Black Marks for the Super 14 ref who got it wrong at the double
Referees have the hardest job in sport. When they get it right nobody notices and when they get it wrong everyone bays for blood. During Saturday's Hurricanes v Sharks game, referee Paul Marks made four huge decisions and seemed to get two of them horribly wrong.

I labelled referee Paul Marks ''weak willed'' after he failed to deal with a high tackle correctly during the Chiefs v Cheetahs Super 14 game. Growing a backbone and no longer being afraid to make the big decisions is a good thing, but Marks first needs to get his rulings right.
The first big decision in Saturday's game came in the 59th minute when he gave Hurricanes prop Neemia Tialata a yellow card for an off-the-ball charge on Stefan Terblanche. This decision was clearly correct; Tialata moved into the path of Terblanche deliberately as the Sharks fullback chased a kick - and did so right in front of the assistant referee.
Just five minutes later Marks was called into action again when Sharks replacement Epi Taione head-butted a Hurricanes forward while joining a maul. Marks deliberated with his assistant to make sure he had the right player, then sent off Taione - and few could argue that decision. In fact, Taione will probably serve a long suspension for his indiscretion.
Having got two big calls right, Marks undid all his good work in the final ten minutes of the game. Hot on attack, the Sharks set up a textbook rolling maul which went to ground as it crossed the goal line, but the attacking side were unable to ground the ball.

Yes it was but a bigger problem is the standard of rugby being played its poor and very very boring rugby league looks better everyday the new rules havent done much i just think rugby union has done its dash.

Brad's right, the crusaders are the only team playing good footy. The standard of ref's is unacceptable and its a real turn off. What a kick in the guts to 44 blokes who played a tough game to not even go upstairs and get it right! To make things even worse he seemed happy at the end of it all knowing he was on camera. SANZAR should be sitting in on AFL/NRL meetings taking notes on how to do things correctly, those comps are light years ahead of the "super" 14

I agree with Shar Quay AFL/NRL comps light years ahead. I think the game of rugby could benefit from televised assistance to refs. A fine balance would need to be achieved but the modern game would benefit with less marginal decisions. This would benefit teams and cultures dedicated to the basics of the game and not spoiling tactics. This years super 14 has been marred by poor refs. I could rant and rave about refs. But the way Paddy handled the group match between England and SA 2003 RWC. Will Greenwood was so offside. But thats in the past. Paul Honiss(forget the year) springs to mind when he told John Smit to talk to his boys and then played on. Ireland scored and won the game.
