Great Team Hamish but one change; Merthens for wilkinson as the man with the golden boot was magnificent in 95 and 99 while wilkinson only did it in 03. i think larkham was an unsung hero in 99 and was a possible inclusion.

Good team. I missed the 1st 2 RWCs, so out of the remaining 3 cups my team would be: 15 - Andre Joubert (1995) 14 - Jeff Wilson (1995) 13 - Brian O'Driscoll ('99 & '03) 12 - Tim Horan (1999) 11 - Jona Lomu ('95 & '99) 10 - Johnny Wilkinson (2003) 9 - Joost vd Westhuizen ('95) 8 - Zinzan Brooke (1995) 7 - Josh Kronfeld (1995) 6 - Ab Benazzi (1995) 5 - John Eales (1999) 4 - Martin Johnson (2003) 3 - Phil Vickery (2003) 2 - Keith Wood (1999) 1 - Os du Randt (1995)

I'd swap Serge Blanco for Gallagher at full-back - his late try against Australia in '87 was one of the greatest (and most important) of all time. Mehrtens for Jonny? I think not!

Hamish, you have picked a great team, excellent summary, very well researched, great article!! I'm keen to know who you would select as captain though....

James if you cared to read the article you would see that the players are only from world cup winning countries - not two-wime runner-ups.

Doesn't say that anywhere..."we take a nostalgic look back at the players who shone at the previous five World Cups." Apologies if I misunderstood, but I have already 'cared to read the article'.

Care to read that?

Yeah a nice side. I think it's a big call to pick Gallagher, but then there are very few other quality fullbacks. Only Jonah Lomu hasn't got a World CUp medal in this side. What about Burke as a fullback? It is a difficult one as there haven't been many quality fullbacks for more than one fullback on end.

Zinny never won the Cup either. (Unless he was a third stringer in 1987 or something). This is just a list of great World Cup rugby players not World Cup winners. If it happens that the winners are also great then it just means the winners were the right ones.
