Yep, not much goin our way (proud Otago supporter). Think we can get back up there but, like you say, need some good EXPERIENCED players and a top coach for the highlanders. Anybody keen?

These provinces have the longest provincial rivalry in the country, but reality is bad. The University no longer attracts quality players like it once did. The lack of quality backs is a huge concern. I would hope the Highlanders could get their hands on Ali Williams and co, (disgruntled Blues) and if Warren Gatland coaches the Highlanders, that he can bring some quality outside backs down and get them to sign up for Air NZ Cup as well. We don't really want established stars to an extent as we would lose them to the Tri Nations. Ali Williams, Joe Rokocoko and Tony Woodcock will be prime targets after the David Nucifora debacle.

Could someone explain how players are incentivised in the NPC. Are the salaries anything substantial?
Players who make the basic Super 14 squads start on $65,000 while the NPC players only get around $20,000. This means many of them who aren't involved with Super 14 must get other jobs or study. These types of players sometimes go overseas and earn some good money. There is a draft in New Zealand if there are too many good players in a particular Super 14 franchise, the other franchises can draft a player just for the Super 14. If they transfer for the Air NZ Cup they can potentially get a SUper 14 contract. There was a salary cap for the Air NZ Cup to spread the talent around. With the All Blacks not playing the Air NZ Cup the salary cap has been laxed for a year. I am not sure what the story is for next year.

The whole game is changed -to my mind this situation is the after effects of professionalism. When money came in loyalty went out! The general comments at the moment suggesting that NZ rugby becoming like English soccer could become our nightmare - even Graham Henry says similar things. I personally hate the thought of someone like Robbie Deans coaching Australia! How could he do it! (money & fame) Equally how can we loose Mcalister to England when he could be an AB superstar? It's beyond understanding. NZ rugby need to address this issue urgently. Rugby down south is the end result of money in the sport. Think of the great AB's of the past ie Mark Shaw - who did he play for? Colin Meads, who did he play for?. Today those guys go the highest bidder or the team that enhances their selection opportunities.

That's is right. The days of ALl Blacks coming from the second division are long gone. People go where the money and selections for higher honours come from like Canterbury or Auckland. The salary cap will never fix it as the big provinces still find ways of getting around it.

Lets be honest now ok the highlanders are very poor but if a player is good enough to go elsewhere i.e Wellington or Auckland why wouldnt he i mean other than money who would want to live in that part of NZ i mean its not the most exciting place to live pretty crappy if you ask me!
