro 2008 is an attacking team as this is what I thought distinguished most of the matches. Even without England, I thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. You cannot argue with the fact that Spain were the best team and that is why so many of their players made it into my final XI.
