THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL

Tonight sees a return to European action with 16 teams battling it out in the Champions League. Gordon Strachan's Celtic travel to Aalborg needing a victory to help with their push for a UEFA Cup spot, while the other two teams in Group E, Villarreal and Manchester United, also go head to head. Arsenal take on Dynamo Kiev hoping for a change of fortune and it's Fenerbahce v Porto in the other Group G match. Spanish champions Real Madrid travel to BATE Borisov, while Zenit St Petersburg will be desperate for three points against already-qualified Juventus. Elsewhere, in Group F it's Bayern Munich v Steaua Bucharest and Fiorentina v Lyon.

The rest of the Champions League lot are in action on Wednesday night. Chelsea are in Bordeaux looking to secure their passage into the last 16, while Group A's other encounter sees Cluj at home to Roma. Sporting Lisbon have a tough task at home to form team Barcelona as the Spaniards are scoring goals for fun at the minute, while Shakhtar Donetsk take on Basle in the other Group C game. Liverpool will be targeting three points against Marseille and Atletico Madrid face Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven. The night's other two matches are Anorthosis Famagusta v Werder Bremen and Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan v Panathinaikos.

On Thursday it's UEFA Cup night and 32 teams go head to head. Big games on the night include Schalke v Manchester City, NEC Nijmegen v Tottenham and Portsmouth v AC Milan.

Saturday and Sunday sees a return to league action with a full programme in the English Premier League and the SPL, as well as the Championship. Elsewhere, there's action in Italy's Serie A, Germany's Bundesliga and Spain's La Liga.
