In the history of the tournament, the All Blacks have been the most consistent losers. Three times beaten semi-finalists, once losing finalists. Only in the first tournament in 1987 did they live up to the promise and win the trophy, beating France 29-9. So why have they failed so spectacularly to fulfil their potential and take what many view as their right place in the history books? Perhaps the most obvious answer is the fast and open style of rugby they play. While thrilling for spectators to watch, it’s a high-risk style that can be difficult to achieve. 'The fast and open style of rugby that the All Blacks play, while thrilling for spectators to watch, is a high-risk style that can be difficult to achieve'To begin with, it requires players of the highest athletic ability. That’s not a problem for the New Zealanders; they have always been good athletes. It also needs players with high skill levels, again not a problem area. Max Boyce sang a song about a Welsh factory producing outside halves; the New Zealanders took that idea, combined it with Japanese technology, and the result was players like Joe Rokocoko and Daniel Carter. So the All Blacks have the athleticism and skill for the 15-man, open-handling style of rugby that they play. What’s also needed is the ability to make snap judgements; to play to a planned strategy but to be able to abandon that if it’s failing or another opportunity arises. Decisions have to be made quickly. Each man has to be aware of where his own team-mates are, where the opposition players are, and where they all will be in a second’s time. Fast of foot and fast of brain. Luck has very little to do with it. And, inevitably, this is where there will be mistakes. Not even the All Blacks can get it right every time. Maybe luck does have something to do with it.

Spot on. And what's more, they have to get the ball to play their fast open style. Forwards that are mobile, agile, skillful usually don't have the strength, grit and grunt to win the ball. But you have to admire Graham Henry's courage in sticking to his dream; their style is entertaining and exciting. And in some ways it would be nice to see someone play like this and win. But I'd rather it was England! Come on the 'All whites' (I've got to hope haven't I)

i think, as is the norm, the all blacks have peaked in the year prior to the WC and are now on the decline - but i think they will still manage to take it, and 20 years on i think we will be seeing another NZ -France final with the all blacks being the victors...

They play a brutal game but not attractive.Yes they have peaked again to soon. Its Australia or England for me

The obvious has been stated, thanks Liz. I'm pretty sure you'll see every player at the world cup is skilled and athletic, otherwise we shouldn't bother. To say the All Blacks have peaked early is ridiculous to say the least. How many times do you need to be reminded that the AB's are physically peaking in October. There is science behind this its not luck of the draw. Don't give up your day job.

Mike need to watch a few All Black games. The All Black forwards are never dominated by any team (in recent years) The All Black game is MORE than the single dimensional game played by countries like England. Did you not see the All Black forwards blow Australia off the ball with huge forward drives in the last test which showed yet another string to their bow? Did you not see the Aust scrum collapse and falter continually? Make no mistake this AB team is well rounded and well proven in all areas. They will be difficult to beat.

Excellent and witty article which makes rugby interesting to me, a non-sports fan!

Hi Liz - great article! I agree that the All Blacks have peaked between another world cup, however, I still think they can win the trophy this year. The AB backs still managed to score more tries than SA and Australia in the Tri Nations - even with the defence from all three teams almost mechanical in their brilliance. And they always save their best rugby for the end of the year. Most All Black fans will hope this time will be no different.

Your article is great, Liz, even though I'm not really a union fan, being more into rugby league. However, the All Blacks won the Bledisloe Cup in the game with Australia last weekend. True, the weather probably had a helping hand, but generally, I think the All Blacks may still have "it". Naturally, I'd like to Australia win the World Cup, but it's anyone's guess as to who the winner will actually be

Thank you for the article. Very informative for an American. I know a little about soccer, but I'm a novice when it comes to Rugby. Again, thanks.

Interesting analysis. The question will be settled by the playing of the game, not by debate here. At this high level of world competition, always expect the unexpected to come along and influence the outcome...

How can you improve on this?

For all their athleticism and technical ability, they can still be undone by flair and the shock of having something done to them that they simply can't 'compute'. They're trained and analysed to hell and back, and boy are they good, but an inspired team will still shock them enough to have the beating of them.

It is hard to know if the All Blacks are on the way up the form slope or going down the other side. They still won the Tri Nations. Traditionally the World Cup finals are intense and physical. They will need to smarten up and change their tactics like they did in the Bledisloe Cup final match. Field position will win the World Cup.
It only takes one game for any side to be eliminated and unfortunately that is the nature of a World Cup. If it was a best of three or seven finals like other sports then the All Blacks would win as they have a very good record. It only takes one day when the passes don't stick (like earlier this season) for them to be bundled out. YOu wouldn't write off the French at home especially, they are a passionate nation. No one knows if Graham Henry is any good until the All Blacks win the World Cup, but the other teams have nothing to lose and no pressure on them. They also will be inspired to beat the All Blacks. Most teams dream of beating the All Blacks in a final or semi.

If the All blacks play to the potential the world knows they have, they have the ability to destroy most teams. The teams they need to worry about meeting, if they do not peak, are Argentina,France,South Africa and Ireland, all of these teams can create an upset and have well drilled all round units that can play for 80 minutes plus. The All Blacks have not played particulary well of late but when you have a squad of 30 match winners that are at the top of world rugby with their eyes set on making the squad and winning the world cup, you can understand why their form has dipped, once they are at the tournament they will show the doubters why they are and have been the worlds best team for the last 4 years!

Hopefully not Liz, but they seem to have a difficult time pulling this one off.
by Brad on July 31, 2007
Rob and Andy you morons how can you say they have peaked to early when they lost to Aus just recently and then beat Aus with a performance not close to there best if NZ play a perfect game they would put 40 points easily on the wallabies.
by Scott Donaldson on August 02, 2007
Potential is a great word. If all teams achieved their perfect game playing to their potential the All Blacks would win hands down. I believe the Wallabies are the most consistent team in the World. You get the feeling if there is less variance in the Wallabies performance. But if the All Blacks play to somewhere near their potential, they should win.
by Colin Campbell on August 07, 2007
Beware the canny Scots. Great article. Everyone was very surprised here in Australia when the Wallabies beat them. Nobody was surprised when the All Blacks beat them in New Zealand. Hard to see anyone other than South Africa beat New Zealand.
