The appointment of Juande Ramos as Tottenham boss was supposed to herald the dawn of a new era down at White Hart Lane.
Having won consecutive UEFA Cups with unfashionable Sevilla - as well as the Copa del Rey - the Spaniard looked to have the golden touch when it came to silverware. Indeed, it seemed the club had finally found the right man when, in his first season in charge, he led Spurs to Carling Cup victory - their first trophy in nine barren years.
So why does is suddenly look like it's all going horribly wrong down at the Lane?
Next season was supposed to be the one that proved they were finally on the right track, the one where they built impressively on last season's League Cup win with more of the same, the one where they at last realised their long-awaited dream of becoming serious challengers to the Big Four.
But, just when the future started to look peachy, it's all gone pear-shaped. The fearsome strike force that saved them from dismal defeat so many times over the last two years - and produced some of the most thrilling games in recent memory - have all decided they've had enough.
Jermain Defoe was the first to go. Not content with spending 70 minutes of every match warming the bench, he decided to try his luck elsewhere. It says something when a player prefers to ply his trade in Portsmouth rather than fight to get into the Tottenham first-team.
It is surely only a matter of time before Dimitar Berbatov is on his way to Manchester United. It's not exactly a tough decision - play for the third-best team in your city or the best in Europe in front of 75,000 every week? I know what I'd rather be doing.
Then there's Robbie Keane, who will be wearing the red of his beloved Liverpool next season. Again, I can't see him agonising over that one. For a man who's edging towards the end of his career, guaranteed Champions League football and a realistic crack at the title are not to be sniffed at.
That only leaves Darren Bent and new boy Giovani Dos Santos to bang in the goals next season - hardly the most awe-inspiring of front lines. Let's face it, Bent had one decent season for Charlton in 2005 and has followed that up with a few years of solid under-achievement.
And Dos Santos? Well, to say he's inexperienced is like saying Amy Winehouse likes the occasional tipple. You can't expect an untried 19-year-old to lead the line for a Premier League team expected to challenge for a Champions League spot! The lad only managed four goals in 38 appearances for Barcelona last season - and he clearly wasn't up to their standard or they wouldn't have let him go so easily.
So, another year that promised so much will probably end the same way they usually do at White Hart Lane - mid-table, trophyless and dreaming of turning that corner next season.

last 3 seasons... 5th, 5th, and a Cup? Doesn't look very "mid-table and trophyless" to me. You've embarrassed yourself there, haven't you, sunshine?

So Keane and Berba are definitely leaving are they? And if they do, we won't find any suitable replacements, is that what you're telling us? I suggest you concentrate on the failings of your own club last season, Dave, and leave Spurs to us.

Himself has written this!!! Has the feel of a woman scorned about it! The 5-1 still hurting Madame Wenger? Jermain Defoe- LOST the fight to get into Spurs' first team to Robbie Keane, had 1 yr left on his contract, Spurs got rid. Berbatov- Asking price of 35 million, no bid made let alone accepted...quietly confident he will stay. Keane- asking price of 20+ million, no bid made, let alone accepted, quietly confident he will stay(both are on long term contracts also) Bent- had TWO GREAT seasons for Charlton, hasn't been giving much of a run at Spurs yet but he will score goals when given the chance. Dos Santos...your ex-lover Henry has come out and said just how good this kid is this week. Surely you will take the opinion of a former lover Madame Wenger? All in all, utter tosh my ARSEanal friend. Nice 12 million wasted on a show pony today called Nasri too!!! New Zidane? Don't make me laugh..he ain't even the new Taarabt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tottenham are a team of dreamers they are nothing special and the only ones who have the quality, the fanbase and who are big enough to break into the top 4 is Everton FC as they proved so many times.

haha! Dave Smith, what a crass and arrogant little man you are. Obviously a bitter Gooner.... hope you're looking forward to another trophyless season. ps. 5-1.

Who writes this dribble? "All going wrong at the Lane"? We've just signed three of Europes most sought after youngest talents in Europe, have a proven winner of a manager who is just getting his first chance to shape his own team after winning the league cup with somebody else's squad. We are one of the richest clubs in Europe who can afford to be strong in the transfer market, and are looking to expand the ground or build a new one. So one, (maybe two) of our strikers are looking at going to other clubs who are already in the Champions League, does that mean we are in turmoil? Of course it doesn't you fool. Defoe was sold because we wanted to sell him. "That only leaves Darren Bent and Dos Santos"?! haha. You idiot, do you think Spurs will end up with that pairing next season and not sign replacements? Do yourself and everyone else a favor and don't post your biased rubbish again.

Why don't you write an informed intelligent article about how spurs may or may not break into the top 4 next season, or even better how about how arsenal cannot keep their own players happy. All you wrote was a piece of ill informed biased shite to get a reaction, well done, now get home for your tea and i'll let you go on top tonight
by yidarmy on July 11, 2008
Keane says he's going no where, Berbatov will leave if we are not challenging for Europe in january, dos santos will be put on the left wing, bentley is a yid, clubs agreeing a fee as Ince doesn't want him the leave & another trophyless season, we've got the carling cup you dipstick.
Everton are the only ones who can break the top four, they have done it so many times? haha. I think it was once recently wasn't it? Football didn't start 15 years ago you prat. Christ almighty, is it school holidays?
by Jazzy McJazz on July 11, 2008
Emmanuel Adebayor ,Mathieu Flamini, Aliaksandr Hleb.

What a load of rubbish. First of all insulting to Portsmouth who arent that bad a team. Defoe left to get more game time and it shows the measure of the man who would put regular football ahead of sitting on the bench to pick up a fat cheque each week. Im still gutted we sold him though. Second point, I will be extremely suprised if Keane left for Liverpool. Firstly, who decided that he was a 'pool fan. He has said himself in the past that he was a Celtic fan since he was a boy when linked with them in the past. Secondly, I think he loves the club too much to leave. There may well have been some whispers along the corridors of the Lane that if Spurs were to have accepted a bid by Liverpool, that he may be open to talks with them, but I doubt very much that he will have specifically requested to talk to them. He has had ample opportunity to leave in the past when Defoe and Mido were favoured by Jol, so why would he leave now when he has just won his first major trophy and is involved in the best squad assembled at Spurs since he joined? As for Berbatov, I doubt he will be leaving before the season starts. Man U will try to play their old favourite by chucking a decent offer Spurs' way 48hrs before the deadline, thinking that Spurs will baulk, but after the Carrick saga and the way that it set the team as a whole back, I very much doubt Levy will fall for the same ploy again. As for future transfers, forget about Luis Garcia and Bentley. Taraabt should be given a more prominent role on his natural position of right wing, with all the stops pulled to try and get Capel. Failing that, move Bale to left mid and then go after a top quality left back. I wouldnt mind Wayne Bridge. We still need a midfield general. Veloso for around £20m???
Don't worry all you spurs fans, i will give him a big spanking when he gets home tonight, he likes me cause i am pre-op.

Who has won more in the last 4 years spurs or arseholnal
by rob jones on July 11, 2008
Article assumes when these 2 players go and we get £50m that we won't spend it on replacements. Why do people bother reading this rubbish but then again why did I bother to post a comment on this dross
by Slabber on July 11, 2008
Robbie Keane is a Celtic fan, not a Liverpool fan.
sad goon nob, you hav,nt got a clue, what a crap artical.
by jj j on July 11, 2008
It's funny how sh*te this article actually is! It stinks of a biased fan. Bent was top english goal scorer two seasons in a row for a start! No knowledge, no fact, complete tosh!
Everton broke into the top 4 and also challange the top 4. Tottenham have never and dont challange. Lets face it your a nothing club. And before you say Wigan are I know we are but atleast we are happy to be in the Premier League your just like us a nothing club and you only have 2 more league titles than us too.
by Ding Dong Dell on July 11, 2008
This ar5ena1 boy smells bad, but did his sportingo task well in getting a bucketload of response, however abusive. Job done.
by Gob Beldof on July 11, 2008
Why on earth is a Wigan fan getting involved? Enjoy the relegation battle next season. Nonsense article, worst case scenario with Keane & Berbatov being sold would raise in the region of £40m-£50m for the transfer kitty.
by dan on July 11, 2008
Counting your chickens before they're hatched me thinks - berbs & Keane have not left & imo won't.Even if they did it wouldn't be till we had got suitable replacements just as the arse will only sell adebayor if they get someone else. You really are an utter prat!
by bubble 9 on July 11, 2008
Three reasons why spurs will kick ass next season. 1: The defence which will start next year King, Woodgate, Bale and Hutton with Gomes in goal will be far better defensive unit then last year. King and Bale were out for most of last year and Hutton and Woodgate joined in January. This time round there will be no error prone Kaboul or Robinson around. 2: The midfield has had creativity and flair with Dos Santos and a touch of steel and vision with the addition of Modric. Did you see the tackles he made in Euro 2008, for a small man he gets stuck in and delivers a killer through ball. (By the way, Dos Santos was offered a new deal by Barca, which he rejected, and as he had only one year left on his contract they sold him now then losing him for free next year) 3: Our forward line up is as good as any in the prem. And there is no reason to think that it will change. Has anyone heard Berba or Robbie asking to leave ( like Adebayor,Flamini,Hleb) No. And even if they did, the cash they would get for these 2 players could hit £50m. More then enough for suitable replacements. Its agents and idiots like Rafa Benitez trying to stir up trouble and ill informed morons like the writer of this article trying to put down other teams as they can see the cracks in their own teams and fear for their future.
