The NRL and Super League seasons are over and it's time for the Rugby League World Cup in Australia, starting next weekend, the first match being England against Papua New Guinea.

It's a foregone conclusion that Australia will win the tournament, with England and New Zealand the only countries capable of beating them.

Some people might believe otherwise, but I think the Rugby League World Cup is a joke. There are too many countries that are simply not good enough. Ireland, for instance, don't even have a competition at home, while Papua New Guinea don't have any decent players despite the fact that rugby league is the country's national sport.

I think that Samoa and Tonga are the only teams capable of pulling off upsets, but there's only a five per cent chance of that happening. However, Samoa have some New Zealand players appearing, which has been a talking point over the past few weeks. If you are going to play for one country you should stick to it. Can you imagine Richie McCaw playing for Samoa or Daniel Carter playing for Wales?

They are not doing the game any favours, only trying to make it a bit more competitive. Rugby league is a great game but by doing this they won't make any progress.

I think it's a foregone conclusion who will win the World Cup, but we have seen surprises before in the Tri-Nations, and if New Zealand and England can play out of their skins, we could be in for a few shocks.
