Statistics don’t lie do they? Of course not, not in football. From 2000 right up to 2007 Spain were the most successful club league in Europe.
Last season it was England, who incidentally finished runners-up to Spain for five of those eight years that Spain were winners. The tide has only just turned towards the Premier League and I’m quite sure that the FA would like it to remain that way.
Italy and Germany make up the four major countries. In fact, the last country to break up this happy quartet was France back in 1996. Before that Belgium and Scotland briefly popped into the equation.
Italy are always there or thereabouts, but the reputation that Serie A has deletes it from almost everyone’s train of thought when asked "Which is the best league in Europe?" Why? It’s not all that entertaining, that’s why.
The Bundesliga is not far behind in that way of thinking. Or is it? Last season’s Bundesliga was full of goals and it does attract some big names from all over the world. Could it be that the rest of Europe just aren’t interested in what goes on in that league? It’s highly likely, especially since Owen Hargreaves moved from Bayern Munich to Manchester United.
The Premier League and La Liga are by far the most entertaining and recently England boast most of the star attractions. It’s no coincidence that Real Madrid want Cristiano Ronaldo. Spain want to be recognised as the best league at all times and to achieve that they need the best players.
Champions League success has been at a lower level for Real recently and that just ain’t good enough for the most successful European club side ever. I can’t decide between the two of them, they both have more plusses than minuses.
They are alike in many ways in that Manchester United and Chelsea can be compared to Real and Barcelona, while Arsenal and Liverpool are the Villarreal and Valencia of England. Valencia had an untimely and almost catastrophic blip last year but that is not likely to happen again.
The next few years will be interesting and the situation will rarely change with these top four being the most successful. But it seems only fair to recognise that, at this moment in time, although it is officially England this year, Spain boasts the most exciting and successful league in Europe.
This was backed up to some extent last month when Spain lifted the Euro 2008 trophy. Well done to them.

By your reasoning, Germany are second, Russia and Turkey 3rd and 4th. Also, Liverpool and Arsenal the Valencia and Villarreal? Are you having us on? Them two clubs would bite off your hand to swap squads and coaches, Valencia won the league when Captain Rafa was in charge and Villarreal only won promotion to the league at the start of the 00's. Seriously, Spain is only attractive for it's weather and nothing more, financially then can't compete with this league and it if wasn't for their rich history and government backings Madrid wouldn't have half the players the currently have. (That said, Chelsea would be the same but they're a rich mans play thing rather than government backed club). by Alan Carroll on July 09, 2008 La Liga is the better league for the purist. Their football is about technique and imagination. Anyone who seen Barce play Man U last season could see who played the far better football. Man Utd scraped through but only through "men behind the ball" football. Liverpool and Chelsea are anti-football compared to Barce or Real. English football still relies far too much on muscle and power rather than technique and imagination. That's why neutral fans will always prefer Spanish football. They play football based on skill and imagination. The plights of the home nations in international football show that it isn't the foreigners in the Prem who make it too direct, it's the locals who never learn that technique above physique is what football is about. by Mika Haavisto on July 10, 2008 Mike, sorry, hmm.. have you ever actually watched spanish football? Apart from the fact that quite a few of the players do tend to cry when ever someone else comes close (C.Ronaldo in Euro2008 btw, so don't tell me that players who play in uk don't do that!), the leaque is a LOT more entertaining! The only reason english football is 'better' than the rest in europe is marketing, and thus money. by haftom tesfay on July 10, 2008 I often times ask my self whether i'm watching a real football or american's football in the Eglish league. Why is the league deeply concerned abaut physical strength than the real art of football?for me the answer is simple and it is only becouse the league is buisness orientated. So idon't see any good reason to argue the league as a better league from Laliga. by Darren Dawson on July 11, 2008 Aston Villa 4 Chelsea 4 - Portsmouth 6 Reading 4 - Spurs 4 Chelsea 4 - spurs 4 Aston Villa 4 spurs 6 Reading 4 - What an earth are you talking about? The premiership is the best and most exiting leauge in the world by far! who cares how many times Real have won the CL or how Man U beat Barca? for genuine exitement (which is what we all want to see) the PL is the most watched league in the world - end of argument!
