It's nervous times for Wellington supporters as the Ranfurly Shield is up for grabs against Auckland at Eden Park on Saturday night. Wellington have not lifted the famous Log O' Wood since 1982. Will history repeat itself? Will we see Wellington lose in the dying seconds? Or will we see a famous win?
Unfortunately for Wellington, Steve Walsh will be refereeing. Oh no - not again! He has made some pretty tough desicons against Wellington in the past but, come Saturday, I'm sure he'll be up for it. But let's talk about the game a bit more.
Auckland have had an average season due to injuries, but they will be pleased to have Isaia Toeva playing at No.10. Now, I have been pretty impressed with his performances in the All Black jersey, but this is completely different. It's a Ranfurly Shield challenge and it's one of the most important trophies in New Zealand rugby - if not THE most important.
What will be the key to an Auckland win? Well, they have to keep the ball in hand and keep attacking. They will also have to put pressure on Cory Jane, who has been deadly at the back, and must not give the ball to Hosea Gear because if he finds space he's gone. They will also have to shut down Piri Weepu, who has been one of the key players in the Wellington team.
If Wellington want to lift the Ranfurly Shield they will have to do what they have been doing superbly all season - keeping the opposition under pressure in defence. They will have to be patient when they get the ball in hand and try to spread the ball out wide to Gear, who has been dynamic on the wing all season, as often as possible. Finally, they will need to let Victor Vito have more of the ball because he has been showing great determination to beat players on the outside.
As you know, it's a big occasion for all the players, coaches, management staff and fans who will turn up to Eden Park to enjoy this wonderful game. As for who's going to take the Shield, it may well be down to which Wellington team turns up on the day.
