The talk of the Rugby World Cup opener is, of course, that Les Bleus failed to out-enthuse the Pumas. Argentina now look near-certainties for a semi-final berth, while France will struggle at this rate even to qualify for the quarter-finals. A likely battle against Italy or Scotland could be all that stands in the Pumas' way.
Defending champions England looked far from convincing, and patchy wins by Ireland, Scotland and Wales completed a poor weekend for the Six Nations heavyweights. None of these teams showed anything even resembling the ability to win a world championship.
Meanwhile, the Wallabies and Springboks had excellent victories against Japan and Samoa, but their wins, while impressive, were nothing unexpected and rarely was the collision area competitive.
World Cup favourites New Zealand played the script to perfection. This was Italy, probably the top nation just outside the tier-one teams, with arguably the strongest team in their history - and unlucky not to beat Ireland a few weeks ago. The All Blacks had not played since unconvincingly winning the Bledisloe and Tri Nations. They had relaxed in French sun and had not fired a single broadside in anger.
A late reshuffle forced by the withdrawal of Conrad Smith did not weaken the team. Mils Muliana slotted into the troublesome outside-centre role, and Leon Macdonald came in at fullback. The world's finest front eight, with the sparkling combination of Richie McCaw and Dan Carter, saw New Zealand smash the Italians for both personal and media relief.
A 38-point blitz in the first 19 minutes answered all questions. At one point every 30 seconds, there was no talk of rust. The All Black play was reminiscent of their complete style displayed in 2005 and 2006. Italy were not insipid during the game. They were not out of place like Japan and Samoa eventually were. The Azzurri made line breaks and even competed with the vaunted All Black tight five.
But New Zealand looked unbeatable - the absolute perfect game by the planet's finest team to signal intent and purpose at the beginning of a tournament they look like winning easily. No team showed over the weekend - bar the old foes in the Tri Nations - anything that might trouble this impressive New Zealand outfit. Their defence was imposing, and their attack beautiful in its simplicity.
The All Blacks would not be too concerned about meeting France in a likely quarter-final. They scored at nearly a point a minute, and never looked like raising their real menace.
On this performance, this New Zealand team have indeed been tuned to perfection, and look as if they have in fact tapered for an all-conquering assault of the title that has eluded them for 20 years.
Italy were sent reeling, suffering their worst defeat in over three years. This is the most powerful team ever assembled by the All Blacks - and they will be hard to stop over the next seven weeks.
Is winning the Rugby World Cup going to be as easy for the All Blacks as James seems to think? Post your comments below.

i think they will choke again in the semis
by Dezza on September 11, 2007
They won convincingly and at times so very clinically despite there being room for improvement particularly on the set piece. I have a feeling we aint seen the best of the ABs yet.
by John Christie on September 11, 2007
Seeing the perfect handling and timing in the first 20 mins was amazing. Seeing the kick over the top and two AB chasers coming through was also amazing. Seeing the game from Ali WIlliams and the other forwards operating with awesome handling was also amazing. SA and Aust look good and competition is strong but this AB side still look better!
by Leslie Young on September 11, 2007
Yes - the ABs look really sharp when the they turned it on against Italy. It is debatable whether the ABs were that good and did not allow Italy to play or that Italy was that bad - considering they are ranked 9. It is so hard to tell at the moment - we just don't know if the ABs can play like this against a better defensive side. I still don't think ABs will have an easy run of it. However, things look positive. As for the comments on choking from Joe (i know he's just stirring) but if you going to stir - make it credible - this Henry managed AB can not actually choke again since they havent choked before. They did not play in 91,95,99, nor 2003. We just don't know how well this AB side will face up to the pressure - we can only go by their performance in the Tri-nations, Bledisloe, etc,...and its been pretty good.

Great comment Joe, very very intelligent, great content, great delivery. If you could work on captitals and fullstops you could be a journalist. Cheers

Yes after reading Joe's comment, I suspect he may have letters after his name. New Zealand are a very dangerous side, but like any other they are beatable. It happened in Melbourne this year and it's the team that beat them there that has me concerned. An in form Australian side are formidible especially without the ball and it's been proved that defence and goal kicking win world cups. Also NZ seem to bring out the best in the opposition. Having said that, whoever beats us will have earned the win.

As an American rugger I stand in awe of the All Blacks. They are the essence of complete rugby. And yet like the fabled Brooklyn Dodgers of Major League Baseball, they never seemed to be able to win the World Series. Although statistically superior to ever side they have faced in 20 years of World Cup tournaments, the All Blacks have not so much found a way to lose, but brought out the magnificence of their foes in do-or-die matches. I won't say they are snake bitten, but they are human. And isn't that what rugby is all about?
by Shane Robinson on September 11, 2007
Not sure what game you were watching last weekend, 'rarely was the collision area competitive'?? The Boks and Samoans hammered each other for the first half hour, with the Samoans throwing their weight around to great affect, sometimes illegally, especially Tuilagi, before the Boks wore them down. I see the Blacks choking yet again and the Boks halting their charge with their clever and adaptable rugby as they did in 1995.
by FRANO on September 11, 2007
Did joe choke on what he was saying. It's a long way to the final, they wont choke but they may be beaten - theyre only human.
by fishboy on September 11, 2007
Shane Robinson: the Boks play 'clever and adaptable rugby'? Which fantasy team are you talking about here? Not to disparage them too much but the fact is their rugby is renowned for being one-dimensional.
by Bosman Kruger on September 11, 2007
Not to disparage them too much but the fact is their rugby is renowned for being one-dimensional.
Yes, and that one dimension is normally pain. That Bok team is hard as nails and are going to dish out some serious defense. I stand in awe to the AB and believe that they have what it takes to win the world cup. But to many people put to many pressure on them and I think that has cost them the W/C previous years. There is two teams that can beat them. Aus and the Bokke. Aus with skill and the Bokke with brawn.
by fishboy on September 12, 2007
I think you're right Bosman Kruger - it's very early in the tournament but the SANZAR teams have already shown that they're head & shoulders above the rest. Of course the French are always an unknown quantity (as shown by their unexpected capitualtion to Los Pumas) and the Irish might rediscover some form but at this stage it looks almost certain to be NZ vs RSA in the final.

I agree with the comment that the opening game of the all blacks against Italy was a beautiful thing to watch, A finely tuned team with goal in mind, to convincingly beat every team that stands in their way of this years world cup. Now before everyone resigns themselves to the thought that the all blacks have already claimed the cup, remember that this has also been said of them in the past. They have unfortunately stumbled at the last hurdle on a couple of occassions. I for one hope that this time that they do not fall apart, as has happened in the past, and would like them to crush all team (esspecially England ) that come across there path. South Africa is the team for the All Blacks to be at peak perfection for, no one has to worry about the wallabies, they are falling apart without the help of playing any other teams.
by All Blacks World Champions on September 12, 2007
Choke. Happened before. Wait and see? Never have I witnessed such domination and complete rugby from a international union team. If this was any other code, everyone would be annointing the great team champions in waiting? Why the All Black doubters. If you support any other team you obviously lose alot of games. New Zealand doesn't lose to many teams very often. And with no comparison this is the best All Black team I have ever seen. Sorry world, but this is the beginning of a long run of NZ championship domination.
Yes, they're the best in the world at the moment but I don't know if this will translate into years of domination. The number of players that are leaving the side for more lucrative positions in the North means that next year's ABs will be a very different side. And, although I want the ABs to smash all & sundry before them, complete dominance by one team is not good for the sport as a whole.
