Home > Rugby > Rugby Union > Part Bee Gee, part Borat – the voice of South African rugby TALKS a good game

During the 1970s and 80s England placed a ban on Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams. Every word escaping his lips was censored and I find it rather funny that in South Africa, some Springbok fans have called for this type of gagging of their rugby union coach, Peter De Villiers, aka ''The Voice''.
When I think of wacky comments I first think of Henry Blofeld - an English cricket commentator who's celebrated for his idiosyncratic mentioning of superfluous detail during and after games - but my list of one-liner wonders has rapidly rocketed past Ali G, Borat and George W Bush to Springbok rugby coach De Villiers.
I think he's watched one Matrix film too many and believes he's The Oracle. The man is the Don Quixote of rugby union and the wind he's churned up in his daft interviews is creating quite a stink in rugby circles.
Some fume that the man must be gagged (bound and shot), but I think he's great. He is pure entertainment (and a comedy genius) and, as a Bok coach/clown, should be embraced rather than shut up.
He's Homer Simpson, Ali G and Borat all rolled into one. Add a YMCA moustache, Bee Gee voice and George W Bush-like wisdom and you've got pure gold. I tell you, rugby is infinitely more colourful with this character in it.
Gone are the days of boring Bok coaches like Andre Maakgraaf and Co. Who misses them? In the yin-yang of rugby union, De Villiers is the Jackie Chan. Here are some pearls of wisdom from the ''Oracle'' of Bok rugby...
"If you want to play with the big boys, you have to be prepared to lift your feet."
“I was appointed to make rugby decisions. I promised to be honest and focus on rugby. We never said it was going to be a perfect world. If you look at the Bible, Joseph started out in the pit and ended up in the palace.”
"He who laughs last, laughs the lastest"
"I tell you what, I don’t think we were that bad yesterday. It was just not our day guys." (After a string of three lost matches!)
"The ref had a shocker!" (After four defeats in the 2008 Tri-Nations)
"We are seeing a Bok side break a line. That never even happened under Jake White much. We need to stay patient. I also want results now. But there is a slight shift in our style of play and I think it may not be the worst thing."
"I'm not saying I'm God!" (After 53–8 victory over the Wallabies)
"Believe in me!"
"I don’t get cross if people don’t believe in me, because that’s their view. I got a job at WP and I was successful in that job. That’s all that mattered to me.”
"As for only being an assistant coach, you don’t have to be a pilot to fly from Cape Town to Durban; you can be the co-pilot too. You still get to your destination safely."
"A small talented guy will always be better than a big untalented guy, and a big talented guy is better than a small talented guy."
"The Boks play 12 Tests this year, and I want to win all 12. One loss in a season is one too many.” (Obviously said before the Tri-Nations)
"If we win all our games, it shows we’ve built on the winning culture created by Jake. If we lose, perhaps it’s because there have been a few changes and we are busy rebuilding. So I think I’m in a win-win situation."
"Even the bad times are good."
"Loving myself enables me to love others and congratulate them when they achieve something. I know what I want from life and I always back my own abilities. I’m not afraid to use the expertise of others, but most of the time I rely on myself."
This is only the tip of the De Villiers iceberg of wisdom - nine-tenths of his ''genius'' lies beneath the surface awaiting a victim like the Titanic. I'm hoping it's not the Boks, but I'm wearing my life preserver just in case!
