rugby players have a quiet toughness as they bang heads on the pitch while football players make a dance out of every little piece of play they make, help make or don't make..typical American showoffishness..
by Rob on July 24, 2007
The reason rugby players don't dance around after a hit is because the game does not stop. The structure of American football allows players to celebrate every single success (yes, to the dismay of many fans and team mates). Playing and coaching American football in New Zealand has shown me that no matter what culture a person is from, they dance and celebrate after a big hit, pass, run, tackle, etc....because they can. I'm sure if you watched "typical Americans" playing rugby they wouldn't have the time for the showoffishness and thus wouldn't display it. Rugby and American Football are apples and oranges, they'll always have a bit in common, but can't really be compared.

The stoppage of play gives not only an opportunity, but also reason for celebrations. A pass which allows a winger to run through half the field in rugby is a common thing what with the non-stop action. In American Football each play is dissected by the defence, because they have time to do so, thus a huge play, or even a simple sideout pass that gets the necessary gain is that much more rare to find. I don't like the celebration-happy players of today as I too think that it is overdone, but the start of this whole culture is understandable.

Sorry folks, but you're just plain wrong. Firstly, most players are discouraged from these outlandish celebrations. Unless you have a weak coach who doesn't assert his authority over his players, these celebrations just don't happen that often. As for sporting spectacle, forget the NFL, there's reason why it's called the No Fun League. The owners and the league have sanitized it to the point of the pro game being like Starbucks around the world. It's the same bland boring product where ever you go. Let me say that I love rugby, as an American I love playing it and love being a fan of the international game. Yet, when all is said and done it's my 2nd favorite sport after American college football which has all the spectacle and drama of rugby and football(soccer) and much more. I loved watching the haka when the All-blacks came to the UK and beat up, well everyone but as impressive as that is you need to see what college football teams do get their fans and players into a frenzy. Firstly, masc
(continued from previous post) Firstly, mascots. Forget about the dumb costumed ones perpatrated on fans of the NFL and now speading like a disease to Man. U. and other football teams. You've never seen an entrance until you've seen Ralphie, a live 1 ton American Buffalo/Bison run onto the field at the Uni. of Colorado, or the USC Trojans having Traveller the warhorse and it's Greek warrior ride into the stadium and throw down his sword into the pitch, or Florida St.'s Chief Osceola ride his horse into the stadium and throw his flaming spear into the ground. There's lots more like Texas' Bevo, a longhorn cattle, or Mike the Tiger, at LSU, or UGA the Bulldog at Georgia just for starters. Teams running on the field; One of the better one's is Virginia Tech and Michigan and their pre-game rally's or the SC Trojans walking through the tunnel out onto the Coliseum floor chanting 'War Time'. Fight Songs, as an American living in the UK, I know the soccer fans like brag about how their fans sing together
BTW, sorry for long and broken up posts but it needs to be said. I can go on and on about why the college football game is better talk about fight songs like 'hail to the victors', 'Rocky Top', et al. but if you ever get the chance just go to a college football game take advantage of it. Also, go to one of the better team's like Michigan, Tennessee both selling out 100,000 seat stadiums every season, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Texas, USC, Ohio St., Florida, Florida St., Alabama. They're all there, with fans and traditions as good as anything you'll find at a rugby or football game and IMO, much better than football for the glaring lack of hooliganism and racism.

why is everyone deliberating the merits of the different sports what you should be doing is celebrating what makes them great. american football is a technical game where the strategy set out by the coach is as important as the skill of the player. like a game of chess. rugby s a completely different sport as are baseball and cricket. Rugby is a fast flowing game, and due to the lack of stoppages means that games can be a war of attrition, where the game can hang on a single piece of brilliance or a single mistake. variety is the spice of life and i dont blame anyone for defending there own sport of choice, however different cultures have different traditions especially in sport and this loyalty should be revered and embraced instead of arguing over whether a clubs mascot is a man in a foam suit of a bison. because in the end that does not really matter. and on the matter of hooliganism and racism in soccer. racism has been all but removed from the english game and only holds sway on the continent and due to
