At the start of the year, the New Zealand media focused on the 'Big Four' tournaments coming up in 2007 - the Cricket World Cup, the Americas Cup, the World Netball Championship and the Rugby World Cup. General national well-being hinged on these events, but there was always the feeling that the only one that was really going to dictate the national psyche was the Rugby World Cup. New Zealand were never going to win the cricket World Cup, their semi-final exit being pretty much par for the course (in true Kiwi fashion, they have made five semi-finals for five defeats). Given the disaster of the previous campaign, no-one really expected Team New Zealand to win the Americas Cup, and anyway, with Fly Emirates slapped all over the boat, it was hard to raise too much emotion. And not only are the Silver Ferns’ chances of winning the netball not looking too good, that competition was only included in the list to make the women feel included. Rugby is our national sport, and that was the only event that people really expected New Zealand to win, and with expectation goes pressure. And when it’s 20 years since our only triumph at this event, the pressure can become overwhelming. 'The squad has been selected with many players clearly well below their best'Following the unexpected semi-final exits at the last two Rugby World Cups, the NZRU appointed Graham Henry to take charge, and gave him the opportunity to put his dream team around him, and to call the shots. Three years of near-perfect All Black performances followed, and we entered 2007 sure the mistake of campaigns past would not be repeated. Early in the year, the odds of a NZ win shortened.
But with the omens of past campaigns hanging over his head, Henry and Co pulled out a new theory, the 'Reconditioning Programme'. This was a two-edged sword, not only was the team being effectively selected 12 months out, a tactic unsuccessfully adopted by Sir Clive Woodward when picking his Lions squad, but they would play only minimal rugby for the 12-month period leading up to the Cup. Partly due to the fact that the All Blacks had done so well - a demolition of the Lions and the Grand Slam being the highlights - and partly due to the fact that previous brainchilds had failed, the NZRU agreed to this. So we got a situation where the 'chosen ones' went to the beach, the gym and the hairdressers for the bulk of Super 14. When they did return, most looked woefully down on normal form, and some didn’t even get picked to play. Even through the Test matches to follow, only Richie McCaw and Dan Carter eventually returned to something like previous form. A dozen of the squad travelling to France go there with fewer than 10 first-class games under their belt in 2007 - a pointless hit out against the Christchurch Police force does not qualify.

Interesting start to your article, ‘At the start of the year, the New Zealand media focused on the 'Big Four' tournaments coming up in 2007 - the Cricket World Cup, the Americas Cup, the World Netball Championship and the Rugby World Cup.’ What about Rugby League Tri Series, or the NRL? League is the 4th most popular team sport in NZ behind Rugby, Cricket, and Football (Soccer), possibly 3rd but that’s debatable. Really if you can’t even figure out what sports most Kiwis are interested in how can you profess to know anything about the All Blacks conditioning program or state of their players heading into the World Cup? It’s way too early to start criticising Henry’s plan which can only be assessed after the World Cup and hinges on its success or failure for the All Blacks. The question most of us will asked if they do succeed is whether the conditioning program made a difference. I suppose Henry’s argument is simply that he had to try something different from previous World Cups, after all they failed

Hi AusFob, maybe the NRL and Rugby League Tri Series arn't quite as prestigious as the 'big four'?Knowing whats popular dosn't neccesarily precede knowledge of one particular codes' lead in to a tournament. Where are you coming from?

The jury is still out until the World Cup is over. There is no way of seeing results until then because the players ideally won't be peaking until October. I don't see the NRL and Tri Series as of as much national importance as the other four are only staged every four years. I think Sports Freak is correct as far as that goes because they are such highly anticipated events which come around so seldom, unlike the NRL and Tri Series. As a sports fan I also love the NRL and Tri Series too though, but they weren't as high on my list of priorities. Come on the Warriors usually don't even make the Top Eight!

The Super 14 and rugby 3-nations weren’t in the list of big events for the year, and they’re the equivalent of the league 3N and NRL, so that blows that bleat away. As for the Henry Plan; the parallel with the way the 2005 Lions were handled and selected seems a reasonable one, and that scares me.

In my opinion comments about Braid and Kelleher are right on the money. I don't know about Willis really. But I do know that I hope you are wrong about Robinson. Please be wrong! Oh, and the joke about netball was a bit passe don't you think?

Nor should the super 14 be in any list of importance this year it was boring the standard was poor compared to previous years i got sick of watching it. Even though im a hurricanes fan i find it a joke that Masoe gets picked ahead of Braid he was the form openside this year. To old mate who wrote the article did you expect the All Blacks to fire from game one? The main aim is to peak come world cup time side hold your judgements until after.
I assume you mean Tom Willis here? Royce Willis was a good lock, I wonder what happened to him? I would put Masoe and Weepu in the same category and that makes Masoe lucky!

Some very good points made above. I think that our winning the world cup or not situation will come down to a 'on the day' thing, if its our day we will win. in 99 against france it was purely their day, the allblacks did their best but thats how it happened. Although what you are saying makes me wonder if the reason they didnt want to bring new locks over from NZ was because they didnt go through the program? I mean if you think about it, its not as ridiculous as it seems. I think we have an excellent squad. My worries are around their mind set, they are hero's in new zealand and if they dont stop posing in the beach and put down the golf clubs, then things could get messy.. they need to be humble no matter who they face.
