The All Blacks put on one of their worst-ever preformances in losing to the Wallabies in Sydney. That might sound a bit harsh, but they had plenty of opportunities which they wasted time and again. They kept knocking it on when they were on attack or they got penalised for not rolling away.
People are questioning the referee's preformance, particularly over the penalty-try incident, but that is no excuse for the New Zealanders' second successive defeat. They had the chances to win the game but made too many mistakes.
However, it wasn't all bad from an All Blacks' perspective. Daniel Carter was amazing as usual, with his dazzling breaks up the middle, and Mils Muliaina was dangerous when counter-attacking.
But one of the disappointments during the second half was Sione Lauaki. I really rate the guy as an awesome player when he is on form, but he just didn't have a good game. No wonder he kept knocking the ball on when he was trying to hold it with one hand instead of keeping it secure in both hands.
The All Blacks really felt the loss of captain Richie McCaw because the Wallabies kept turning over the ball and New Zealand failed to capitalise. I'm not saying that Daniel Braid had a particularly bad game, it's just that New Zealand needed McCaw to deal with the Australian loose forward trio because he is the world's best at it.
What changes do the All Blacks need to make? Well, they need to put Rodney So'oialo at No.8 because I think that he is better suited to that position, and they need to put Lauaki on the bench and put Adam Thomson in there because he can hold the ball in two hands and he can run.
Lauaki needs to take a week off and think about his mistakes and move on and try to become a better player the following week in Brisbane. With Andy Ellis out, Piri Weepu should be given a chance because he is our next best halfback since Brendon Leonard is injured.
Changes are clearly needed, but the truth is that the Australians were just too good yesterday. Time for the All Blacks to regroup this week in preparation for the do or die re-match with the Wallabies at Eden Park this coming weekend.
