Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost: Who is Formula 1's No. 1?
Put them all togetgher on the starting grid and it would be difficult to separate them at the chequered flag.

Formula One. The very name conjures up images of speed, danger, money, jetset lifestyle and playboy drivers. It is the very pinnacle of motorsport and every schoolboy’s fantasy (the one not involving girls, that is) is to be a driver.
Opinions vary as to who the real stars of F1 are. Is it the multi-million dollar cars, or the modern day chariot racers who pilot them around the track. The truth is, that no matter how good a car you build, without that special talent behind the wheel, they will go nowhere. If proof is needed, enter Ferrari before Michael Schumacher as Exhibit A.
A good driver does more than just sit behind the wheel, they will be an integral part in the development and tuning of the car. All of the telemetry in the world cannot tell the engineers what it ‘feels’ like to drive the car.
So, who was the best? Ask a dozen different F1 fans and you’ll probably get as many different answers, but there are a handful who will appear in most people’s top five drivers of all time. For me, the list is – in no particular order – Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

I really did not like him, but you have to admit Schumacher is in a league of his own. I'd say Senna and Prost would probably be tied for second, Schumacher actually was the perfect mix of Senna and Prost's best attributes, he had the recklessness and killer instinct of Senna and the precision and calmness of Prost... I'd probably also throw Niki Lauda into the convesation for top 5 driver of all time. He was absolutely magnificent at the time.

Too right Greg, As a long suffering McLaren fan, I hated Schumi with a passion, but he sure could drive. Fair point about Lauda, I saw him drive in his heyday and he was very good. I included Clark and Fangio on reputation. I would have really loved to have seen Clark drive. Can't wait for the season to start again on Sunday. Cheers.

Nobody becomes No 1 without stepping on fragile toes. Schumi did what had to be done, as ALL great people do. Now,I know someone will disagree, but at the end of the day the record books show his results and no-one can ever dispute that. It will be a long time before another driver comes close to matching his results. Schumi surpassed the best of the best.

Michael Schumacher is my number 1 and hero, i have enjoyed every race he has entered in formula 1, nobody will ever beat his records and nobody will be as good as him.
