With a new manager taking over at Blackburn and the newspapers full of transfer stories concerning some of their top stars, Paul Ince knows he has to move the club onwards and upwards and keep the good work that Mark Hughes did over the past four years intact.

Ince's first challenge this week when the team return for training after a summer break is to try to persuade his top players to stay at Ewood and help Blackburn continue their good progress. If he is not able to do that, he should get the best money he can for his wantaway stars and spend it wisely on quality replacements who know how to play in top-flight football, whether in the Premier League or in one of the top European leagues.

Blackburn may not be a very fashionable club, but they do have a good ethos and if Ince waves the right amount of money at clubs, he could well get the players he wants. So who will he be looking at? Does he already have a list of targets? Well, I know who I would like to see at Ewood Park at the beginning of the new season.

Czech striker Milan Baros has been in the wilderness for the past couple of seasons. He was once part of a formidable Liverpool squad in the Premier League after signing as a youngster in 2002 and he stayed at the club for a couple of season, scoring numerous goals.

Competition was high at Liverpool and it was always going to be tough for him to cement a regular first-team place. He moved further south to Birmingham to be part of the consistent Aston Villa side, where an unfortunate injury hindered his development.

Baros was sold to French champions Lyon in a part-exchange deal but has never settled across the Channel. Although successful with the club, he was loaned out to FA Cup-winning side Portsmouth during the latter half of last season. He failed to score a goal for Pompey but I am sure he just needs a good run with a good quality side to be able to resurect his footballing career.

There is no doubt in my mind about the quality of the Czech Republic attacker. He is still only 26 but has a wealth of experience, having played 59 times for his national side and scoring an impressive 31 goals during those games. He would fit in well with the Blackburn squad and would push Benni McCarthy and Roque Santa Cruz for a place in the starting line-up, that is if Santa stays at Rovers.

Baros is a proven goalscorer and his experience will help the squad in its push for European football. Ince could well pick up the striker for a bargain price if Lyon think he is surplus to requirements, with the likes of Karim Benzema ahead of him in the pecking order at the French club. A player once worth £6.5million, Baros could be bought for considerably less and Ince would still have money to spend on a few others players, though Baros is likely to demand high wages.

There is a lot of work to do at Blackburn, but Ince is excited and ready to get stuck in. I would advise him to work out who he wants and who is suplus to requirements at the club, speak to the chairman about transfer funds and go from there. He needs to keep Santa Cruz and sell David Bentley in my opinion, the latter making it clear he wants to move on.

Blackburn also got considerable compensation from Manchester City when Mark Hughes left, so all I can say is spend it wisely! These are exciting times for Rovers - and I think the signing of Baros could make them even more exciting.
